Nice looking Hallett. It's good to see a few more boats from central Cal--looks like we're probably neighbors. We spend most of our time at Shaver, but also hit Pine Flat several times a year--mostly in the spring when there is more water and before it gets too hot. I also like to travel a bit--San Antonio and Elsinore with these scjb crazies, and Shasta, the delta, Berryessa, New Hogan with some of the Norcal boaters.

The chevelle belongs to Andrew (#2 son). He found it (and I paid for it) 7-8 years ago--literally out behind the barn in a rural area near Visalia. He still has dreams of restoring it some day. His first "car" was a 1965 el camino that he ran around in during high school--it was really ugly, but got it running pretty good. He sold it when he left home for school knowing that the chevelle was still here waiting. We have the "to sell or not to sell" conversation a couple of times a year, but as of right now, I think he's keeping it (in my side yard).

I've got an old Sanger just like this one--next year's project. Don't have one good pic, but these will give you a peek.

I'm looking for a cheap, oval port BBC, single carb, aluminum intake manifold. I have a 1966 396 sitting in pieces in my garage that I have unsuccessfully tried to sell. I figured that if I put all those parts together it would probably be easier to sell. However, I only have a rectangle port intake manifold--a GM dual plane aluminum (painted black)--that I could trade away. Don't mind dirty, don't really care about brand/model, primarily interested in price--cheap.

On the other hand, if you want to buy all my parts for your intake manifold, I'll sell them to you for $1500.

Saw your boat in a previous thread--looks good. You mentioned there that you took the boat to Perris. How did it run there? Similar rpms? Did it seem alot faster?

We ran one on a jet boat for several years, and I liked it--seemed to make sense to have it located up out of the bilge. However, the starters themselves are pretty expensive--I'm thinking around $300--and they turn backwards because of the reverse (top) mounting.

You weren't kidding--great deal. That is the same hull I have and I think you'll love the ride. Typical Hondo forward/reverse installation on the stringer in front of the driver's seat. See Boost, that's what I was telling you about. Anyway congratulations on your new boat.

Welcome to jet boating. I bought my first jet boat in 1975--an 18' Omega (Tahiti) with a 455 Olds. I ran the heck out of it (5000+ rpms, jumping wakes, racing, etc) because I didn't know any better, and it never let me down in the 5 years I had it. It would run in the low 60s--because we didn't have GPS, we had to run it over a measured mile at the lake. These full speed runs for just under 60 seconds should have exploded the motor according to internet conventional wisdom, butthey didn't. In the 1990s I had a 21' Fresno cruiser with a 455/berkley. When I bought it, it had 17 seasons on it and would run in the low 50s at 4800 rpms. Over the next 8 years, we ran it probably 1000 hours, did nothing to it except oil changes and tune ups, and it lost about 75 rpms each year, until we finally just wore it out.

I would guess that you should be able to hit 55-60 MPH, depending on your motor and the condition of your pump. It'd be a good idea to get a working tach so you can see what the motor is doing. I noticed in your pic that the carb looks pretty small, which could restrict full throttle rpms. I ran a Holley 3310. Then if your rpms go too high compared to the speed (i.e. 48 MPH at 5000rpms) then your pump needs attention.

The most important thing though is to go to the lake and have fun. I know that many of my 4 kids (they're all in there 20s and out on their own) best memories are of the times we spent at the lake playing together.

Wow, Boost is sure fast on the keyboard. As you may have guessed, he was the previous owner and I'm sure knows more about the boat than I do. Back seat leg room is not bad, and front seat is pretty good--I'm 6' tall and it was very comfortable for me. Although the boat is new to me, I actually have spent a significant amout of time in a Hondo hull with a BBC/Jacuzzi WJ just like this one--a good friend bought a new one from Hondo in the early 70s. You're right, the hulls have some real classic lines, but also the bottoms seem to allow the boats to run on top of the water, rather that "in" the water like most of the 70's "production" boats. It would make you a fine "summer toy". Give me a call, and we can figure out how get it from my place to your's.
