When its done and there is Hp increases, its been done and gives a cool hot rod look....Where in the hell does ceramic look cool  :screwy:...its your own preference. Looking for longevity, go another route. How many boats owners on this site will install parts and then never change anything ever.

I totally agree, it's a matter of preference. I happen to prefer ceramic...

I call BS on the ceramic coating. ( might as well call it crematic coatin for us on boats)

Yes it HELPS,  but there is no way on God's green earth it cools down enough to stop burns or any other problems we see with them.

You show me otherwise in normal boating applications, and I will show you my privates in town square, Pheonix at High noon.........

Ray

We'll see this winter when I get headers and have them coated. However, I don't think your privates are worth driving all the way to Phoenix for  :screwy:

VERY lean. The guys are right. Check them all to be sure about distribution. If that's from #7, it's primarily fed from the secondaries, etc. You want them all to look they were dipped in coffee.

As white as that is, I might consider going 4 sizes if it were me, and upping the accelerator pumps. Depends on what the rest look like and how often you were into the secondaries, etc.

You might want to invest in a Holley Jet kit. Cheaper over the long haul, and you get a box full of jet sizes to play with. Removing your choke probably helped the engine more than anything.

Ray

The more that I look at those pics, the more I tend to agree with you that he should go up four sizes to start. The accelerator pumps may not have to be changed, but depending on camshaft/engine vacuum he may have to change the power valve(s).

You could always go more than two sizes at a time, but everyone that I've spoken to about carbs always recommends two. When I first got my boat going again I startedout with 74/80 and my plugs looked just like yours. Im at 78/83 and now the plugs have a nice light mocha color to them. Every motor setup is different though and there no guide that says exactly what a jet size should be for a particular application  It's all trial and error. You'll figure it out.

ok thanks for the help!  im assuming demon jets are similar to holley?

I'm almost certain that they are the same. Demon and Holley are very similiar. Good luck

Ya, you're lean. The porcelain on those plugs should be a light to medium mocha color. If the front and rear plugs look that way, a jet size increase is in order. Start off by increasing the primary and secondary side by 2 sizes then run the boat.

pulled one from each side and they're equally beautiful.  im stumped.

Looks lean to me. Is that a front or rear plug?

Where in the world does THAT look cool? or even work on a boat? Wrapping your headers up like a 3rd degree burn victim? Really?   :screwy:

On the other, yes, ceramic coating DOES help, but burns are still inevitable with them. Doesn't cool them THAT much, just protects the finish and lowers the exit exhaust temps.

I think you're on the right track. Especially with a blown engine. Once you install these, prove my point with your results............

Ray

I disagree with you sir on the subject of ceramic coating. Several years ago we installed a set of plain Hooker headers on a customers '73 Bronco w/ a 302 Those things got so hot that it melted his plug wires and almost caught his carpet on fire. We pulled them off and he had them coated. Put the headers back on and problem solved. I have ceramic coated headers on my '70 el camino and I am amazed as to how cool they stay. However, I do agree with you on the header wrap situation. Not only does that stuff look ugly, but it also traps moisture and eventually the headers will rot.

I've been dealing with the same exact problem ever since I got my boat going again. I've tried tuning the carb, adjusting the accel pumps, changing jets and and changing power valves. I got so sick of going around in circles that I've decided to just live with it for now. Maybe this winter I'll send the carb out to a pro that I found in Whittier. If you give him all the specs of your boat, he'll rebuild and set the car up accordingly.

Went to Lake Mohave last week with a group of friends and their boats. 5 Straight days of boating. Zero issues with the Rogers. Here are a few pics.

I have a breather on each valve cover. One breather has a nipple where I have a hose attached btween there and the vacuum port on the base of the carb.

A good friend has a really nice set of Hardin logs for a bbc. No snails. If you're interested, I can put you in contact with him as I know he's looking to sell them. In my quest for more hp I'm definitely goin with headers. The setup that ka0tyk has on his boat looks real nice but I am not as mechanically inclined as he is. $700.00 for his setup is a great price. I'm leaning toward getting a set of wet Bassett or Rewarder o/t headers and having them ceramic coated to keep the temps down. With a good set of mufflers and the water, I think that the noise will be tolerable. However, I don't run a blower.

I like the airgap. I know of a couple of guys running that manifold with no issues. Both are 19' jet boats.

You need to get it out a few times before attempting a holiday weekend.

Jet boats don't react like any other boat and you will want to get to know how it runs before getting into a busy situation.

I'm sure you understand that a jet boat doesn't turn without giving it throttle.... it needs to be instinct to hit the gas when your mind is telling you to lift.  8)

Looking forward to seeing it on the water

Agreed 100%

I'm also looking at upgrading to something bigger as well. I currently have a 19' and I want to step up to a 21' like kaOtyk mentioned. I've never been in a 19' that cuts thru chop like a hot butter, but it definiteley will be better that what you have now. If I were in the market for a larger boat now, I'd offer you my Rogers. But with a kid on the way, I'm gonna have to wait. Good luck with the boat hunt.

Wonder if these would work with the Nicson logs on my bbc. How do these sound compared to full blown headers?

Your Rogers looks like Steve King's MJ (Modified Jet) from the 70's Could it have had stars on the bubble and red/white stripes on the deck? If not It was probably built soon after Steve's boat because his was so sucessful Roger replicated a few without the star spangled treatment. What year is it?

Mine is a '78 and it was never owned by Steve King. Actually, the original owner is a member on this forum. I'm still trying to find out who bought the boat from the original owner in '88 or '89

Congrats on getting the boat out on water. Your base timing and advance sound right. I assume this is is a bbc? If so, you're AC Delco plug should be an R44T

Interior / Is this even possible?
« on: July 11, 2011, 10:48:17 PM »
I replaced my fuel tank carpeting 4 months ago and the carpet on the passenger side tank has some spots that are melted. I posted the problem with a picture on another forum, and some members are saying that the reflection of the sun off my billet battery box is what's melting the carpet. Is this even possible? Some spots look almost as if someone took a soldering iron to the carpet. I don't have any fuel leaks that I am aware of. I was disconnecting the battery as I was thinking that I maybe had some sort of electrical short in the boat.

That thing mounted on your main bearings might be a crank scraper.

Years ago I had a Rottweiler that loved to escape the yard. She wouldn't jum though, she would dig under the fence. I tried alot of different things to try and keep her in. I ended up getting one of those elctronic fence deals w/ a ahock collar from PetCo. Problem solved!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: HOLLEY 750 DOUBLE PUMPER
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:34:55 PM »
You should notice a difference in performance. How much depends on the cfm rating of your current carburetor. If in the future if you wish to do some upgrades to your motor, the Holley will be easier to dial in. Quadrajets are a bit more complex, and if you modify your engine and it requires more fuel the Quadrajet will be a little harder to work with. On the Holley, changing out jets, squirters, etc is a fairly simple and straight forward procedure. I can teardown my Holley, clean and reassemble to running condition in like 45 minutes.
