The first time you release that stuff it is suprising if you don't know it is dry chem.  Never really had a "need" for a fire extinguisher until my dirt bike caught on fire after cracking the gas tank.  Ran into the garage and hauled out an old extinguisher only to find that it had lost its charge!  :banghead:

I believe that GT was trying to explain that you need to get the hell out of the boat once a large fire is going.  I did some research and have come up with some numbers regarding a turbulent diffusion fire (most unwanted fires that are not premixed or controlled by a combustion system).

Of course these are just estimates and it greatly depends on the fire and what is burning, but this should give you an idea of what kind of temperatures you would be coming into contact with a fire like Ray's:
                                                          Max Range                Average Temp
Open flames (boat burning etc)                 2012-2192 F                1652F
Warehouse or home                                   2192F                      1652-1832F

As you can see boats don't necessarily burn hotter they are just HOT in general!!!  Skin starts burning at 130F.

The only problem with using water to put out a gas fire (assuming that is what it is) is that the gas floats giving it more surface area to burn.  I think GT hit it on the head with his comment.

What about having a marine wash down pump installed in the boat, you could just hit a switch and pump water all over the fire...Won't work on electrical fires...Of course not much does :thumbdown:

I did some research and decided that plexi glass is probably the best way to go.  finney's can make you one out of tinted plexi for about $500.00.  I was told by another boat owner with a set up in plexi that he had contacted a plastics company who was able to make his for $100.00 with him taking the measurements.

I checked out the before and after pics and i really like the new layout.  It looks a lot more useable now with almost a baha (i know it's a dirty word) layout.

I think i would wait on a panther guy to comment. 

I wouldn't turn down the manual valve, it could cause engine overheating.  You may have a bad check valve if they are water injected seperately from the engine.
