Did a double check tonight and the holes line up, including the relief. I will consider the PTO for the disconnect though.  Thanks Ray.

Is that a 460 Frank? I know I sent you one driveline, but I have a couple others that use and have the PTO if you need...........Just text, PM or call me.........Got one for a BBC too, gotta dig for it.......HARD.......if I still have it.......give way too much crap away....... :screwy:

Is it making noises or anything? What's the plugs look like?

I agree with the boys, bent stuck valve, maybe a hole in a piston...........maybe even worse with maybe serious bottom end damage. Should be apparent when the head is pulled. My suspicion is because of #7 having no compression at all and the pushrod trouble and #3 10 PSI above the median. Same throw on the crank.......... :sly:

I think it needs to be carefully completely torn down and see just what is up there, and why, myself..............before any more damage is incurred..........  :-\

So I was told recently that even if the pattern of the driveline matches that of my crank, I still need to run a PTO. Is this right? I thought they were used as an adapter when the patterns did not match.

No you don't.  bolt it directly to the crank over the flexplate using the same allen bolts that would normally hold the PTo Adaptor. Here are pics of 2 different 1310 drivelines, one using a PTO adaptor and one that dont use one. Funny, both came from the same boat..........my twin jet......... :screwy:  ,......Funny thing is, the slight difference in length makes then exactly the same with the PTO adaptor on the one.

If it's a Ford though, carefully line everything up, there's one offset hole on a 429/460 crank.........gets me in trouble every time.

Ray

EDIT:: Frank, using one WITH a PTO adaptor gives you the advantage of being able to disconnect the driveline fairly easily to run the boat on the hose. You'd sooner stick your privates in a beehive than get the direct hookup off to do the same, if at all.........just an FYI............

This thread was timely. Yesterday woulda been pops birthday. He was in the Navy and woulda loved a show like that!

Heres the link to the history of his ship. Short of getting drunk in every port of call in the Carribean (My dad's words, not mine, lol), they were involved in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Actually shot down 3 MIG's according to pop, although officially there were no engagements. The boat was the first armed to fire what has now become the Tomahawk missile.

If the hose is clamped at the inlet side leading to the engine from the pump, I'm having a hard time beleiving it'd blow the hose off, first of all!  :screwy:

What pump is this? Sounds to me that it's probably a Jacuzzi YJ or a Golden Eagle. Gotta be something seriously plugging the bowl or wedged in the nozzle. plastic shopping bags, something......have you pulled the hand hole cover, and new gasket BTW, that you say was spurting water?

No way should that kind of pressure be coming out that 1/2" pipe tapped into the bowl for engine cooling. FIX the problem, don't band-aid the result........

I'm a fan of pressure releif, since we run much hotter engines, cams these days, and build our pumps to much higher standards than they did in the 70's and 80's, but still, there is NO WAY that pump should even be capable of throwing that kind of pressure through that tube unless something is seriously wrong in the bowl or nozzle area.

Just my .02

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / Re: gel coat preservation
« on: July 24, 2011, 03:42:58 PM »
Same principles apply to boat care.  You get a polished finish and then need to cover it with a wax.  Most of the "one product" polishes contain a little wax to protect it from sun and the elements.  Most sprays for removing water spots have the same.

Go pick up some carnuba and apply it.  Then once hazed rub it off.  Then from time to time reapply it to protect it.

Pretty much it. I use Mother's Carnuba wax, worked outstanding on Pickle after wet sanding it down and hitting it with rubbing compound. In that state though, we hit it with 3 coats and used a buffer. Hazed up a bit after the BR trip, and felt gritty, so I've hit it again 2 more times. I dunno of the freshly cut gel is absorbing the stuff or what.  :screwy:

They're D3VE heads. I have several sets here, but kinda far. Hit Ralph up and if he can get you one, or anyone else in or near Pasadena, I'll replace it with one of mine.  ;)

I still feel horrible about it. That engine showed NO SIGNS that the heads even needed to come off for a look see.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: leaking gas tanks
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:39:19 AM »
what he basically means is that you use a strip of glass mat.  and lay it out so theres an overlap onto the new piece and what you're trying to stick it to.

for example:

theres like 4" on the stringer part, and 4" on the floor.  both sides.

Exactly how I was reading it as well. Glass in the wood mounts, then simply mount or secure the tanks to those. Haven't done it.......yet, going to happen here quick, but I plan on three layers glassing the wood mounting points in. cloth, then mat, then cloth again.  spreading out a little further each layer.

Reason being, say an 11 gallon tank holds 72 lbs of fuel, plus the tank. A Half or partially full tank, sloshing around, can emit quite a bit more force than that, so I am working on a side load capability of 150 lbs or more.

You're on the right track! You cannot over secure them.

It was ralph's idea.  I formed plan B after realizing I had 6 coils....that's too many knots

Why the hell would you listen to Ralph?? On a whacker, you KNOW he's gonna set you up!  :screwy:

That's just too funny............Ski tow made of coil wires...........

On the relay, I'm not entirely sure I would use one in this case. Maybe off the keyswitch (had many of those fail, Pickle was the most recent victim, DAMN those things are made cheap), but I'd be wiring a direct one off the lanyard kill, or at the very least to a separate relay. In which case, ignore the 10 guage wire. There is NO OTHER WAY to shut the byatch down without it, so just think the thought through and be safe!

They sent me the wrong one....and I had a drawer full of relays.   I like relays...they're fun.

I don't have the factory hand Throttle, so no pre-wired kill switch.   I thought about tying a rope around my wrist and the other end to the coil wire, but figured the tech guys at the race would frown on that.

LMAO! Would work just as effectively though!

Yeah, I know. Talked to the guy and found out it was only 16' long and I'm not that far from outweighing it to realize, NOPE!

Hulls / Re: transom
« on: July 20, 2011, 04:05:20 PM »
I had the top screws that hold one of my swim step brackets pull out of the transom.  Other than drilling all the way thru, what would be the best way to fix this ?  Would filling it with some epoxy resin paste and redrilling work ?

I just had one of the locals here show me something I had never thought of on the same exact thing!

He had his boat over for me to lift the engine so he could get the oil filter off and change the oil ( I know, long story.......but I have to install a remote for this guy now).

ANYWAY, his did the same thing, and he was so proud of hisself he had to show me what he did. He went to Lowes or Home Depot and got those, well, I call them Ikea inserts, that you get with their furniture. You know the ones that thread into the particle board with an allen wrench and then you can screw a machine screw into them? I didn't know they made them bigger than 1/4-20. Apparently they do. So he drilled out the hole a little bigger, not clear through the transom to the size he needed, cut them off to the proper length, dipped those little gems in epoxy resin and threaded them into the transom, then a bolt with loctite on it through the swimstep bracket into the insert. Viola! fixed! I was pretty impressed!

I read somewhere that a mag is about 4 amps, so 14 guage should be fine. Remember though, if you're grounding other stuff through the same wire, add the amperages together and use a large enough wire size to take it all.
I'm just about to go out and make my setup shut off with the key. I'll use a relay wired so power off grounds the mag. I'll probably leave the kill switch functional too.
Ralph

I'd probably run a 10 guage minimum. Just me, but all that bangin' around it'll do in the gunwales over the years, heat, since we mainly run these things when it's HOT out... :screwy:......

Just my .02, Do it once. That is something that when you flip the switch to shut it down, theres a chance it could be in a hurry for a very scarey reason and the time for it to fail would be right then! Murphy's Law! (Murphy was obviously a jet boater, in case you guys didn't know)  ;)
