 Good deal though !!

Ray,  didnt you have an issue with a Golden Eagle in one of your boats ??

Topock / Laughlin / Re: Edelbrooke carb
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:53:02 AM »
Thanks guys...the carb is 250$....but I was planning on next season getting another 600 and running  a tunnel ram O0 and the carb that is on it is a rochester quadro.jet...it is trashed bad!! Do u think go for it for the season?

Q-Jet is a good carb, really, don't think you're gonna improve anything with the Edelbrock. But what comes to top of mind is your intake manifold........is it set up for a square bore carb or spread bore?  ::)  THAT could be another expense........forget adaptors, don't work well......

Well I looked up on the internet and a stock 455olds which is what mine is requires a 500cfm to a 650cfm so I thought it would be ok, ....but is there any problom with useing a edelbroke carb?? O0
Not really, but where's the other one?  :screwy:

Edelbrocks are, for lack of a better description, old Carter AFB and AFS designs. VERY different than the Holley in how it's tuned and worked with. Used to prefer them over the Holleys on street cars back in the day, because they can be tuned quite handily and even in a parking space at a "street meet".........They came quite often stock on dual quad offerings from GM, Ford and Chrysler back in the 60's.

You're problem is you're internet "requirement" is probably assuming daily street use from idle, many partial throttle situations and very RARE full throttle use. On a jet boat, complete opposite. You're going to be running the boat, idling out of the NWZ, cruising, at 3000-3500 rpm, and (hopefully) 5000 rpm at WOT far more often. There really only needs to be four throttle positions, idle, 1/2, 3/4 and WOT on these things........ :sly:.........but seen them work very well on jet boats!

The carb brand isn't the issue, it's the CFM. At 600, unless theres a second one on a dual quad or tunnel ram, blower, etc, you're leaving a LOT on the table at WOT, IMHO.

Then again, as BP said, "If it's free I'd run it!". At least for now and look for something a lot bigger, like an 800, 850 or a second 600 and dual quad intake....

Obviously, the masses are gonna tell ya to dump the Olds and go with a Chebbie or a Ferd. I have all three. To be honest, no real difference in "marine" form. Real difference is in "Hot-Rodding" them where the others lend themselves to more handily.

As far as converting from one to another? If you love the hull, or it's worth it, then yeah. But it ain't cheap and ain't easy. Nordie did it to change from a Ferd to a Chebbie..........I think he'd sooner stick his junk in a beehive than do THAT again..........

Pull the momo, pull it apart and see what you smoked. Probably  a rod bearing or two, the white smoke, to me, would indicate valve issues or maybe you stuck a piston. Block full of sand, who knows until you get it apart........ ;)........I'm a firm beleiver in not doing anything to fix nothing unless you know WHY it failed to begin with.

The No Wake Zone / Re: loss of power
« on: May 15, 2011, 09:25:40 PM »
Had it happen a few times on my floats. Usually a rock stuck in the impeller from too much lead foot in too shallow of water. Or reversing off a beach instead of pushing off........... Happened many times....you'd think I'd learn....... :banghead:

Once was a T-Shirt, and another was a stick sucked up in an unusually long NWZ........

Point being crawl UNDER the boat first, look in the hand hole carefully. I think you'll find your problem........

Audio / Re: Ported or sealed sub box?
« on: May 15, 2011, 05:42:27 PM »
Somewhere in my stash I had a book from many years ago when I worked at Radio Shack (When it WAS a cool place to shop).....Anyway, there are many mathematical equations based on technical info from your woofer or subwoofer manufacturer dictating exact optimum cabinet volume for any given speaker. They were usually VERY large numbers, so you could also equate smaller cabinet volumes and filter in port diameters and lengths to compensate for the smaller volumes. (Back then, most quality speaker crossover networks used light bulbs disguised as fuses as protection, beleive it or not. Light bulb filaments would not affect dynamic range where a fuse tended to muddy the mids/highs, and when replaced with fuses, an easy assumption, sound quality went to crap)

But enough telling how old I am.................. :sly:

If I remember right, the important numbers were Resonate frequency the the Qe number.......been years guys.  :banghead:

Today, music is very different, and all people want is "do it bump?", not audial intregrity, So probably not important as it was in those days.

As it is, I agree, a sealed box "hits" harder, but takes a ton of power to do it, where a ported box is far more efficient at the same SPL. The quality of the bass coming out? Well, depends on what you listen to I guess.

The No Wake Zone / Re: 98 Chevy Truck Rear Brake problem
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:46:06 AM »

I'd flush the brakes completely, first (Pressure ball is the best way, but can be done with the old 2 person "pump the pedal" method, just takes awhile). Double check that your front calipers and hoses are in good working order, seen sticky front calipers and soft hoses cause it before on UHaul trucks about the same year.

Other than that, he's right, can only be the master cylinder or possibly just the check valve or worst case, the vacuum booster itself  :banghead:

After seeing the same pics of Dozzr's bowl, I think I'd opt for Duane's brace/mount that Skip posted before I'd even tig on the thing.......... :sly:

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: FORD 390
« on: May 12, 2011, 10:15:04 AM »
Good motor! I would consider it a Big Block, same as a 396 Chebbie.

2 experiences I have with the 390 were both "police interceptor" versions.  1 was in a '66 Fairlane a bud had when I was in HS. VERY strong 14 second car, and a ton of fun. The other, about the same time frame, we put in my pops old '75 1 ton dump truck.....got the motor cheap, he needed it, why not?  :screwy:

Truck would pull anything, and haul over 2 tons without a hiccup while towing the little backhoe he had at the time.

Didn't know anything about ferds back then. Still don't, really, save the 460, but nearly 30 years later that engine still impresses me.

I gave a set of those away for the snails.........don't see the logic, though they are cool looking.  ;)

But why mess with them when center risers are far better, like ka0tyk is running if logs are required????

Two sets of 'em for the 460 going on my twin jet...........

Oh I'm with ya on that Paul!  I'm all for custom and ingenuity........

The thing thats hard to see in the pics is that the original piece of pickup tube that goes into the pump is apparently just hammered into the Dooley tube. There is evidence of attempts at brazing it, but simply "pressed" in there.

I get some extra time I'll pull the pickup from the pump, but while it obviously worked......bearings all look like new......I can't help but fear cavitation or breakage issues if I reuse it. Particularly when the correct parts are readily available.  ;)

Ray

1124
now thats not something you see everyday...definately different

I'll say! I kinda like it! Almost Sidewinder-ish, and Sleek-ish at the same time.......good score!

Heavy or not, would be a VERY cool float!

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / Re: Multiple problems!!
« on: May 11, 2011, 08:02:28 PM »
I would agree, but looking VERY closely at the pic, it would seem someone simply screwed an eye bolt into a, what, maybe modified 2x4 as a backing plate?

Whichever, a LOT of work ahead of ya fixing that! I'd start grinding on the INSIDE to see if a wood backer was factory or not, but either way, gonna end up with a 6x6 hole probably and a lot of fiberglass work ahead of ya!  ;)

Ray

Just my .02, IF it had wood in there to begin with, I'd eliminate that and lay it up a few layers heavier with a 4x4 or so SS plate as backup.....
