Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Chevy350...what to do?
« on: June 25, 2015, 12:07:59 PM »
I have a 1976 Cobra Jet tri-hull with a chevy 350 and jacuzzi jet drive. The engine runs but not great, I believe it is the original. I put rebuilt heads, new lifters, pushrods in it. It has a knock from the bottom end. Kinda on a budget (I know, I shouldn't own a boat on a budget...) Now, should I rebuild the bottom end or look for a good used to swap with? But then again, you never know what you are getting, could be someone elses piece of junk otherwise they would be using it...right? I have rebuilt the boat from top to bottom (except for the engine), great shape except for the most important part.

Give me your thoughts if you would please...

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Chevy 350 parts swapping..
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:58:20 PM »
My engine is a 76' 350. I have another set of heads from a 350 (year unknown), and I was thinking about swapping the old crusty iron intake manifold with something newer and cleaner. Won't any Chevy head, intake manifold, etc. bolt on without any issues as long as they are for a 350? Or are there certain years that won't accept "newer" parts?

Thanks

Interior / Hard steering at speed
« on: November 19, 2013, 06:48:24 PM »
Over 30 mph, the steering is very hard, very easy at idle and slow speed. Steering cable and helm are brand new. (Jacuzzi jet) Any thoughts?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Chevy 350 flat at full throttle
« on: October 18, 2013, 04:42:05 PM »
Engine runs pretty good up to full throttle then flattens out, makes more noise, little louder, little rougher, but doesn't go any faster...? It is a 76 chevy 350, with several owners before me, I am not sure of its history (of course).

Also, it has oil leaking from the oil pressure connection. It has the copper tube, any ideas to seal it?

Thanks!

Trailers / Broken trailer hub
« on: September 24, 2013, 04:56:38 PM »
I broke a hub on my trailer and I need a new one. The hub doesn't have any numbers or stamps on it...Any good places in the Temecula/Elsinore area?  All I know about the hub is that it is a 5 x4.5, as far as the bearings...that's where I need the help.  I have been to Lake Elsinore Marine and Temecula RV, neither have what I need.

Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Quadrajet from a454 to a 350?
« on: July 06, 2013, 01:52:52 PM »
Will it work without any jetting or any other changes? It floods the engine very easy, won't do anything above a rough idle. I read about possibly stuck floats, now I have gas pumping out the vent tube after attempting to "unstick" the float with a straightened paper clip

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Another carb question..Quadrajet
« on: June 21, 2013, 05:33:19 PM »
I was using a car carb, finally got a marine version. Now, the old carb had a vacuum line attached coming from the distributor, the marine carb doesn't have the metal tube to attach the vacuum line to...Do I remove the (metal) tube from the old carb and install it on the "new" one? It is located less than an inch above the choke vacuum line..
The carb I have now is used, from a boat with twin 350's. My engine is an old (73) 350. Do I need that vacuum tube from the dist attached for timing purposes?
Also the old carb had a connection/tube on the lower front that had a hose that connected to the port side valve cover, new carb does not have such tube..

Thanks

Jet Pumps / Steering cable type?
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:49:54 PM »
I have a rotary type steering system and I need to replace the cable. Do the rotary types take the Safety-T quick cables? My cable has a "nub" ob the end of the helm side. I tried to post a pic, but couldn't...

Thanks

Interior / Floor suggestions needed
« on: December 14, 2012, 05:01:34 PM »
I replaced the entire floor, sealed it with resin. I used the one-part epoxy paint on top of that, but over 6 months, it has cracked all over the place. 2-6 inch cracks. I want to take all that paint off and redo it. Any other ideas...maybe the two-part (Rustoleum) epoxy paint?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Car version quradrajet

Is it "unwise" to run a car version of the quadrajet, or should I really get a marine version?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Cleaning a quadrajet?
« on: November 01, 2012, 02:32:05 PM »
Can I soak my entire carb in something to cleani it without ruining something else inside? Its a combination of lack of knowledge to dissassemble and perhaps laziness.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / I want to replace my quadrajet..
« on: October 11, 2012, 12:03:59 PM »
I have a chevy 350 with a jacuzzi jet pump. The carb came off a car (I am told) and I would like to replace it with something a little more user friendly since it doesnt have any manual adustments, just metering rods. If I go Holley, should I put a 650 ot 750 (spread bore)  or what else out there is user friendly?

Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Alternator wiring help please
« on: August 03, 2012, 05:53:15 PM »
Its been too long between my short/meltdown and repair. I need some help.  76 chevy 350 with a Delco-Remy alternator. The black two-wire clip/plug that goes into the alternator has two wires, I know one goes to to the battery, I don't know where there other one goes. Where the wire leaves the alternator the is a "2" on the casting of the alternator. It ran towards the transon to the distibution block. The it half a fuse holder that goes to the dist block...it may be the other half of the fuse holder/wire? (I have no idea the the wire and half holder went)

Thanks for any advice you may have.
I tried to post a pic but it was "too large."  if a p[ic is needed, I can take another and try it.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Can I turn my distributor?
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:47:06 PM »
76 chevy 350- due to the size of my air cleaner, I ran out of room to turn my distributor counter clockwise for timing adjustments. I cant afford a smaller filter, so here is the question. Can I lft the dist turn it clockwise and put it back in so I will have room to turn the dist? Do I mark the location pf the "rotor" prior tp lifting and make sure its in the same marked position when it is seated. Does that make sense?

Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Where do I start...ran like crap
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:37:30 AM »
1976 chevy 350. Jacuzzi jet.  A year and a half rebuilt of the boat (not the motor..$$) So I don't know how it ran before with last owner. Motor runs fine out of water of course. Took it to Elsinore today, wouldn't go fast enough to get on plane. At about 1/2 throttle it would start to bog, any more than that it would backfire then start to die but continued to run. ??

Can it it be a timing problem? Hopefully not a pump issue.

Thanks

Jet Pumps / Jacuzzi pump newbie questions
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:41:52 PM »
I have a 76 Cobra Jet trihull with a chevy 350. Now the pump, does it hold gear oil like a Berk? I don't see any fill plugs, just a zerk on one side where the shaft goes into the pump unit. And on the top of the unit, there is a round cover, 6" diameter (about) that is held on by two bolts, one on each side. After removing the two bolts, the cover does not want to come off easily, should it? Also, what is inside the cover?

Thanks.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Oil pressure lines
« on: March 09, 2012, 04:34:15 PM »
Hey guys,
I have a 76 chevy 350 / jet drive. Off the oil pressure guage is a small diameter plastic tube. Halfway back to the motor there is a connection where the hollow plastic tube connects to solid (copper?) wire. Is the normal? The solid wire is not connected to the sensor at this time......

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Chevy 350 block cooling plug?
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:11:31 AM »
Hey guys,
On my chvy 350 block located between the 6 and 8 cylinder, there is (was) a plug (bolt) I removed during my motor cleansing and areosol overhaul. I didn't put it back in and dont have it anymore. It screws into something already screwed into the block, it looks like a reducer. Anyone know what I am refering to. I need to know the size the bolt to go back in. I bought a 1/2", too small, 9/16"?

Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Chevy 350 backfire
« on: February 17, 2012, 03:42:31 PM »
After and aerosol overhaul, with the distributor removed and reinstalled close to where it was before (I didn't mark it). I get a nice little backfire and smoke ring out of the carb. Should I turn a hair clockwise or counter? Can I do damage to it?  Where do I start, no pun intended?

Thanks
