LMAO! Yeah I do!

The Mooneyham guy said "Yeah, you can do it, or we can do it, but the logo will be upside down and we'd rather get you a new front cover........"   :screwy:

Since you aren't 15 minutes away from Mooneyham like I am,, might make sense to give them a call and see what advice they can give you.  They have been pretty friendly with me for what little business I have taken to them.

No Answer, but I dropped them an e-mail.

Thanks Barry!

Thanks Mike! Since the changeup from an E-85 engine (The idea was scrapped when E-85 was pulled from all the local stations, albeit AFTER my shortblock was done and just waiting on the heads.... :banghead:  ), I need something that was gonna run cool enough, be underdriven, and on pump gas. I think if we stay with the same 514 format, changeup the pistons and/or go with shorter rods, we can hit 8.75:1 or so from the 10.5:1 we have it set up for now.

The shop is argueing they want me to go to 557 or something, and even lower compression and more boost since the 10-71 can easily do it. But it's not their money either,  >:D

THEN there's the MFI debacle. another matter entirely.  :banghead:

But it WILL WORK! Just killing me having this boat in my garage for a year unrunning..........

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Got wood? I DO!!!
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:09:05 PM »
So Harry hooked me up with this, and then brings it to me this morning (Thans bro!  ) Much better than the lil 6-71 I was gonna use, and much better condition than the 10-71 littlefield I have.

It's fresh from the Mooneyham shop, but I need to flip the bearing plates and gears front to rear (making the front plate upside down, obviously) to make this work as a rear driven deal.

Anyone have experience clearancing and timing a blower or do I just need to bite the bullet and have a pro do it?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. No to the factory bushings unless you call a holley kit factory.  O0I think I am going to just invest in a new base plate for it later. Just dont like the idea of running it with a little drip now and then. :o As for the oring deal also.....no way to mill the shafts.... Thanks for the ideas though....

That drip is exactly what your marine carb is designed NOT to do. Sounds like the baseplate may have been replaced with a non marine version at one time maybe?   :screwy:

I know how i do it is put the lightest spring that works without bogging and dont worry about what rpm they kick in.
Just my .02 Tom

Pretty much it. Start light and work up 'til it doesn't bog when you flatfoot it is how I do it.

Don't forget to read your plugs as you're going along though. Could be chasing your tail if jetting, etc is way off.  ;)

I'm in the aviation business so that's no biggie. Always willing to help out a fellow boater. Noting weird or illegal here lol

LOL! And it's greatly appreciated!

It just kinda reminded me of a story years ago, maybe, 96 or 97? Anyway, I was a DSM for Radio Shack in Youngstown, Ohio, and a friend, former manager of mine who was now a DSM in Cleveland called me on a Wednesday morning absolutely frantic asking me how many store manager trainees I had ready to go.

Apparently, and some may remember the news headlines about this, several RS stores and employees were involved in a cocaine smuggling ring using Fedex and the Tandy Corp corporate account to do it. Anyway, he got a call from the DEA that a sting operation had resulted in the arrest of some 17 people, all RS employees and managers, and they needed him to come lock the doors on 3 of his stores...........hence the duress phone call.......was an exciting 3 or 4 weeks without going into all the details, LMAO!

Ray

As a side note, me being me, when said DSM, several months later, had to get on stage to give a Human Resources presentation to some 1200 Store managers at an annual meeting, the RSM and I arranged to have a Fedex guy deliver him a package on stage.......... >:D

Kinda hard to tell if the u-joints are going bad in the boat unless they're REALLY shot.........Just an idea here that might help.

When I pulled Moo's engine, in playing around with the driveline on a surface plate for other reasons dealing with the new MoMo, I noticed it felt like flat spots on the needle bearings????

Haven't pulled it apart, since it's going to a new 1350 driveline anyway, but I expect that's exactly what I'll find in it when/if I pull it apart. Probably not enough deflection in the crankshaft/pump shaft drive angles caused it since it was all new 2 years ago, but I can easily see where these joints could cause a "growl" well before they are completely shot.  Probably growl the whole time, just can only hear it at low RPM.  I could never hear ANYTHING on Moo, with the open headers, solid cam, roller rockers, etc, the thing buzzed and growled anyway....... ;)

If it's sat 4 years, did you drain the tanks, new gas? Dirt clogging the pickup tubes or hoses?

Other than that, I had a kinda similar problem with my BBC in Pickle. It had sat a couple years also. Was a combination of bad vacuum leaks, and dizzy issues. Rebuilt another carb for it, all new intake gaskets, the HEI dizzy drove me nuts (replaced everything in it, still no good) so I replaced it with a Unlilite. Runs out just fine now! :)
