Everyone that had interest in trading had an outstanding loan on their ride.  Also the boat was supposed to be in the Hotboat bikini issue last month, we towed to Havasu as asked, showed up where and when asked, washed and positioned where asked, about 15 pics were shot with some very nice local talent. I was told that they may do a feature on it and were saving the pics.  TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Broke My Starter Bolt
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:48:57 PM »
Don't forget to install a front starter strut, they come on all of the older motors, but nobody reinstalls them. You have to over tighten the starter bolts to try and keep it aligned, and then you break the bolt, or use the strut. Thats what it was designed for.  TIMINATOR

Use at least a 383 stroker, RPM airgap intake, good heads (180/195 cc runners), cam 230 at .050 with a quick ramp rate, Basset or lightning exhaust, 9.5to 10.0 comp, tight quench area, FORGED pistons, and you probably won't even have to cut the impeller unless its a AA unit. Don't skimp on the quality of machinework, and you will piss off a lot of people!  Try and half-ass it and YOU will be pissed off.  TIMINATOR  623-877-8553

Chevy starters are supposed to have an L shaped bracket from the stud on the front of the starter to the block above the pan rail. If not installed, the starter will move away from the flywheel/flexplate after a few starts. Most parts guys have trouble finding the part#, the wrecking yard is a good place to score one. Also, the bigblock and smallblock ones are different.   TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Blowing oil (olds455)
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:25:25 PM »
You are probably FILLING the rockers with oil due to inadequate drain back. Easy test: get the motor and oil hot, shut off the motor for about 2 minutes, that will allow any oil in the rockers to drain into the pan, restart it, blast it wide open throttle. If it spits oil immediatly, either the rockers aren't baffled enough, or there is excessive blowby. If it takes about a minute to spray oil, then its probably inadequate oil drain back. External drainback lines plumbed correctly to the pan, and restricted pushrods will help and maybe cure the problem. Read the Practical Olds article in last years HotBoat magazine.   TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Ignition Coils
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:15:33 PM »
Don't get hung up on advertised secondary voltage, the spark plugs will draw only enough voltage to fire them, based on load. The MSD Blaster is fine for all but the top 1% of jet boat motors. Hi boost/blown, and nitroused above 250HP plate might need more. My 14-71 blown/intercooled, rollered,Dart headed 565 works fine with a MSD 6M box, and Blaster II coil at 11 lbs.boost. Anybodies electronic ignition(even stock) has more voltage output than the old mags that were used in the 60s on Top Fuel motors!   TIMINATOR

See Hotboat magazine: "The practical Olds Motor", from about a year or so ago. Everything you need to know. Read it, memorize it,believe it. No, really, it explains a LOT. The main problem is finding a shop that will do things someone elses way.  Its a pride thing.   TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: The Big Debate - Ford Vs. Chevy
« on: August 17, 2007, 09:05:54 AM »
Back with more facts: 454 rod ratio=1.534  460=1.716, Ford can allways have a longer rod due to the taller deck, Ford taller deck gives wider intake manafold with longer runners = more torque/midrange, but can be compensated for with larger runners for more top end, also has lesser runner angle. Chevy bore size = 4.250, Ford bore size = 4.360, that extra .110 gives less valve shrouding for better air flow, also the combustion chamber on the Chevy is about .600 WIDER than the bore! That causes major shrouding and less airflow/horsepower. There are ways around most everything, moral of the story, build what you have or want. It is a personal decision. I have a bunch of Chevys, but thats what my boats came with, except the one with the (now) 533 Ford, and one with an Olds, but then again, I build a killer Olds too.....   TIMINATOR    P.S. I took the Ford position because I felt that since there were less Ford builders, there would be less good Ford info.

For CHEAP HORSEPOWER,its FORD!!!!!! 514,533,or 557" easily available in any block, most 70s blocks will bore .080 or more! minimal to NO grinding to clear anything in the crankcase, cast steel Scat or Eagle kit is cheap! No cam interference problems, tall deck height,(6.7 or 6.8 rods fit easily), front oil sump easier to fit into boat, the "small port" heads out flow a BBC oval port head, (intake side)and you can put in big valves(and not necessarily 460 or other BBF valves either, hint, hint), they also have a 1.73 rocker ratio. Heads and blocks are cheaper, ARP main studs will work fine in a 2 bolt block (factory stuff) to 600 HP easily,(you MUST line hone it!),timing is more stable with dist in front(for those of you that don't use crank triggers), a larger dist gear means more stable timing too. The oiling system needs work by someone that knows what it needs, we charge about $60.00 for those mods. The Ford "Blue grommet" ignition box will operate UNDER WATER! and its spark output is great, we use it for our less than maximum effort boat motors, of any brand, and it will trigger from any bodys electronic distributor. For 500-650 HP Ford has the best bang for the buck. I have run and build all of the motors through the years, including hi-perf stroker 540+" Cadillacs! I would never take out a Ford to put in a Chevy. Look for a Ford engine tell all article in Hotboat early next year. I personally have no brand preferences, you can make anything RUN!! We have done Studebaker/Avanti motors as well as Hudson Hornets,409 Chevys and believe it or not, a fair share of hot rod forklift motors!  It is just physics and air flow. LET THE S--TSTORM BEGIN!!!!   TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Heads, whats the difference?
« on: August 16, 2007, 07:15:22 AM »
You can install big stainless valves in any of the 455 heads, and port them. Fill the crossovers with aluminum, weld the exhaust port bridge and they come out all the same, and cheaper than the Ebk heads. Read the "Practical Olds Motor" article in Hotboat from a year or 2 ago, it explains much about the shortblock too. TIMINATOR

Scat cast steel good to at least 600 HP in jet boat use. Don't get greedy with the timing and compression so you don't detonate it. Detonation and hyper-you-screwed me pistons are the 2 major causes of blown up stuff we see. Never seen a crank fail in a jetboat that wasn't caused by somthing else. We used to offset grind stock Ford 460 cranks (2.5"throws) to Pontiac size (2.250") before the 514 kits came out. That allows the use of stock Poncho rods(we used ARP bolts and beam polished, and shotpeened them)and 403 Olds trw forged pistons. Depending on the oversize, you got about 498" with off the shelf parts! We have a bunch of them out in boats, street/strip, and tow vehicles. One has an 8-71 blower with a bugcatcher on alcohol in a yellow Kachina, the last I heard of it, it was still running 7+ years later! As long as there is no detonation, these live forever, and its an offset ground,STOCK FACTORY CAST crank! Moral of story: make sure the oiling system is up to the task, the clearances are correct, don't detonate it, and no problems.  TIMINATOR

I thought that this WAS the spam section....  I didn't mean to offend. I have waaaay too many toys, I need to weed some of them out. My wife fell and herniated 4 discs recently, so I am selling the smaller boats. She can still ride in the 25 Daytona, but we can't launch it by ourselves. :'( I also try to help the others with problems as possible, but running the business and my other gig takes up most of my time. Some of you know what that is...    and yes, I will sell the Challenger  without the engine. Call for details, as I don't get on here as regularly as I'd like. Thanks, TIMM  623-877-8553
