BBC 496 cu in rotating assembly, all new parts.  I have not been able to confirm the brand of the crankshaft, but it is a new 4.250" crank with new SCAT H beam rods, 6.385" long, and KB 4.310" hypereutectic flat top pistons.  The pistons are missing the oil ring support rails, should not be a problem to obtain.  This would make a great low buck pump gas combination, particularly with some closed chamber heads.

Arrangements could be made to supply other components and complete as far as desired for additional cost.

I need 1 or a pair of oval port BBC heads Cracked one of mine looking for bare or put together.

I have a few here, what casting number do you have again?

Sometimes you can shim the windage tray with a washer and still have enough threads on the main cap stud if you use a jamb nut.  That probably would have been more helpful before you bought another pan.

The drain hole situation would have been better addressed while the engine was apart, but that crusty stuff should not be too tough to either tap or gently run a drill through to loosen it up.  That's normally something that gets done prior to washing the bare block.

I use a certain impact socket for installing bbc brass plugs, and I seal them with aviation permatex, brushed in the block rather than on the plug.

here is the old store... http://store.socaljetboats.com

its still live, but i dont link to it much anymore. i dont have a lot of time to do stickers anymore.

If Brad does not want to make stickers, and is ok with someone else making them, I do have a friend who is a graphics professional.  To be fair, I will need to verify with Brad, or perhaps he would even want to have my friend make them up if he still wants to sell them.

I ALREADY AHVE THOSE FLIP TO[ FUEL FILLS...IT JUST SEEMS WHEN IT GETS REAL OUT OUTSIDE IT SPITS GAS OUT OF THE TOP OF THEM AND IT RUNS DOWN THE BOW OF THE BOAT

WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM? I WAS ASSUMING THERE ISNT A VENT ON THESE

If you fill your tanks close to full, the heat will expand the gas and cause it to run out.

second one is how do you vent your gas tanks?? i have the flip style caps on mine and i was told to drill a really small hole on the inside of the cap for a vent.......what is your guys opnion of this?

and lastly i need to get my 780 carb rebuilt....and one know of someone that will do it and how much?

I can do the carb, PM or call for cost.

Did you change your fuel fills, or eliminate some other venting?  The tanks definately need some type of air vent, but if the boat was running they should already be vented.

« on: April 21, 2009, 12:21:33 PM »
Everytime I run the boat I end up with oil on my transom, gas tanks, battery, you get the idea. It's a 468 BBC, Melling HV pump, finned aluminum valve covers with moroso baffles on the underside, K&N push in breathers. I also have a set of bolt on aluminum stack type breathers I haven't installed yet, my question is;
Do you guys think the additional breathers will cure my problem?
What about a puke tank?
What about evac tubes off the headers? Will evacs work with slip in baffles?

Other than the oily mess after each session, the boat runs perfect, anyone got any other ideas?
Thanks

Sounds like time to do a leak down test and see how bad the rings are.  Puke tank would help minimize or eliminate some of the mess,  and I can understand you not wanting to pull the engine down right at the beginning of the season, but might as well know what is causing the problem.

What would compression be with a set of '049 ovals (Mortec listed as 122cc chamber)?

Has it been assembled yet?

PM sent  ;D

PM returned, more information later , got in from Parker at 2AM.  It's not yet assembled.

It would have been interesting to see what it would have done with a single 1050, since it may have been undercarbed with the 850(and if that particular 850 actually flowed 850).  Also, the tunnel ram probably had an effect on horsepower gain?

Mellings makes a variety of different pickups.  The description he gave me indicated it was the longer pickup, and is likely to be too close to the bottom of the pan.

After talking with maddog in person, he decided that it's worth the extra effort to pull the pan back off and check.  He described his pickup to me as a Melling part number, and said it was definately longer than the stock one I showed him, so I suggested it may be the pickup for the deeper "truck" type pan.

WTB / Re: bbc carb & intake
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:55:54 AM »
i have a friend looking for a bbc carb like 650 or so and intake to go with it thanks

I have a 750 vacuum secondary Holley, probably needs a kit in it, and one or two GM dual plane intakes.  I can get them out, check condition and arrive at a fair price for them.  I could rebuilt the carb too if he wants.

414
The Weiand manifold is for a Dominator flange carb, so if you wanted to run a 4150 style carb, you should run a manifold that matches rather than having to buy an adapter.  I do have a 4150 type Dart intake, but it's not polished, $325 mint condition, test time only.

415
Yes, I still have the manifold and your choice of either a new 750 Dominator ($550), or a 1050 Dominator that was set up by AED,, still in the box from them($600).

PM if you want more details, photos of one of the carbs, or my phone number.

Thanks!

I have a spare 10 qt pan, new in the box, including pickup and screw in dipstick.  Windage tray bolts into the pan, saving the cost of windage tray main studs.  $400

Please PM for more details.

That's something that probably should have been checked before you bolted the pan on.  I lay a straight edge across the pickup and measure from the pan rails of the block, deducting for the thickness of the pan gasket (or measure with the gasket in place), then do basically the same with the pan, measure the depth.

I like to have very close to 3/8" clearance.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Pushrod selection
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:15:55 AM »
Ok,, so it is a standard deck block.

As I mentioned above, I would be happy to help you check pushrod length also if you bring it here (Glendora), but you would need to figure out how to seal it up for the trip so you don't get a bunch of dirt in it.

While it's possible that stock length pushrods may work, you should check rather than just sticking them in and assuming they will be ok.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Pushrod selection
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:16:25 PM »
I have to assume that you merely put rings and bearings in the engine, otherwise you would have gotten into having to know what parts you were dealing with to make sure you bought the right parts?  The casting number on the block would help verify.

Regardless of standard or tall deck,, changing the cam and rockers means you should measure for correct pushrod length.   I have some stockers you could borrow to see how the geometry is.  If it wasn't freshly assembled and clean I would say bring the whole thing and I would help you make sure you get the correct length.

Are the cam bearings installed?

Good question, I had to go look.  The cam bearings in it are used.  I will install a new set for just the cost of the bearings if you want.  I normally grind and wash a block prior to installing cam bearings.

Thanks.. Unfortunately, it's not it big enough.. I don't know the exact measurement, but I think the drain plug bolt on the milodon pan has threads that are about 1 1/4"..

That might be just a large pipe thread plug, easy to buy an adapter and cap and use a hose as I described above.

I'm kinda liking this plan, I'm pulling the trigger on a new(to me) pan in the morning. Does anyone make a steel an fitting I can have welded in, or would I need to get like a 2 piece o-ringed deal, and hope it doesn't loosen up? I'm not so crazy about the 2nd option.
Kreg
If the pan does not have a 1/2" pipe bung already, you can get one welded in.  Then you simply use a regular AN adapter and cap.  I used a cheaper brass pushlock fitting in a chunk of old garden hose as my drain line, long enough to extend past my cavitation plates into a bucket.

There are also AN fittings (Rex Marine) that go into the standard drain plug hole, but that restricts flow quite a bit, still neater than having a hose lying in the bilge all the time.
