Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: i want to be blown
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:06:45 PM »
I'm with Proppy on this, but will elaborate. Built a weird blower motor myself, and gotta tell you this , theres a LOT more to it than just the blower itself. Take the sublime warning in Enginedoctors "moron" post. It isn't cheap to do this even HALFWAY right.

Most times we here tend to tell everyone what WE would build or WISH we could build, but in this case theres not a lot of wiggle room. Not only does the bottom end need to be as bullet-proof as possible, head flow, gaskets, o-ringing.......all come into play, then you have the ignition issues, particularly if you're going to run pump gas. Many I know are running severely retarded ignition timing to avoid detonation at everyday use speeds, and CAN crank that up when at...say....the Tom Papp memorial or the Yuma power tour or something speshul running race gas or avgas. Counter productive to my thinking.

Just an FYI, was poking around Mallory's website the other day and never knew this. Their HyFire 6, not the 6A or 6AL, has the capability and special harness available to advance/retard ignition timing based on rpm and boost levels for blown and turbo engines. Can be user  customized as well, without some box the size of an 8x8x16 concrete block or require a laptop to program the silly thing.

All that being said, now understand this. PSI of boost is really back pressure measured at the intake manifold. Normal atmospheric pressure is, as I remember it, is around 7 PSI, which would be zero on any boost gauge. So ANY pressure registering on a boost gauge is ABOVE that number, whatever it is. Boost will increase with RPM, basics yes, but when boost numbers get into the rediculous digits, its really showing inefficiency in the system. Now, top fuel cars, drag boats, many more, get into or close to triple digits, but their entire gig is 1000 feet at a time no matter what the cost, with millions of dollars on the line. They also rebuild the motors every run and can afford to destroy a $200+k engine or two. Volumetric efficiency, durability, and low maintenance go completely out the window in applications like that.

I think I had some guy try and challenge me here very recently on this information, and I ignored it, but Proppy and I did a LOT of research on building blown E-85 engines which is what I ultimately went and did. All the physics remain the same, whether on pump gas, E-85, Alcohol, Nitro-Methane, whatever. You will be battling detonation when you are at the edge of your chosen platform. With E-85, Alcohol, or Nitro, you can get away with a LOT more compression and overdrive rates. No matter what fuel platform you build the engine for, if you want to be at the ever loving ragged edge, be my guest, crank the PSI up and replace/rebuild as often as necessary.  I think that guy was talking in the 20 PSI range which is CRAZY to me in a pleasure boat, or car for that matter and was asking about using block fill.  :screwy:

I beleive, with a solid engine for the given fuel and platform, at the top of the RPM range, you should be looking at 10-15 PSI on the gauge if you're into performance and rebuilding somewhat often. On a boat, that would be every year unless something stupid happens. For longevity, keep it at 5-10PSI. The HP difference between the two is negligeable IMHO. Still a LOT of planning, building and hardware involved in building a reliable and daily usable blown engine in that category.

We see alot of motors around here. The one I DO remember was Jay's cam 45* out and running

LMAO! That one was the best! Had us all scratching our heads. Miracle all that was screwed up was the pushrods...... :screwy:

well extended crank time to start low fuel pressure maybe weak injectors or maybe and most likely glowplug loom or relay theres my two cents

Exactly where my heads at with it. Did take a long crank to get it going last week or so.  Why I suspect the pump. been reading horror stories on these 6.0's when things go wrong though  ;)

On the flip side of this thread, I got a cool pic on my phone I'll hafta D/L of my G/F's frozen water fountain this morning, lol.

Ick!

Filters were done about 6 months ago, my suspicions lie in the water separator or the injection pump. Had the dealer tow it in today so we'll see what they can find. Been doing situps so i'm in shape when I get bent over,  :banghead:

Why in the F**K would you remove the block heater?

LOL That isn't the problem. Fuel issue. I'm guessing gelled in the water separator. Set Veggie oil outside in 20-30 degree weather and see what happens. Now picture a short blonde trashy looking thing who has slept her way to the Governors office in Phoenix and allowed the fuel companies to mix that shit as high as 20% in every gallon of diesel fuel.................... :screwy:

I are a retard as well,  >:D  and was thinking the same thing, Ralph. Your factory block should be plenty strong enough to take those numbers with no problem. Point of fact, friend of mine here locally is running a .060 over stroked BBC on E-85 at close to 40 PSI (twin turbo), 12:1 compression and runs it like we all run our pleasure boats. Been running for 2 years this way.

Strengthening a block by backfilling it is only something I've ever seen on top fuel cars/boats that are rebuilt after every 1/4 mile run/pass. Those guys are ALSO running well over 100 PSI of boost from 14-71 and bigger blowers at around 20:1 compression on Nitro-Methane on well engineered aftermarket blocks, twin magnetos and 2 plugs per cylinder because the first set burns off during the burnout process. These cars become, in effect, diesels after the launch, in reality. And the engine blocks are a structural part ofthe chassis.

In regard to the lower cylinders not doing much for cooling, my retarded ass begs to differ. The BULK of the heat comes from the lower part of the cylinders where the fire and force is at BDC, to be sure, but there is also this thing called heat transfer and expansion, and the fact a good portion of the heat in an engine actually comes from violent reaction of friction, not so much from the explosion and flame portion of the process.  The very process that makes liquid cooling even work in the first place. If one part of a cylinder expands at a certain rate, and he lower portion does not, you have another major issue, to my thinking.

Heard the freeze warnings, drained boat blocks, but REALLY? Diesel truck will NOT start (Special thanks to Arizona Governor Skank/Bitch for the Bio-Diesel!!!), need to go help G/F move and even too cold for the battery charger to work on the batteries! My thermometer says 42, called my bud at the airport here a few minutes ago who said, "Dude, it's 36"

REALLY!?!? at noon in Casa Grande, Arizona? Why oh WHY did I remove that block heater from this thing?

Kindof what I was thinking! Picked this up of E-Prey last week on the cheap and was considering using it my Pickle boat to do the same thing just a little bit differently and cleanly.  ;)

Which one?  ::)

Pickle- Drop in the new Dizzy and OT pipes, put on the fresh 850. Probably get the new carpet in it finally, finish wet sanding. Ready to run as it is really though.   Love the boat, but its gotta go for sale.

Moo- Need to get it out of the garage and the jet torn down for its makeover. Still missing a couple hard to find key parts before assembling this thing

Yellow Sub- everythings here to do it, just need the time and space to do so, and have the tandem trailer fit to it.

Shrimpin' Boat- Floors in, transoms done, replacing wood in dash, skylights and gunnel supports, reglassing open bow wood, then it's trailer needs redone, interior built and upholstered, fix some cracking where it was capped which means paint work as well now. The assembly of this ones gonna be fun!   :banghead:    Its gotta go to my brothers machine shop to use the overhead crane.  :sly:

Charger- Dunno where we are really with that one. New intake and carb on it, now a nasty vibration from the jet and the guys don't know why. I'll get a look at it next week sometime. I'm still saying a rock in the impy that they are missing.  ;)  Should be able to nurse that one along all season and re do it next winter.

Brad's Fugly Hallet- well, what more is there to say? Its gonna sit another year at least while parts show up as my cheap ass finds 'em!  Probably still just sand it minimally and clear coat it as it is........... :o

Solid basic setup!

Personally, I've had problems with the std spring loaded T valves, hence the driver mounted micro valve for the headers. Never a problem with the other boat with std logs, OT pipes and no OB dumps, though.

I've been toying with the idea of tapping exit water from the rear of an engine for awhile now, but one thought has stopped me from trying to destroy thousands of dollars worth of engine. Trapping the (well, lets face it, not pre-heated on a header equipped engine) water and forcing it to stay in the engine a bit longer would tend to increase operating temp. A good thing, since these boats end to run from 100 to 160 degrees depending on the boat and who you talk to. 180 or a tad higher would be great if we could acheive it, but only running a thermostat would that be possible I think. Then the pressure valve would come into play. Or pressure regulator, to be exact.

I've been giving more and more thought to a few boats on here that are running water pumps. GT I think put it best that it's pretty common to do so in the PAC NW on River boats where the water is much cooler, and honestly, the water pump would likely act as it's own pressure regulator. Coupled with a normal thermostat, makes almost complete sense to have an open cooling system that held a pretty consistent water temp with that hardware. Unfortunately, my crap is all so weird that theres just not an easy way to test this theory on the local Socal or AZ lakes or the lower River.

WTB / Re: Looking for a hand gun for the wife.
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:45:00 PM »
Gotta second the Kel-Tec Recommendation.  Bought Cin one in .32 that she carried. Very reliable and unintimidating weapon when loaded with Winchester Silvertips.  Gave it away to a dear friend after she died.

Personally, I like the 9mm, but for a defense weapon, anything that can be had in 9mm can also be had in .40 S&W. I'm a big .45 fan, but an even bigger 10mm fan. The .40 is the pretty little sister to the 10mm. No doubt close to on par with the .45 in stopping power, but no more recoil and manageability than a 9mm.

To each his own, but if the wifey wants to experience  some real recoil, She can shoot my 10mm's, or my .357 Maximums, or (Gawd love her if she agrees), my Ruger SRM customized to a 5 shot .500 Linebaugh Long.............. :screwy:

I've shot that gun I think a total of 25 or so times. Hurts every friggin time! Still not sure what I was thinking having that thing made, since elephants and rhinos are not indigenous to Arizona.......... :sly:
