It's nice to see that at least SOME of you guys like a little boat to go along with
your engine  ;D

Can you hear after a day of running with the over the transom headers??  Just curious.

Sharp though, very sharp!

I'm using the 95cc heads.  I didn't see the need for more compression than 9.75.

Right now I've been using regular grade pump gas with no issues.

I want all I can get out of this combo and I'll be happy.  I know this isn't a 70 mph boat but 65 seems very reachable with this package.

I'll have to paint the scale on the balancer so I can read it.  I'll work up to the 34 a bit at a time to make sure it doesn't detonate.

The long bolt logs seem to have given it about 100- 150 rpms.  It's hard to really nail that down because of different water and wind conditions.

The  run yesterday on the gps was max 62.5 mph.  The only thing different was the logs.  61.5 max the last time.  I wish I could say the long bolts gave it that but was it wind? water?

We'll play with the timing this week to see what else may be there.

478
But what about the MPH?   ???
Chevy guys  :banghead:

boat length in Feet,  make of engine, gestimated HP,  RPM's, impeller  and MPH  who's top dog?

mine's 23 ft.

ford 460  425  HP maybe-

61.5   mph gps.   at 5100 rpms   A impeller

Now let's have some fun with this one  ;D

Let's keep it real though!

Time for an update.  I put on the long bolt logs, jetted the 850 at 78 primary 80 secondary.
The rpm's top out at 5100 to 5250 depending on load and wind.
What total advance are you guys running?

That damm chrome balancer makes it so hard to see the timing marks I'm guessing it's pretty close
28 degrees total now.

I was going to play with that but I've just been taking it easy on the engine for the most part to break it in nice and easy.  The GPS showed a best of 61.5 the only day I took it out.  I borrowed it from my brother....

I'm happy with the jetting, I do need a slightly heavier secondary spring it has a bit of a flat spot before it takes off.

I'll just finialize the timing advance and be happy with that.   I'll be putting on a place diverter this winter and maybe a new impeller.  That remains to be seen.

What top end are you guys seeing from something similar to a 23 footer with an A impeller, Berkeley 12JE?

I don't mean with a speedometer,,, I mean with a GPS.   My speedo says 64 to 65 MPH when the GPS said 61.5.  I'd probably be satisfied if I didn't have use of the GPS   ;D

Great job on the pictures!  She's sold, I'll be putting one on this winter.
Tom, I'll be in touch!
Thank you all for a job well done.   she's still smiling and so am I!

Would you guys do me a favor and post your roost pictures.   I'm working on my wife
to get her to agree to buying a place diverter.   It's easier to explain new things when they agree ahead of time  :D

I told her what fun it would be to scatter the lake lice and she just doesn't believe the water will go UP.

Thank you!

483
Did you pull the plugs to see if you can find a or the bad cylinder s?

Check compression from there.  Maybe a bad plug or wire.  That would be wishing for the best.

LC with a roost like yours I don't suppose the jet ski's try jumping your wake  ;D
Around here they like to buzz the back of the boat like dickheads.  I can just guess
how much fun it would be to wait till there just about there and raise the roost ::)

You guys have me convinced to go ahead and put one on at the end of the season.  I have a 3rd engine on the stand to build over the winter and will probably give it a bit more cam.  This motor has a comp cams 278 marine now, I may go up another peg for the next one.

I have the pistons here so all I need is bearings and rods.  I won't use stock rods or pistons, I've seen some ugly things out of them  ???

The aluminum heads really brought the engine to life along with the rpm air gap intake.  I'll just build a short block so I don't know if I'll put it in or not for the start of next summer.  The impeller, place diverter and short block should give me something to do till spring makes a come back.

What kind of RPM's are you guys pulling from your 460's?   I've seen 5200 once but usually only get to 5-5100 on a half mile banzi run.  The old motor ran out of smoke around 4650 rpms, with stock heads and pistons.  This is with an  A impeller and 23.5 feet of boat.

Jet Pumps / Re: New impeller for Berkeley 12JE

Thank you for all the input.  I'm on two weeks vacation starting yesterday so there will be no taking the boat down now.   You guys don't disapear around the end of September do you?

I'll probably do the changes then.   I don't want to risk down time in the season.

I will be doing the place diverter and pulling the impeller for inspection.  If it just has a few nicks
are you guys saying just trim it up a bit?

I really appreciate you guys being there!

Do you have a picture of the floor mount for the place diverter control?

To the other post the HP is about 450,   RPMs 5100-5200 depending on load and wind direction  :)

I just thought after 31 years it may be getting tired.  I know it needs trimmed up at the very least.
I thought I would change the impeller if I put on a place diverter.

Tom, what's involved in changing the impeller?   Will I have to replace the wear ring to fit it properly or is it just a change out?

I'm not to worried about having enough tools to do the job.   What I AM worried about is having
to little knowledge to keep from screwing something up  :banghead:

What brand impeller would you recommend and what would the price be delivered to 16652 central PA?

I'm also interested in a place diverter for the 12JE.   How do you control them?  Where does the control wind up on the interior?   Floor, by the throttle on the side or what?  I don't have a foot throttle.

All I can say is thank god for this forum!   A little knowledge is dangerous, but with your help things don't seem such a big deal anymore.

Thank you! ;D

Goooood lord nooooo!
It's a warmed over 460.

The 750 carb is gone now in favor of an 850 and we'll be installing
long bolt logs this Thursday.

The lake bugs here like to try to spray people with their baby jets.  So tell me, how far do you think you can you throw them off their baby boat with a blast from your jet.   :D

I wouldn't want to do jail time but to fix some of these butt heads would be poetic
justice.

Back on track.  Where do you buy parts for your jets?   I've done nothing to improve the jet
other than having it rebuilt.  What makes these things run, as in what makes them better?

I know nothing about them other than they change the exit angle.  What brands are available and what drives?  Elec?  Hyd?  manual?   I know nothing of what's available.

What do you guys recommend?   I'll probably do the impeller change and maybe a place diverter over the winter if it's a big job.  I don't want it down now.

Anyone else with a 24 footer have one?  How does it effect your boat?

Would a place diverter be of any benefit to a 24 foot jet?  I have a 12Je Berkeley.
Do they help top end at all?   My out of the hole dig is fine so no help needed
there.

Would I be wasting my money looking for more top end?

Will these things knock jet skiers off their seats  ;D

That would be fun!   They are really getting out of hand on our lake.  You get a good head of steam
up and they pull right across your path.  Are they all nuts or is it just here in good old Central Pa?

Could you give me some prices on the impellers, which brand do you recommend?

If I go away from Berkeley will I have to mess with the wear ring?

The jet was rebuilt about 5 years ago with limited use till last year.  I got remarried and the new
wife loves the lake and boat  ;D

Thank you.

Jet Pumps / New impeller for Berkeley 12JE
« on: August 01, 2008, 06:31:42 AM »
I have a Berkeley 12JE with a 31 year old impeller on it.   I'm thinking it's time to put on a new one  ::)  I can feel some burrs on the inside through the clean out hole.

Anyway to the question.  I run about 5000 RPM's on top so would the original type aluminum be ok?  I run a nice deep lake so picking up crap is at a mininum.

Where is the best place to pick up an A impeller and should I stick with a Berkeley brand?
Do I need the special tool to remove the old one or will a puller do it?  Does the impeller need to be heated up to pull from the shaft?

The jet was rebuilt 5 years ago.

Thank you for your help

495
we ran it out a half mile today on the GPS, 60.5 MPH in a 23.5 foot boat, A impeller.
I think that's pretty good from the Comp cams 278 extreme marine cam in a heavy boat.

Thank you, I have 2 sets on the way.

To bad you don't have a spare carb to try.

499
When I put on the roller rockers and a stud girdle it required tall valve covers.  The upward manifolds
hit them.  I wish I could run them as they have a much nicer tone than logs.

I have them on my spare engine but I should probably sell them since I had to move my exhaust exit through the hull.  I would need longer hose for them to work now.

Make me an offer I can't refuse and they're yours.  :)
