Y.j. pump
« on: September 22, 2008, 06:08:57 PM »
Is the energizer kit worth buying for the Y.J. pump? i read you can put diffrent impellers wedges, shoes and diverters after the kit is installed. Or is it better to just reglass the bottom for a berkly style pump?

I have thought about that a lot, and could never find an answer to that question  :-\ (I also have a boat with a YJ).  In my uneducated opinion , I think it would depend on how fast you want the boat to go.  If its a general use lake boat I think the Energizer kit will be fine, but if your trying to build a fast river racer type boat I think it would be better to change the whole thing.  In my opinion (and I may be wrong) the berk style intake and suction housing should do a better job of feeding the pump because it was designed to work with that style pump. Also the intake upgrade parts, loaders, shoe, rideplates, etc, are available everywhere for reasonable prices.

I don't think I've ever seen an Energized YJ with a shoe / rideplate.

Maybe Tom or Josh (JBP) can give some actual real world info on this .

Good info Jeff , For what its worth ... The Jacuzzi YJ is a good jet for what it was designed to do lift and move big heavy boats with small HP (remember the PT boat in Apocolypse Now 14YJ) .It moves huge volumes of water (doesn't create pressure) works fairly well in say a "humogous" day cruiser with 300 hp where the desire is 40 mph or so . The intake (which along with the suction is  reused in an Energizer) lends its self fairly well to performance when coupled with the "conversion kit" and thus the energizer conversion generally yields 10%+ (or better) efficiancy and Huge performance gains . It (the AT Energizer) also allows the addition of "trim" (Diverters) and all the other Berk/Dom/AT "bolt ons" (wedges ,droops, etc, etc) Probably one of the biggest bonus's it the fact that the replacement parts are inexpensive and choices (impellers) are huge . That said we do dozens a year and have enjoyed very good success with the product (in fact , we doing one Right Now !! ( see the HUGE boat resto in Socal projects) Tom

i have done the energizer kit in my old hawaiian, and i was pleased with the results. but wanted to go faster so i sold the boat and lost money :'( because in the end its still a jacuzzi. your going to dump 2k in the energizer and still only going to go so fast. you can get the berk intake done for 1k-1500 plus pump. like has been said before it all depends on where you want to end up. Jet boat performance can do either one ;) and great people too.
