Engine Mechanical / Electrical / High strung chevy 350 vs 455olds
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:31:07 PM »
I have a chance to put in a Built Chevy 350 in the boat. But it had a 455 olds whats the pros and cons on that? I can get this motor for $1000 or rebuild the 455 after i find some heads. What would you do?

Yes i know i will need new motor mounts and exhaust, starter but what else? Impellor maybe.

Good news i can get the boat in the water again soon. But im not sure i would be happy with the sb chevy.

So just how can i tell if they are cracked or not? I was cleaning the old gaskets off of them and i want to make sure they are good before i put them back on with the new motor. So is there a pressure test or something that you can do?

I looked but cant see chit.  I know i blew a head gasket but it had ALOT of water in the pan.

What about the flappers? if they didnt fit right would that let water in the pipe? and then the motor.

I have allready replaced them a couple times due to my WOMAN'S  jealouse x boyfriend but cant prove it.

See i fixed it ;D

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Motor trouble please help
« on: August 18, 2007, 04:30:42 PM »
The motor is 100% brand new and sat for 6 to 8 months and the pump does spin free??? :-\

Believe it or not, "humidity" will cause the crank/ rod bearings to rust if so it will lock up. Depending on what rings you have they could rust to the cylinder, did you use a light weight oil in the cylinders?  the lighter the better, my new 454 project was locked up so i filled each cylinder with tranny fluid and the next morning she was loose as a goose ;D Did it have oil in the pan? what did the oil look like? How /where was it stored?

 Just a thought, Good luck.

You know sav (and Paul), I'm new to all of this, but I think if the Olds is done properly it's a good motor (just need to address the oil return issue). In fact, if I had the know-how and $$, I'd like to build-up my 455 in my Kona and race it in the jet class for SCJB (I guess I should just get it running first  ;) ).

Hey wanabe im in the same boat as you my brother, My first jetboat i put in the water a total of 1 time and then sold it :o  Now im back at it but having issues. I got five kids so $$ is a issue for me to. We will get there one way or another. Would love to hang out with you and drink some beer and talk about the 455, but i guess we got to get it into the water first, and ill race ya ;D  just kidding.
