Jet Pumps / Hard to steer
« on: May 14, 2016, 12:28:41 PM »
I have a Advantage 20.5 closed bow, AT, with a ride plate and Turbine trim. The boat steers with zero effort at idle. Once any throttle is given to it becomes very hard (two hands and a ton of effort) to steer. I used to have a rudder and took it off and it didn't help.  I have changed steering and even replaced the trim with a new one and it has made zero difference. GS marine suggested that a Place Diverter may correct the problem because of the way the reverse is on the nozzle. On the American Turbine trim the reverse chute looks like a scoop into the oncoming water. Place Diverters have some aluminum cast onto the nozzle that allows a flat riding surface. Has anyone ran into this problem and does this sound like it can be a cure?

Jet Pumps / American Turbine Lost Wear Ring Isolator
« on: June 02, 2014, 08:54:15 AM »
While I was launching my boat 20.5 Advantage Classic closed deck AT-309 pump I fired it up as I was backing into the water I heard a large rattle and vibration from the jet. My son and I pulled it apart this weekend and found that the isolator rubber was missing and the wear ring was floating around. On the prior trip while I was greasing the pump I noticed my zerk for the bowl bushings was missing. I don't know how long it was missing. I replaced it and lubed the bushings. On inspection when I disassembled the pump the bowl bushings are also wasted and egged shaped. The end of the shaft is tore up. I already have the shaft repair kit on it so that should be a easy repair. The impellar is amazingly not in bad shape except were the area fits into the wear ring. How do I check the suction housing to be sure that the wear ring will still be centered? Or if it will even hold the wear ring snug enough? My bowls leading edges on the stator vanes are very worn and looks like I might need a bowl. Any advise will be greatly welcomed. I will try to post pictures tonight of the bowl and suction housing when I get home from work.

Jet Pumps / bowl interchange
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:21:47 AM »
Will a Berkley bowl interchange with an American Turbine AT-309 bowl. I t!oasted mine this weekend. Wear ring is loose with new insulator and the vanes are pretty jacked up. I dont have any picks. Want to find a resonable replacement to get back on the water.

Jet Pumps / Steering is hard with engine running
« on: June 05, 2013, 07:21:43 PM »
I have a 20.5 Advantage Classic closed bow with a AT-309 pump with hydraulic turbine trim. With the engine off the steering feels normal, but when the engine is running and in the water the steering gets very stiff. I have replaced the stock steering with a rotary unit and no change. I even replaced the entire steering and trim set up with a new unit, no change what so ever. I have routed the steering cable different ways with no change. With both of the steering systems with engine off it feels like every other jet that I have ever owned or driven, but put it in the water and fire it up it becomes a chore to steer. Any sugestions? It has been driving me crazy.

Thanks. :banghead:

Jet Pumps / Can you change hydraulic turbine trim to manual control
« on: May 31, 2013, 03:32:50 PM »
Has anyone ever converted hydraulic turbine trim to cable operated controls. Looks like you would need a different arm where the ram hooks up to install a cable operated system. Tired of the slow pump and the hassles of bleeding the system. Cable seems faster and less maintenance. Any and all opinons are welcomed.

Jet Pumps / First time American Turbine rebuild
« on: June 24, 2010, 05:02:28 PM »
So I disassembled my pump and noticed on the impeller side of the bowl the leading edges of the vanes are very rounded and worn. My question is , are they supposed to be sharp? And if so can I grind them with a die grinder to sharpen them and to smooth out the casting? Is it worth the time doing this or should I just leave it alone. The pump is an AT 309 in a 20.5 closed bow Advantage Classic, with a mild 454 BBC, 10-1 comp mild cam lighting headers. I lost the thrust bearing and ate up the impeller pretty badly, got lucky no other damage. Shaft is straight and there isn't any bluing, the suction housing doesn't have any wear. Which is surprising considering how bad the impeller is worn. I will try to post some pics. Any help will be appreciated, I am trying to get it back together for the fourth. If I don't get it back together I will be floating at the river regardless. I guess I can drink more beer then.

Thanks again,
Pat

Jet Pumps / So I Wasted My American Turbine This Weekend
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:11:53 PM »
Pump made some very bad noises and locked up. Took pump out off the boat this afternoon, front seal was wasted and ball bearings fell out. Tomorrow I hope to pull the impeller and inspect everything else out. What do I need to look for before rebuilding it? This will be my first pump rebuild, would like to try and get it done for the 4rth. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Pat

Jet Pumps / american turbine jet is growling?
« on: April 28, 2010, 08:22:35 PM »
I have an Advantage 20.5 classic with an ATJ-309.It is growling and when it is put into water it takes 30 seconds or so to start pumping. It has been four years since Tom Papp rebuilt it. Is it the bearing closest to the motor? Never messed with rebuilding a jet before and would like to do it myself. Any info is appreciated. Thanks Patch.
