So there are things to watch out for & places n the lake to avoid.


How would someone who is not familiar with the no-go areas find out about those hazards specifically, in order to avoid getting in too shallow water & sucking up some unwanted stuff.

I mean, if the lake is as shallow as 6' deep in the middle, a jet pump can easily grab stuff from the bottom if you are charging through, right???

Hey all,
Been taking my boat up to Silverwood for testing & am thinking about Elsinore as an alternative, (mostly because it's closer to OC)
 I keep reading about folks picking up sucking up rocks & stuff, other folks say it's fine out there. 
What is the real deal?
What are the dangers, or things to watch out for, etc.?
Is it risky interns of possibly damaging your pump, or? ?

Compression test is the easiest and will tell you right away if you need to tear stuff down.

O.K., did a cold compression test & a pressure test on the water side per your instructions.


Compression test: #1 -150    #2 -149
                             #3 -149    #4 -149
                             #5 -150    #6 -149
                             #7 -149    #8 -150


These numbers are similar to what I had before the overheating event. 
Plugs looked good, or at least nothing abnormal, I think. Insulators are a toasty brown, & air/fuel rings showing maybe a bit of a rich mixture.  (If there was water getting in the cylinders & burning with the fuel would they look washed out or clean?)


For the pressure test on the water side, I put around 12-15 lbs of air in the system after sealing it up.  I could hear the air as it was filling up, then listened pretty carefully around the block, logs & didn't hear any air escaping. Used a  length of 5/8" hose to listen into each spark plug port & didn't hear any air entering there.  Now, to be honest, noticing a subtle leak is probably beyond my skill level, plus a bit of ambient noise were I was doing the test (just outside my garage) might have prevented the test from being absolutely conclusive?…..

She should hold 10 psi for quite a while.

Which of the three tests would you recommend doing first, compression, leak down, or pressure test?

Pretty simple really.

Plug the thermostat outlets by putting the hose on both fittings Then pressurize the inlet of the water pump holes at the tee. Put 15 psi of air on it and listen.

The compression test cold would be enough information to see if it has to be pulled apart IMO.

Cool, that does sound pretty simple.
I want to hear no air leaking = good?
If air is leaking, or where the leak (sounds like it) is coming from, is going to indicate? Cracks, or blown gaskets, or??

AND get a GATE VALVE

It's got a gate valve, probably 8 years old by now. It seemed to be working o.k.  A new ball valve would be up upgrade though?…..

Newbie, with my first jet boat & I think I screwed up already……

Finally got my Rogers on the water for the first time this past weekend. Everything was looking good at first, then she started overheating. Ended up pegging the temp gauge. Limped back to the dock & shut down the engine. Everything was hot including the logs & risers, & could hear the water boiling or creating steam in the block & exhaust.Even though I have logs & risers, I thought I would be a bit too clever & install a pressure relief valve. During the run the valve was leaking & I am pretty sure I had it adjusted to too low of a pressure. After getting it back on the trailer & thinking about it I am pretty sure the pressure relief valve was bleeding off enough pressure that the engine wasn't getting enough water volume from the pump, but that's just a guess. Checked the dipstick & didn't see any water in the oil, & engine ran well before I cooked it…..

[/size]The main questions I have are: Is it possible that I have fried or compromised the engine by running it that hot?  Any ideas on what to do next to determine if I caused any damage?[/color]

Been using VR1 for years on my street rod running a solid flat tappet cam with no problems. It, along with my boat will get the Joe Gibbs next oil change.
Sounds like The VR1 will be more available once the labeling issue is resolved, but the JG sounds like a better, more focused product overall.
A few extra bucks every oil change is way cheaper than replacing a flat cam……..


BTW: the Lucas brand 'Hot Rod & Classic' motor oil claims to be high in ZDDP content & appears to be available at Autozone & such.  Seems like it would work in a pinch if you need to add a quart or so to your engine already running VR1

Looking for a SHORT BBC ski tow in decent shape. Hopefully one that is not that swept back.
Reason is that there is not much room between the engine block & transom cover. (see pic)



I'll pay cash, or I you are interested, I have a new BBC ski tow purchased from Eddie Marine that I'll do a straight trade on. Standard tall style. Only did a test fit (didn't work out), perfect condition.

I replaced the aftermarket white face gauges on my Rogers with these.  Decent quality, price, & spot on nostalgic look.

Silverwood- a bit of a drive
Perris- Diaper city- pull that out of your pump
Marine stadium LBC- salt
Puddlestone- odd or even?

I'd go to Silverwood during the week, weekends- forget it.
Prolly Frank G next- weekdays also
Marine Stadium or Newport harbor over Perris
Perris- well just drive to the river

What other local lakes are friendly to jet boats?  I just finished getting my Rogers ready for some shake-down runs before I take a river trip.  Initially I was planning to hit Elsinore, but based on what I have been reading here on SCJB, the water level there gives me concern.....
