If you have a long enough lighter there is no need to take off the intake grate. I did this in the parking lot at Katherine's landing

I had the same problem, only I was not Able to take off the intake grate due to lack of tools at the river. I cut out most of the rope with long knife and I used a long lighter to burn off the little pieces I could not cut off. It worked at the river 2 years ago.
