I would check the fluid level and see what the fluid looks like. If its all gross, rusty or a weird color change the fluid and filter, it may be gummed up inside and needs new fluid to unstick things.

Affirmative on the gross rusty look. Rusty and slightly milky looking. Good to know that it is possible that it may fix itself with just an oil and filter change!

Dump the fluid and add a couple bottles of Lucas transmission fix..Or (being in Oregon and all) Marvel Mystery oil....

The valve body is full of goo......Also let it idle for a while to get it warm....

I did a ScoutII my bud bought for $200, the dude said the tranny was siezed up (I thought that was weird).

Added some Marvell and let it run for about an hour and he drove it out of there after replacing two tires...The old owner about shit himself.

When I pulled the tranny pan off this is what I found clanging around in the bottom of it. And the longer tube had a broken off piece of bailing wire around it and the other end was tied off up in the guts of the tranny.

Filter was sort of half hooked up and hanging there. Red blobs of jelly all over it. Fluid actually look relatively red and smelled OK.

Quick inspection and I can only find two holes where the ends of these tubes might go. One looks like it might be clipped into the bottom of the pan. There is a spot welded bracket broke off on the bottom of the pan.

Odds that I will be driving this thing to San Dog are getting much lower now.  If anyone knows obscure IH trannys, please advise me on whether I can "just" try and hook this chit back up and git er done. I am also posting this on an IH website but those guys don't have as many eyeballs as SCJB.

Update. After a few wild goose chases I have figured out that the tranny is probably a Borg Warner M11. (I found the original options ticket in the glove box, got the code for the transmission.) It came with optional cooling lines and my truck has the tranny cooler. I am hoping that the two tubes I found laying in the bottom of the pan are internal tubes for the cooling. Can't find any diagrams on the internet that show them though.

Will have to wait until a weekday and call up a crusty old transmission repair guy who can remember these units. Seems like they were on some of the IH and AMC stuff - maybe even Jags too. Then I will ask him if I can re-assemble, where the hell the tubes go, fill w/oil and drive the truck to their shop and can they fix the friggin thing for cheap or should I just tow the bitch instead of drive it.

Original base sticker price in 1968 was $3146.63. Options were $1503.68. Freight from Springfield OH to Auburn, WA was $180. Think I had a Schwinn Stingray that year.
