I am originally from Youngstown, Ohio. There was an incident that was all over the news there quite a few years ago.

Seems the same guy kept robbing this 7-11, and many others. One owner was closing one night and this guy robbed him at gunpoint. The owner pulled his loaded .357 from under his counter and the robber fled. Here's where it gets interesting.

The owner ran out trying to stop the guy so he could be arrested, the guy turned and shot at him while running down the street. The owner returned fire and killed him. The fatal  shot was fired from a 2" barrelled .357 at something close to 45 yards.

The Felon hit the street and his gun broke to pieces on the sidewalk. A Charter Arms piece of crap, the Yugo of handguns.

The guy ends up indicted by the Grand Jury (Go Figure, In Youngstown, but he wasn't italian, he was Middle Eastern). They had powder residue on the theif's hands and clothes, PROVING the felon had fired a gun, yet the cops, in their "Investigation", said the gun they found at the scene could not have been fired, as it was all busted up. The gun even had two spent rounds in it's chambers.

Took the poor 7-11 owner 3 years to get that all done and over with. And at what cost in attorneys and filing fees? Dunno if he ever sued the Youngstown PD, but shoulda.

IMHO, the guy should get a medal for being able to place a fatal shot on a habitual felon at some 45 yards away, under stress, running, with a 2" revolver no matter what caliber. I challenge ANYONE in the Law Enforcement or Military communities to match that.

I beleive, and I agree with GT on this, the feeling of building it yourself is priceless. 'Tis why when the Saguaro is done, the Rebel will probably be given to my brother, in all likelyhood. (If he can STAND the heifer paint job)

Show me one guy on here who can get more than they have in their boats and I will volunteer to kiss their a** at high noon in the middle of the intersection of 7th and Washington.

Unless you're trying to get a couple extra hundredths quicker in the quarter in some competition, not worth worrying about. Carb jetting, timing, they're all compromises anyway. But FWIW, back in the good 'ole drag racing days, we would use 1 step up in jet size and sometimes even overfloat the bowls a bit in Holleys on cold days and the air was denser.  At extreme altitude changes we would even go 2-3 steps up/down in jet sizes and do the same thing. This was worth about 1/2 a tenth in the quarter in a car at best. Rarely had to mess with the timing.

In a boat, given not only the air pressure changes at altitude or temperature, and air density changes, IMHO I think it evens out. The water is also more dense the colder it is and at altitude. The jet (Or prop, DID I SAY THAT??), is gonna gain more thrust from denser water also, therein the wash.

IN a nutshell, I agree with GT, not gonna get much from tuning. Boats, from a physics standpoint, are quite a bit different than cars, where the thrust is traction. That can be fixed with burnouts and tire composition. Not so easy with boats.

To make a long story short, which is already too late, if it runs great, leave it alone.

Just thought it was time to END this thread.

Guys, and All of you, I thank you.  I adore each and every one of you. Don't take this the wrong way.

I will post pics of these boats in other threads (when I figure out how again) because it just occurred to me that every time I reference them it comes back here. And I appreciate all the emails and condolences I got from many of you. I am someone you do not even know, and you did that. For that, I feel closer to you than family.

I am at a point where it doesn't matter any more, what happened, well, it is what it is . What matters are my kids, and now these boats, and yes you guys. Tremendous diversions they  and you, are.

I post and chat, and even converse on cell with some of you, and let me tell you, there is no better group on earth, but I realized that the more I revisited the more I want to somewhat forget. I have no problem with ANY of you I have been in contact with. You have ALL been supportive, and even congratulary with my accomplishments. For that I thank you.

My wife died, according to autopsy and death certificates, of " Hypertensive cardiovascular disease" at 38. Natural causes, but my argument nothing natural with that at 38, but who am I. I share this information with you as friends. I guess you never know when your number is up. All I know is I found her dead.

But then I send someone here to see what I'm doing, and I sent a Newbie here to see my boats, for that that I gotta leave this alone. I have for my part, left it alone and haven't been in this thread for a short time. Then someone wants to see my boats and I send them here.

I'm done feeling sorry for myself, have been for some time, and now we're getting it on.

PLease let this be the last thread for this. I'll repost with the Saguaro and Rebel rebuilds in diff posts.

Heres the deal with the degree wheel, need the spec sheet for the cam, should be able to d/l if you ain't got. Attach the degree wheel to the crank, no balancer. Get the dial indicator set up on the number 1 intake rocker right at the pushrod. Use a screwdriver or whatever and watch the dial indicator until you know for sure your are at TDC on #1 cylinder on compression stroke. Then, as GT told you, mark THAT POINT, use a coat hanger mounted off a block bolt or whatever, then bend it around so it points to zero or a point you can reference. You COULD move the degree whell, but only if math is a problem.

As you rotate the engine, watch the dial indicator. when it reaches full lift, on the intake stroke, rotate back and forth and look at when the dial indicator is highest, note that number, then look at the degree wheel. Should be within, and GT will chime in I'm sure, what the cam specs say are acceptable. You can get further by lookingh at .050 lift, but full lift tells you if your even close to time.

Do the same with the exhaust rocker on #1 cylinder. Then split the results between the two and that's your timing target.
