Quick update. I just ran the part number and date code online and found that my carb was one in a bad run of carbs a few years ago. Holley used aluminum from China and it was inferior. It's kind of crazy how bad this problem actually was for Holley, when I was doing some research guys were having problems with their carbs within weeks. Good news is Holley will exchange it for a new one. Bad news, I now have to find my reciept for it,,,, its been a while since I bought the carb and don't remember what I bought it for. :thumbdown:

What you are seeing is a ballfe/muffler. It will be held in with one bolt that you will see on the outside of the header. If you are in California like me, and boat on the lakes out here you will have to have these on otherwise the popo will hassle you.  If you remove them, depending on your motor and hp it can either help or hinder performance. With my last motor, the boat actually ran better with the baffles in than out.Not sure how this new one will do

You don't want any of that crap breaking loose and pluggin up a main jet while running it hard, it will lean it out enough to cause some serious engine damage.

Someone at some point before you probably over soaked that carburetor in either caustic cleaner or an acid bath. Those Holleys are anodized and it looks like it was damaged in a cleaning process and delaminating.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. Only thing is, I tore the carb down last season and it was fine, I never soak the carbs just a quick spray down and dry off with aerosol,  and the carb looked fine at that time.Do you think it could be gas causing this? I know that Ca, is adding ethanol to our gas now and I know that it murfs up fuel systems... Either way I know what I have to do now. Thanks for the help GT

Today I decided to pull apart the carb that I had on the boat and rejet it so It could e out back on a smaller motor. When I pulled the bowls off the insides look like they are peeling( blistered and almost like a dried up river bed). My questions are if any o you have seen this before, what would cause this, and finally is it safe to strip all that shit out of there(what I am doing now) clean and run it? It I like slag almost, if you hit it with a screwdriver or tool it will break off.

If it were mine and I was going for a quick fix I would weld it up. If I was going for a more permanent fix I would graft in a new section of tube and weld in a new bung.

If you weld it up, dot be surprised if you end up chasing the hole around before it fills.

I also wouldn't run a box ( had too many give up on me ) I would go with a hei or a msd pro billet or pertronix flame thrower. Shit you could even just pull the points out of your stick dizzy and add a pertronix unit. If your plugs and wires are older it wouldn't hurt you to replace them.

Going from memory what you are referring to is actually a polyester filler meant as a top coat for final sanding and blending (not really necessary)

Feather edge is a product but in this case that is not what I was meaning. To feather means to sand the edge of the area to be fixed getting ride of the edge of the damage. Thus feathering out the damage to the good surface. You do this for a couple reasons one to reduce the amount of filler needed and to to get rid of the hard edge so your repair will not crack later on down the road.

You are going to want to feather out the hard edge(cracking gel) make your repairs, depending in severity your fillers might be actual re lamination of fiberglass or marglass (fiberglass reinforced bondo) then block smooth and straight, then prime(will show all sins lol)and if it is to your satisfaction finish with gel or paint to suit.

You know I am not sure, and have never noticed.  I do know they work very well  and we use them at work on the roadsters and such that have dual saddle tanks under the bodies.
