HT is a broad term that covers many different things: modifying an alloy to increase it's strength, softening (annealing) an alloy to remove or reduce internal stresses, case or through hardening an alloy to make it more wear or impact resistant, or creating a tough core material with a hard, brittle crust.
For real basic uses, people can do "home-style" HT techniques like quench and temper with oil, water or air. You could probably anneal an alloy at home if you had the right heat source and could control time and temperature. This is OK for a plow or a chisel or shovel or something - I've done it myself.
But if you want to modify a part that goes inside any kind of performance machinery - boat, car, airplane, surgical device, spaceship - then use a professional HT facility. We use several in the LA area. Accurate Steel Treating is good. www.accuratesteeltreating.com

Yep I know, I know.... when I was a kid in the late 60's living in the orchard country we would play in the sheds where they stored the sacks of chemicals for the spray rigs. The chemicals?? DDT baby! It's got a very unique smell. We didn't know DDT from ABC we were kids. We'd dare each other to eat the stuff. And we would hide out in there for hours or make a fort out of the shack.

"To give you an idea of how low the inventory has gotten and how high the demand for the low end single family homes - the last 10 offers that I have written for clients below $600,000 have ALL gone to a multiple offer situation. In the County of San Diego, we have gone from 17 months of inventory at the beginning of the year to 4.9 months as of July - AND in the coastal cities we are now UNDER 3 months of available inventory. So, yes, where the government financing is available (conforming loans are loans up to $417,000 and "agency" loans are up to $679,500) - we are working through the foreclosure (and non foreclosure) activity at a pretty good clip."
This kind of data is IMO essentially good news for the recovery of the economy.

Yeah I feel yur pain GT. The home owners who "survived" and still own are fugged for awhile. I've got that issue with my Boreigan home and a rental house I own up there. All of us who hung in and still kept their house will have to wait and wait and wait. But all I'm saying is that if the lower priced (relative term) houses start moving in the (formerly) "hot" markets - then that is better than nothing moving at all.
My RE agent friends say there aint chit moving in the higher price stuff. So anyone other than 1st time entry level buyers are fkd. But like I said - as far as my damaged brain cells can take it I think the news about low end is good. But certainly willing to concede that I may be talking out my ass.

OK I think I have good news.... trying to figure this out still but:
I'm back to full time work in San Diego area and started surfing the real estate listings looking to try and buy a "cheap" house to live in and then rent once I relo the wife and kids. Now I am a "veteran" CA real estate guy not a typical Oregonian in shock over the difference in prices.
Anyhoo I am STUNNED over how about 75%+ of the houses for sale under $350k are in CONTINGENT status. I even had to ask my agent buddy WTF that meant because I have never seen that level of listings in that status. He says yeah those are legit qualified offers with buyers likely to qualify for the loan. Yeah the sellers are mostly banks and short sales or foreclosures but....
There are a shit load of house sales on the "low end" (add a zero for CA prices) of the market that are about to close. That is going to then trickle up into slightly fewer offers in the next price range and so on...
I'm still thinking about what this all means but my initial reaction is yes it is fkd for the people who lost those homes in foreclosure but now we gotta move on and the fact that there's going to be some movement in the low end is probably good news.

Update. After a few wild goose chases I have figured out that the tranny is probably a Borg Warner M11. (I found the original options ticket in the glove box, got the code for the transmission.) It came with optional cooling lines and my truck has the tranny cooler. I am hoping that the two tubes I found laying in the bottom of the pan are internal tubes for the cooling. Can't find any diagrams on the internet that show them though.
Will have to wait until a weekday and call up a crusty old transmission repair guy who can remember these units. Seems like they were on some of the IH and AMC stuff - maybe even Jags too. Then I will ask him if I can re-assemble, where the hell the tubes go, fill w/oil and drive the truck to their shop and can they fix the friggin thing for cheap or should I just tow the bitch instead of drive it.
Original base sticker price in 1968 was $3146.63. Options were $1503.68. Freight from Springfield OH to Auburn, WA was $180. Think I had a Schwinn Stingray that year.

When I pulled the tranny pan off this is what I found clanging around in the bottom of it. And the longer tube had a broken off piece of bailing wire around it and the other end was tied off up in the guts of the tranny.
Filter was sort of half hooked up and hanging there. Red blobs of jelly all over it. Fluid actually look relatively red and smelled OK.
Quick inspection and I can only find two holes where the ends of these tubes might go. One looks like it might be clipped into the bottom of the pan. There is a spot welded bracket broke off on the bottom of the pan.
Odds that I will be driving this thing to San Dog are getting much lower now.
If anyone knows obscure IH trannys, please advise me on whether I can "just" try and hook this chit back up and git er done. I am also posting this on an IH website but those guys don't have as many eyeballs as SCJB.

« on: October 16, 2009, 06:13:48 PM »I would check the fluid level and see what the fluid looks like. If its all gross, rusty or a weird color change the fluid and filter, it may be gummed up inside and needs new fluid to unstick things.
Affirmative on the gross rusty look. Rusty and slightly milky looking. Good to know that it is possible that it may fix itself with just an oil and filter change!

I've got this 68 Travelall running (sort of) and it has a funny symptom. When I put it in any gear even R it acts like it is trying to run in high gear. It bogs down the motor and stalls it out. If I give it throttle it will move but it wants to move fast (even in R) and I started wondering if maybe something inside the tranny is locked up and won't let it slip.
Would something like this happen to an old truck that has been sitting for years without running?
I know nothing about automatic transmissions. Thanks lads!

Bare minimum we will have several years where the traditional measures of economic health will give us mixed signals and therefore nobody will know what the f is really going on. The more that the average Joe can get used to this environment and just say - I can't rely on any one or any small group of data, then the better.

Remember that depending on where you live, the EMPLOYMENT rate is 80-90%. And in that MAJORITY of people - there's still young couples screwing like rabbits. Then they pop a couple of squealers out and the next thing you know they think they need a 1st house or a move up to the next home. Well yeah they have a shit load of paperwork to fill out and the process is harder and slower, but SOME of them qualify and they are in a buyer's market and will start BUYING. And boy would I like to be screwing like a rabbit still and have mortgage rates that are sub 5% instead of 10+ when I bought my first house.
There's the old saying "markets hate uncertainty" they are OK with known good news or known bad news. But they hate not knowing. Well right now nobody really knows - that's why it's so weird. A period of mixed signals. 12 more months and it will be more apparent what is really going on.

OK Roger that. To get it out of the field I think I will work with the nearly empty tank. I'll drain whatever I can get out (use an electric pump or a drill driven one) and then do I just pour some fresh gas in and then pump out and throw away like 1/2 gallon or so of it?
And is it OK to try getting it to run without tearing into the mech fuel pump and the carb?
BTW I am not trying to save the motor. Just need it to run for about 1000 miles then that's it.

I'm going to try and fire up a '68 International Travelall that I've had sitting around. The gas is probably at least 3 or 4 years old. It has two tanks. One has almost nothing in it and the other about 4-5 gallons.
Do I have to drain it or can I pour something in to mix and give it new life?

I was born and raised in Oregon and also raised to hate Californians.... Then I got old enough to work and waddayaknow - there's no work in Oregon. So I moved to Silicon Valley in 1980 and have kept trying to stay back in Oregon ever since. But no matter what I try I keep ending up back in CA because there's a shit load of people, activity, dynamics and therefore stuff happens in CA. Oregon is great to live in because nobody else lives here - therefor no fuggin economic activity. Second in the nation for unemployment only to that hell-hole Michigan.
Now I am about to move back to CA for the 4th or 5th time. Chasing the $$$$ again.
But yeah I sure wish CA would pull it's liberal head out of it's ass and quit coming up with all the retarded stuff like Gaagaagoogoo muscles and CO warning stickers on boats and gay this gay that. Spend spend spend oh hey how come there's no money anymore?

even though it says there is someone in there, it most likely means they arent....and if you notice they drop out just as you log in...it means you just bumped their 'ghost' session.
