I'm looking for the gaskets between the manifold and snails.  I still have the upswept too.

502
I'm using the Comp Cams extreme marine 278 cam and kit in my 460.  Flat top pistons, 95cc edelbrock heads, edelbrock air gap intake and 850 holley, mallory distributor, accel super coil and  MSD 6AL box. Comp cams pro magnum roller rockers and elite pushrods.  Topped that off with a stud girdle to hold it all together.

It can pull 5100 rpms with my 23 foot Glastron Carlson Berkeley 12JE and A impeller.  I think there is still more there but I haven't pushed it.  It's still to young for that.

The speedo shows 63 mph but who knows what it really is, it was near dead on at 56 but I haven't taken my gps out since we fixed the oil pan issue.

It has a nice lope but still idles down nicely, it pulls very hard.

Did you go to compcams.com and use their cam selector soft ware?   You plug in your carb size compression, valve size etc and it pops up cam grinds and HP and torque graphs.

I have a set of long bolt manifolds on the way.  Could anyone tell me where to get snail gaskets for them?   Do you have a gasket number?

If not what type material should I get to make them?

Thank you!

The subject says it all here.  Which is better?   Hardin or Harmon long bolt marine logs
and snails?
Do you know of any web site that has log information?

What brand are the long bolts?   Hardin or Harmon?  I've never seen a set, I was told that
the ports match up correctly though.

Are there any other brands that work better than what I have now?

I'd really like to use my old upward manifolds but can't because of the tall valve covers.  They had a great tone and don't seem restrictive either.

Please let me know what else I could look for as far as a log type.

PS, could someone post a picture of the long bolt type?

Thank you,

My exits are 3" with these I'd be looking at changing the exit tips correct?

That's to rich for my blood.  Do you want to take a trade?

Right now I'm running Hardin short bolt logs and snails.   The port match up sucks, we ported them out as best we could but I hear the long bolt logs line up right.

I have a set of upward manifolds I could trade or what do you want for a set?   The short bolt logs and snails would also be available for sale or trade.

What do you guys have?

You'll probably have to get Edelbrock to issue Summit a return credit.  When we had oil pan issues Summit pretty much said, "It ain't my dog"  cause it can't be the pan.....  no refund.

When we got Milodon to step in we got the refund.  I'll be surprised if Summit stands behind it.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I would keep looking for vacuum leaks,  if you can't idle down past 1100 rpms you need to fix that first.
If it has a vacuum leak you aren't going to tune anything.   Did you try the spraying trick to find leaks?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 460 mixing water with oil???
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:15:14 PM »
My question is did you change the oil when you bought it?  Do you have anyway of telling how long that oil was in the engine if not?

You may just have to do the oil change the old fashion way, drain it in the bottom of the boat and out the boat drain plug.  Flush the bottom of the boat with a mix of water and simple green and you're good to go.

I had an edelbrock torker on my last engine for 9 years, the corrosion is no issue on it from fresh water running.

Good luck

3/8 line, Holley high output mechanical pump, no regulator.

We'll be going out tomorrow, I'll let you know how it does.

Jet Pumps / Re: Think something is wrong with my Jet

On my CV23 there is a little button that pulls out to engage a Neutral right at the throttle.   Does you boat have one???

514
The 850 didn't do much the first time out.   I just put on the 50cc pump and bolted it down.
I got about 50 rpm's more from it if that.

Back in the garage I pulled the carb to check the insides,  72's in the front with a 45 power valve and 74's in the back.  I couldn't see a number on the rear power valve.  It had the pink secondary spring, I changed that to the long yellow. (second lightest)

I put  74's in the front and 78's in the back, this is a vacuum secondary dual power valve carb by the way.   I picked up about 100 rpms.  The plugs are still pretty light.

I now have  76's in the front and 80's in the rear with a 5.5 power valve up front.

We'll see how this works Monday.   I'm impressed with the way the carb responds to the changes so far.

Do any of you have the vacuum secondary 850?   How is yours set up?   I went with the vacuum secondaries to save some fuel in cruise mode.  I've used them for about 30 years on this boat.

I was just checking out this engine damage when I noticed the Milodon oil pan.  I wonder if it was causing the same oil pressure drop mine experianced.

516
The 850 will be on the way tomorrow,  what jets do you run?  Do you think 74 in the main and 76 in the back would be ok to start?
Thank you!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: proper cam break in
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:18:06 PM »
If you prime your oil system with a drill and run the Rotella I don't think you'll have a problem.  We always primed them then fired up changing speeds between 1800-2500 rpms.  We lost 1 cam in the last
30 years or so with a wiped lobe.    I'd call that dam lucky or doing it the right way. (or both)

Changing RPM's was supposed to sling oil to different areas keeping every thing happy.  I don't know if it helped but it didn't hurt.  It's a slow RPM walk not blipping the throttle.

The cam makers want you to have as much oil supply to the cam as possible on lift off.  And rightfully so!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: high rev cut out???
« on: June 28, 2008, 02:27:27 AM »
Just wondering if you found the problem?

519
The secondaries have the yellow spring and are wide open.  I did the old finger test and there is nothing left.

I think I'll move the hoses inside the bulkhead.   There was no room on that side for
the filter is why the hoses and filter were where they are.

The spacer is the 4 hole which is what I ran on the old Torker intake, do you think I should
go to the open?

520
The carb is still stock other than the secondary spring and 50cc acc. pump.  The plugs are on the  bone white side.  The mains are 70's  I plan on putting in 74's for a trial.

I didn't want to cut the carb up because I may be selling it.

521
I believe there is more horse power left on the table with my engine.    It's tops at about 5000 RPM's right now, has seen 5200 with the wind at it's back.

I put on a 750 Holley to get it on the lake.  I think I should have gone with an 800 - 850 double pumper.  My target was 52-5300 rpms, two people on board.  The carb is a tad lean yet and a jet change in the near future.

I'm just curious what size carb  you guys are running on your 460's and at what RPM's?  My set up is:
750 Holley vac secondaries +  1 inch spacer
Edelbrock RPM air gap intake
Edelbrock RPM heads  with a stud girdle
comp cams xtreme marine cam 278
flat top pistons
mallory ignition,  + msd 6al
Hardin marine logs port matched

My boat is a 23.5 foot Glastron Carlson CV 23,  A impeller berkeley jet.

I believe it weighs around 2000 lbs. that's a number I've seen but not verified.  It's a day cruiser so it isn't a light weight.

I bought a set of jets off Jegs today, 70-80 for $14.99.  I have gaskets so maybe I'll
high tech next time.  I'll save the money for gassssss.

523
I don't know, I just hope they can figure out the problem before anyone else has to go through what I did.

That's my ultimate hope for this post.  Help someone to avoid these problems.

Engines / Engine Parts For Sale / Re: 10qt ford pan
« on: June 26, 2008, 09:01:12 PM »
The pan is the source of many an oil pressure issue around 4300+ RPM's in the 460.  The crank windage sucks the oil from the pan and the pickup sucks air.  (theory)  The bottom line is with 10 quarts of oil in the pan it looses oil pressure at or above 43-4600 RPM's  Mine dropped from 74 to about 20 lbs of oil pressure which is where I immediately backed off the throttle.

Milodon knows there is a problem and is standing behind the product.   Give them a call and see if they will buy it back from you as they did for a couple of us on the post.

Go to forum, engine mechanical and electrical, that's where the post is.  Check out the pictures and info.   There is an older post that contains the start and details about the issue.  It's probably on page 3 or 4 by now.   Read the posts, there is a lot of info there from a lot of people.

It has the same heading, I just started a new post to close it as the other one was getting sooo long.

A friend of mine works at Auto Zone,  he told me to NEVER buy an Optima battery.
They have more trouble with them than the other brands combined.  His words, JUNK

I never used one that was his word from experiance selling them.  He said they had to many (dead returns)  of nearly new batteries.
