The No Wake Zone / Re: Black jet boat
« on: January 07, 2014, 03:04:26 PM »

couple of questions,

1. Can i spray gel over poly primer?
2. did you use a gravity feed or suction gun?
3. Ive read about having to add some sort of wax or something for the gelcoat to dry? Or is this literally ready to spray?
4. Lastly, what kind of prep work goes down first? and will it cover without being primered?

thanks!
Steve
it will be fine with Polly primer. I always primer, makes covering much more easy. You can use any gun. I prefer gravity feed gun. If you use a half clear half gel it will air cure. If it's straight gel it will need wax in the gel or to be covered with PVA to cure. I alway prep the surface with 80 grit. It's much different than paint. It really needs a good bite to stay on there...... Ask me how I know.
For the 21 I would go with go with 3 if it's just one color.

whats the process for that vs paint? Im familiar with paint, not gel

It is sprayed with a 2.0 tip or larger. Gel comes out of the gun super orange peeled but, If you spray with half gel half clear coat it keeps the orange peel down. If you know your way around a gun, the half clear and half gel is almost a walk way finish.  Its just a bit more work sanding the gel flat. Also color sand all the way to 2000 before buffing the gel out.

All the gray was gel coat/clear and clear over walk a way finish.

Hey. I'm throwing around ideas for paint on my rogers. Orange is my favorite color. And black goes great with it. Since hugger orange is 367/gallon I'm considering painting the boat jet black and accenting it with orange.

Ever seen a black jet boat any pics?

Thanks
Steve

Sorry for all the questions. But if I do that. There won't be any glass between the intake and where the transom is. Is that a problem? Structurally?

Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using SoCalJetBoats mobile app
No really. The best think to do is add one or two pump braces too keep the intake from moving. Especially when ya got a lot of HP!

OK. And how far should I set it back 2" 3" etc?

Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using SoCalJetBoats mobile app
If it were me I would set it back to where the hand hole of the jet is just outside of the transom. Can't really give ya an exact number but somewhere in between 2 and 3 inches.

Could you come up with some info on setting it back? I've never done it and I think I would have to cut a big chunk out. But I'm game

Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using SoCalJetBoats mobile app
well, pull the intake. Get that done up with a shoe and ride plate. I would clean up the intake area and cut out how ever much you need to. glass back in the front part. I always put a bit more glass back than I should so I can grind make the intake go back in perfect.

I dont have a pump yet to bolt up to it, but it looks like it might be "set back" already, what do you think?

No, looks to be in the stock location. I would set it back to at least half of the hand hole sticking out. I've seen a lot of them with full set backs and the run super hard.

Want a Hondo/cole t deck for the leg room so I can run a second pedal to control the fwd/rev. Just don't know what my 76' stwd18 is worth.

I would wait and go with a 19 tunnel or gulwing tad. It will be worth it in the long run! ^-^

I'm thinking I want to swap over to a T-Deck next winter any suggestions on what one I should start looking for. The main reason is leg room being 6'3 and 260 might be more comfortable than my stwd 18.

Go to some fiberglass buckets in the 18 and ditch the back seats.

Do you think you might move location around in the future?

I don't see it moving far if it does. The idea was to keep the location in between the CP regatta and the Yuma power tour. What did you have in mind?

Personally, no Parker unless it's a weekday or early or late in the season. I hate it in my 18. In your boat you'll be just fine bro.
