Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / 76 Rogers Super Cyclone Gel
« on: April 08, 2018, 08:09:32 PM »
I've got a 76 Rogers that the P.O. painted over the deck with something.  I'm in the process of stripping that.

My question is... The boat is white/ blue.  Could/would Rogers have put a white gel coat down, then put the blue behind it and then laid the glass?

The reason I ask is because it looks like there is a layer of white on top of the blue around the interior.

You can see in the pics it looks like there is paint, then primer, then white gel, then blue gel.

I'd love to get to the blue, but I think it might be buried in white gel.

I bet I could mount up a V roller in front of the float bar mount that way the boat would ride up and over the mount instead of on it, then it wouldn't be needed once pulled out of the ramp.

Might look into a block or roller for sure.  Thanks.

Last weekend at the local ramp the bar was loose resting on the trailer and I had to lift up on the bow to get it high enough to get the eye pinned.  That's how steep it was.  The main issue for me isn't getting the eye lined up, it's the lower bar mount on the trailer contacts the hull.  I'm thinking if I can move it forward a foot or so and shorten the bar, that it'll keep the bar from hitting the hull.

I'm also going to put a chain on the bar so that it can't flip over backwards.  I think I've read about your bow eye escapades in another thread GT.

Is there any rhyme or reason the length of a float bar?    I bought a Rogers Super Cyclone from the bay area last year and brought it to Texas.  Our ramps appear to be a little steeper out here and I'm having trouble running the hull into the float bar mount.  I'm thinking if I shorten it up by about half it'll work out a lot better at the ramp, but I"m wondering how short is too short.

Bump.

On the pistons, I'm leaning more towards them being .030 over.   I measured them with a set of calipers the other day and got 4.268 at the top and 4.300 at the bottom of the skirt.

.067 (1/16th ?) for both comp rings and .193 (3/16ths ?) for the oil ring.

Whoever machined/sold these slugs didn't put a single damned number on them other than the original forging number on the inside.

I'd buy them, but I'm looking for a set of 5 hole slots for my rig.

Are the pistons forged ?

Sent from my iPhone using SoCal Jet Boats

I don't know.    They have 252-97 stamped on the inside of the piston, which I think equates to a TRW piston, but I'm not sure who finished/sold them.   I can mic them and find the exact bore size tonight.

^^^Some of the info I've found on them.

Edit:  Looks like they are a TRW forging that Speed Pro or Sealed Power finished/sold.  Should be around 12.5:1 comp depending on heads/deck height.

Got a couple of extra parts in a deal for a short block that I don't need.  A cam with low hours that is too big for me and a set of valve covers that I don't want.

Keep in mind these are in DFW, so they'll have to ship.  I have a buddy in Palmdale, so I might could send them out with his Vette on the truck in a week or so.

Comp 11-220-4 Solid lifter with lifters and springs.  $250 o.b.o.  Appears to be low hours, I'd run it, but it's too big for my motor.

Comp Composite valve covers.  Looks like the P.O. dropped one on a corner.  A little epoxy and it should be good as new.

$80 o.b.o.

I've got a set of pistons that are claimed to be Speed Pro .060 over pop ups.  They appear to have a 50cc dome from what I can find online.  They have 292-97 embossed on the bottom of the slug.  I'm still cleaning these and trying to find a P/N for them, I'll post more when they're ready to go.

These are still listed on CL.  Maybe you guys work out a deal on splitting the cost and I'll ship the VC to CA and the headers to ID.

Bump the compression to 10:1 and you might be OK, unless you are going be running over 5,500 RM, stay hydraulic roller..

JMHO

George at Clay Smith Cams is the jet boat guru.
That's sound advice.

GT

Roller is out of the budget for now, as is a CR bump.  I'll go back through the bottom end at a later date. It's a stock Berk with an A cut, it'll never see over 5k.

Both of those cams are way too big for what you are looking to do.

I would recommend the Schneider Racing JB-3H . They are out of san diego and have been making cams since the 70s or 80s cant remember right now.

224* / 230* .540"/ .540" on 112.  Just put this in a 468 BBC and pulled 500 HP at 5500 with headers.   The cams you listed will peak power too high for what you need in a jet boat.

Just my $0.02

I figured they were a little big, but hell, you gotta start somewhere.

You need to get in touch with, George Striegel of Clay Smith Cam. His shop is in Buena Park. 714-523-0530.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.

Nothing I've found in a catalog seems to hit the sweet spot, they're either tiny, or they rev too high.

So I'm looking at cams for my new engine.

It'll be mild for now so I can get it in the water cheap and fast.

8.5 - 9:1 BBC
Edelbrock Performer 2.0
Edelbrock 750 (1407)
781 heads mild MILD port work(mainly gasket matching and a little bit of unshrouding)
Bassett OT headers

Looking at Comp Cams, but open to whoever as long as it's a quality cam.

This one might be a little big for now: (solid)
