Therein lies my challenge............Most of the scareing tho was MY fault, not the boats.
They love it now! After Sunday and Mondays cruising around with it, but still want handles everywhere!

IMO the Demon carb is just like a Holley that has been worked over extensively from the factory. All the stuff Holley wants to sell you extra to hot rod your new carb is already in the Barry Grant carbs, from what I understand. All Holley parts interchange, with the possible exception of baseplates and bodies, again, from what I understand. Someone will chime in with more experience than I though.
On my engine, I know it's trying to turn itself inside out from the 750 that's on it at about 4500 rpm. That will be fixed with a second 750 on a tunnel though. I was told by the guy who bench run and broke in the cam on my engine that I needed to use a 950, MINUMUM, and he recommended a 1050 Dominator. (He also claims all 460's should use an 850DP, if performance parts are used like cam, intake, etc.) But I have extensively ported heads, 11:1 compression and a rather radical solid lifter cam too.
I just don't know that 750 is enough for OPTIMUM performance. Mine runs out just fine with the 750. Just could be better, and I want that BETTER part. So if you're after a 4500 - 5000 rpm cruiser, more than ok on the 750 I would think.

OK, OK, Theres more in the Family Event at Lake Mead thread, thanks to Chromey and Crewcheif, but here she is in the garage. Shoulda took some outside. I'll try and do that tomorrow for you guys. Also plan to post the pics once the wiring is cleaned up and the tunnel is installed. Tried the Bimini today, dun like it. Gonna save it for the Yellow Submarine I think. Just doesn't go with this boat, and I don't imagine it will stay on this thing very long at speed anyway. The intake combo on it now will go on the other one, with an 850, once I get that far.
Haven't even cleaned it up since Mead!

Well, now that the Moooo project has been, for the most part, completed, I decided to start out today by moving some vehicles around. Gooing to start on the 76 Saguaro this upcoming week. This one already has a name, "Cindy's Yellow Submarine". I figure it's safe to call it that since I already nearly sank the Moooo boat. No bad Karma there.
Got the Banana out of the back yard and into the garage so I could pull the remains of the engine, only broke 1 mirror on my truck doing so, put the original Mooo engine on a stand and immediately saw something NOT good with it.
I think I already know there's a rod (#1 or #5) slapping around and around in there. Not so good. Hopefully the crank, cam (A comp Cams 292 I was told) and block are salvageable.
The boat itself hasn't changed much, but I'm going to need someone smarter than me look at the stringers to see if they are wick'd or not. I suspect they are because of the 'notch' someone cut into one of them for oil filter clearance. Will be a good experience changing them, but maybe put in full stringers? we'll see. Might seem more trouble than worth, but it's what got me into all this, seems a good hull all around, and I already have a good majority of the parts I'll need for it.
Here's what the inside looks like before I clean it up and see what else I can see.
Here's what My neighbors get to look forward to looking at for the next few weeks.
Lots of 'glass and paint work on this one! Let alone the tanks, I think they're going away or will be moved further back on the boat.
On top of all that, the trailer needs serious work. really should just come up with a tandem for it, but I think it might be easier to
rebuild this one than to refit another trailer to this boat.
Going to get the pump completely out( Half unbolted a couple of months ago), and get ready to ship it with the place diverter for it to Tommy, maybe dissasemble the engine tomorrow night after I get home from work.
Then search the postings for all you guys who built rollaround racks to put the hull on. Those are COOL!.
For tonight? try and get my garage FINALLY clean! Taking out a lot of my wife's stuff to donate, plus clean the mess I made slamming the Mooo together. The moo may be relenquished to outside for awhile when I find a good cover for it.

I removed the electric assembly, the linkages, the butterfly and the shaft. Pretty much the whole dam thing. 'll post pics later when I get back and start dissassembling the other one this afternoon, maybe, unless we're having too much fun with it out there this morning.

Pretty much what I was thinking, Glen. And you're one of the one's I did not mention, sorry. Gotta thank 2SAv for the 'Choke, what's a Choke?' tip too. Saved my ass right there!
Gotta tell you though, first couple times I rolled out of the marina with the thing, and bear in mind I've never driven these things before, as Crewcheif and Mrs. Crewcheif can attest first hand, I rolled into the throttle pretty easy only to have the bow stick up in my face for awhile until she decided to come up on plane. Kinda scarey not seeing in front of you. Learned to whack the throttle about 3/4 and the thing would launch out of the water and be right on plane, albeit around 30 or so MPH,(more than that according to my son who was incharge of the GPS) in less than a second it seemed.
Biggest problem I had was the carb hesitating allowing me to do that, but the power was there, none the less.

Alright. Been awhile now detoxing from the trip!
The Lake Mead test worked out well, given some near major catastrophes, we got back, boat ran well, considering the carb was untouched and nearly new, and we never did use Crewcheifs timing light on it. Now I'm getting her ready for a run in the morning at Saguaro with my uncle, a real Holley guy, to see if we can get the timiong down, and just to get some more run time on it. Everything looks good, all evidence of the Mead Milkshake is gone (Changed the oil again after we got home, lord at $125 a case this Joe Gibbs stuff is getting EXPENSIVE, cost more than any single part I put on the thing so far, but worth it in the end). Retightened the oil pan, where I beleive the water came from, from nearly flooding the thing to the bottom of the lake, cleaned out the bilge (and the beer cans). Tomorrow afternoon gonna pull the corks on the block and start the install of this
The 750 is the twin to the one on the boat now that I ran at Mead. I figure get my uncle loose on that one, then switch them and do the same for the second, should get me close to running them together. At least in theory.... More likely is retuning over and over again to get them right. 2 Vac secondary 750's on this thing is WAY over carbing the engine from the standard formula, but given what peformance I saw at Mead, I think it will be just about right on THIS engine. Besides, It's what I have in the garage.
Finish that, Maybe an electric fuel pump system and adding in the oil cooler/remote filter dealio, and get the engine cover upholstered by my overworked and overbooked contact, I think this boat is as far as I want to take it right now. Will follow up with pics on them as they happen. Then it's onto the Yellow Submarine. I promise, more pics of every aspect of THAT build, which my PLAN is to be much milder than this thing turned out to be. (What a surprise THAT was to see this thing come out of the gate like that, need to find out what's in this pump!) Then again, any boat painted like this one had BETTER run or go home and graze.

« on: March 16, 2009, 03:29:56 PM » What a fun trip. Near disaster a couple of times. We just got back in and unloaded. pics uploading now. Didn't get any of the near sinking of the Udder one, nor me nearly running over crewcheifs boat. Newbies (I apologize for that!, wasn't intentional rookie mistake, quick thinking on the part of Mrs Crewcheif on the starter and throttle tho).We first got there friday and dropped in the boat, Nordie was having header problems, and so I just tooled around the marina a bit before dark. Pulled out and we all took pics and BSed, was great. Took off the next morning and once out of the marina, immediately knew I had a hot rod on my hands. Scared the living death out of my kids, didn't help that a water line from the outlet came off the header T and nearly sank the boat. (No joke, it was DEEP, much deeper than Josh's issue!), barely made it to a rocky outcropping to shut it down and find the problem. I forgot to tighten 1 hose clamp
. Oh well, coulda been worse. Blued the crap out of brand new headers tho. And did worse to them, (Will post pics later I took before we left Temple bar today.)I thnk Chromey and Mrs Crewcheif took the bulk of the pics. I left the kids in charge, and that took convinceing to get them back in the boat with me, so not many on my part
Then we noticed the water outlet cover leaking, but not much, just enough to fill up the little pocket where the dipstick goes and milkshake the oil. Ran it a little more, then my daughter had to pee, so went back to the marina and it was getting worse. Needed to change out the Break-in oil anyway, had been about an hour and a half of run time, so due anyway. The Boat shop there had it's second SCJB customer in pumping out the oil, and the guys made me a free gasket for the outlet that I put on while they changed out the oil and put in the Hot Rod oil. Took then a good hour to find a filter to fit, but everyone at that marina was fantastic!.
Went back around the motel to find Nordie working on his bilge pump, then I took my son and dropped in and hot rodded around a bit. (Not nearly as hard as I hit it the first time). I think I may have a contender. Crewcheif brought his timing light, and I never felt the need to use it, boat ran fine at 10 degrees initial timing I set it at. I did move it by eyeball about 2 degrees more later on Sunday, but ran fine, other than some minor carb tuning issues. she's ready to go!
Then the headers start leaking. Wasn't much, and I ran it all day Sunday that way anyhow. I figured I cracked them, but then I took pics this morning and see that I actually burned holes in the bottoms of the tubes before the water injection bungs on all eight of them. Perplexing, but could well be running WAYYYY to rich. On go my older, and a tad rusty, bassett's with baffles and someone to look at the carb. We'll weld up the Rewarders and maybe have them rechromed.
Thanks everyone. You helped me build it, and helped me get used to it! My kids ran with me in it this morning before we left, IT WAS COLD at 8 am!
Now to get it fully ready to ante up to my bet about the bull horns! I'll let the victim explain that!
