He got it fixed, give him a break! Doesn't need more work or parts. Congratulations!

I agree though,in the end,  I would go MSD or all Mallory (were it me) as well, but sounds like you got the cruiser doing what it needs to do, and congats! You're first 911 solved easily! One of many to come, lol I'd just run the hell out of it for now!

Ray

We'll talk ignitions after the season, Terry made me realize how bad point systems are.

Yes, buy some fuel! Your price is good and fair, great actually in drum size! if I'da built my engine to require it, you'd be sending a truck tio Casa Grande, lol.  I paid $8.50 a gallon at the dragstrip here a few weeks ago!

So good, smoking deal guys, really, despite the oil company robbery, but when they got you by the balls, oh well.

Theres some good info in there. If the contrainer is truely sealed (0 air, in a vacuum) I could see how that would be the case. however, how I read and understand that the fuel airates and the adams start to seperate and do different things becouse of the o2.

As far as price, Is there more production process in 91 and higher then there is in 86? I would think you are paying for the production and the lab time to make it correct. in other words, it takes more effort to produce  1 gallon of 91 and higher then 86 or diesel correct?

Good assumption, and normal, but nope.

The reason is oil companies make MORE from the by products and lubricants than they do from gasoline. I shoulda made that clearer. Gasoline is a "Loss Leader", those of you with retail bacground know what that is.

So, hence, the more they can pull out of a barrel of oil as by products, the more profit they can make. Anyone remember the days when Premium was 98 octane? Even when unleaded became the norm?

The truth is, it takes far LESS effort and refining to make 91 octane than say 86 ( if I remember right, like 14 more steps to make regular over premium). BUT, what they make off what they get outta the difference is VERY profitable. Think of it this way. Ever hear the Candle companies or Johnson Wax Bitch when crude prices go through the roof? No. The Oil companies NEVER pass on their costs to them, and if they do, it ain't much.  Anyone every hear of a can of Pledge doubling or tripling in price to say $10 overnight when the Saudis decide they need a new mercedes fleet? Nope.

No. We pay at the pump so big companies do not have to charge other big companies to pay more for their by products.

When we complain about gas prices, look at the profits they are making. We don't underdstand that we are covering the increased oil proices for big companies that  profit most from the by product materials the big oil companies produce. They rarely pay a penny more than  they have for years for their stuff!

As far as gasoline and octane is concerned, think of it like backward wire guages, less is more refining, and more is less.

Man this thread has taken a political and economics educational twist, lol Sorry!!!! Talk about a jack!

Tom, forgive me for this, but how many people out there can claim a Blown Big Block as the simple  modest 'Family Boat"?

I mean, really, my son is still VERY leary of the Tunnel ram on the Moo (Most likely my driving of it, but still),

Great looking "cruiser", BTW lol

Ray

I think we need to rename you the "Extreme",  ;D

i got a barrel of 110 in my garage that was purchased in late october....how long can it sit before it starts to go bad?

Brad, I grew up in oil country, and did service work at both Pennzoil and Quaker States national HQ when they were both in Oil City, Pennsylvania (They've both since left to Texas, but back then, they were literally less than a block from each other).Learned a lot from those guys. Both main refineries were there in Reno, Pa and Emlenton, PA.

Here's the deal on octane, as I understand it from the chemical engineers at both companies. The higher the octane, the LESS pure the fuel is, and hence more resistant to detonation, because of the waxes and other stuff in there. The reason high octane (or premium) fuel is more expensive is because the oil companies get less by product per barrel they can also sell, like the parafine wax, etc. HIgh octane fuels have long had the stigma of being "More purified" or "hopped up", and that is simply not the case. Your regular, or 86-88 octane fuel is actually far more purified than the premium 91 stuff.

So, IMHO, to spend $5 a gallon or (gasp) $7 a gallon for the stuff is rediculous. Why is Diesel (FAR less purified than 108 octane racing gas) more expensive than premium at the gas station? 100 or more octane gasoline should REALISTICALLY cost somewhere between premium pump gas and pump diesel, as that is truly all it really is. Nascar and NHRA must be outta their minds to be supporting this.

As far as how long you can keep it, indefinately, if fully sealed in the drum, just shake the shit out of it before you use it if it sits for a long time. (How long do they store it in the "reserves"??? What's stored in the national reserves is purified fuel, not crude, as most think.

And you guys now know where the Billion dollar oil conpany executive bonus money comes from.

Ray

Sorry to thread jack you on your fuel sale, this has nothing at all to do with what your costs are, really.

Good find Steve. I had a 96 new, 318, and once towed my pops bulldozer  (TD4), much to his surprise, on it's trailer for 10 miles over hill and dale back in Pennsylvania with no real problem.

You should like that truck. And better mileage than my F350 gets, lol.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: carb to scoop connection?
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:55:28 PM »
Here's the installed scoop.  You can see the wingnuts and carb base adapters. Hopefully you have those. The bases are also slotted, so the scoop needs to be fully tightened into place where you want it before you start installing/adjusting the linkage. But assembly is pretty easy. put on the bases, air cleaners or flame arrestors, tighten down making sure the bases remain straight, then drop the scoop on and attach it with the stell straps and wingnuts. Then  install and adjust the linkage. The lever for the butterfly's is a splined shaft and the linkage is adjustable, so infininate possiblities exist with it. I like mine, although the butterflies and linkage arm are in for a titty pink anodizing, lol.

I'll go take some more detailed pics of it in a minute, but yeah, that's pretty much it. Tom's right, the butterfly's really have nothing to do with air flow except at WOT. When I cruise around at say 2500-300 rpm, they're barely open, but open fully at WOT. Took a bit of time to get it, but after I figure out I needed to get the carbs idle screws dialed in before I even messed with that, was a snap. Just set it with a tiny bit of slack with the throttle closed (Normal position).

There shoulda been an adapter, or 2 for dual carbs, (Look like an air cleaner base), two long straps with 4 holes each and 8 wingnuts with it. If not, look up the Scoop at Summit, they have the adapter kits in stock last I checked. (Was gonna adapt mine to single carb, but put the tunnel on instead.)

Dunno why or how I missed this whole thread. I have uncovered similar problems with The Moo. (78 Rebel). Interested in seeing how you solved them, though I'm running a JE pump, not a JC. On smooth water, which until Sunday at Saguaro is all it has really seen, runs out great.

Boat beat the living hell outta us Sunday. Got up this morning and felt like I played in the Super Bowl with no helmet or pads, lol. Could not really run the thing above 3000 rpm and at that low speed rides the bow pretty high. Too many wake barges! (Damn things so big they should only be used offshore,  and they all were trying to set speed records I think :screwy:) But we saw more than our share of 2+ footers (Aired the boat out once, THAT was exciting). Didn't have much of a problem with it at Bartlett, much better ride. Maybe the current and narrowness of the lake has a lot to do with that.

Gonna go check this hook/rocker thing out, although the boat has not spent extended time on a trailer, maybe it's a common problem with the Sleekcrafts.

Gonna keep this boat off THAT lake until I figure this one out! We'll take the Bisemeyer from now on up there, it'd prolly ride fine(Hydraulic place and ride plates), and it did for my buddies last weekend.

Was a really fun ride out there today. Although my brother never showed to bring up the Blue Meanie ( Aka Blue my wad), we ran the Moo boat all day long without a real hiccup. Did seem to be running on 6 cylinders at idle when we pulled into the marina, which seemed odd. Pulled back out of the no wake zone alone while my bud and my kids got the truck, and it ran balls out just fine. Still did it when I came back in. Maybe it's uneven idle is catching up with it, I dunno. I'll check plugs and crap tomorrow, but I'm thinking the baffles had a little bit to do with it (They're coming back out, just so everyone knows, lol, the " worst lake in Az for noise restrictions", yeah, saw 4 other jet boats, none had baffles in their OT's, to hell with that!)

Still didn't get her opened up. Too rough out there with the wind and wake barges, but still a nice lake. Did light it up a few times, but could only sustain around 3000 or so rpm (4000 on one burst) , This thing does NOT like really rough water! Aired it out a couple of times. I can see now why the kids are afraid of it, lol. The boat wants to run, no doubt about it, but is picky about its water. Not a good thing, I'm thinking. Maybe the diverter will help that.

But was fun! Great lake were it not for the wake barges!
