and then i moved my focus onto the boat itself

I did some "final sanding" and mxed up some of my "good" primer. Decided to shoot the half of the boat i felt was prepped





and went to lunch

Yes im using White primer (the boat will be mostly orange and i want the color to pop)

so i went to lunch and came home. It had been atleast 3 hours since i sprayed it so i decided to start wetsanding... Well bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started to wetsand and come to findout either the cheapo rustoleum primer or Bulldog adhesion promoter did not play welll with my PCL primer.

I started block sanding and everything was good. Untill i started on the side and found a soft spot. The paper literally ripped off of the block. After investigation it appears that the primer did not dry or appear to anywhere i sprayed the bulldog (i ran out)

here are some pics, and some of me removing the primer i sprayed today. Back to ground zero!

And after i got tired of changing DA disks every 35 seconds i turned to Aircraft Remover. Here are the results

Your first coat of primer needs to be either acrylic urethane or polyester. You could use an epoxy, but I have had adhesion issues with it before. It needs to cure/shrink for about a week before you can really do anything with it.

Only then can you use a filler/builder primer surfacer.

Be really careful with the stripper, it needs to be totally washed of with Dawn before you can recoat with anything, the solvents actually permeate into the pores.

Yeah. The primer I am using is polyester. I think it was an issue of either the bulldog and poly primer or poly primer on the rustoleum primer

You  can't spray poly over anything else without being sealed, also it has to completely cure before anything else is sprayed on it.

Try to stick to the same family if finishes of at all possible. The topcoats will tell you what they can be applied to Rustoleum in my experience does nit play well with most others...

So i have a fair amount of expirence. However i learned my lesson going cheapo with the rustoleum... wont do that again

not a whole lot of progress. As you can tell the boat is outside. And its usually dark by the time i get home. Plus a little cold for paint and filler

Tonight i got home a little early and decided to try my hand at doing some filling. Ive been reading about blueprinting the bottom and im going to attempt my best.

So got my level out (closest thing i have to a straightedge) its 4 ft long and i masked off an area approx 5 feet (couldnt find the damn tape measure.

After sitting the level on the third "level" i tried to make a map and give myself an idea of where i needed to put what.

Here you can see what i masked off and the area i plan to "blueprint"



I threw some filler on (well all that i mixed up) and let it cure


Then went at it with some 40 grit and my long board (about 16 inches). After about 20 minutes of sanding and cleaning it up with some 80 then 180 grit. this is my end result


My question to you all is If you look at the above picture you can see the "two" concentrations of Filler. The filler on the right is a definent low spot. I need to add some more.
Now the areas where i sanded through the filler still show as low with my straight edge. albeit about 1/16 inch so im not to worried. But does it look like im heading in the right direction? I suck at body work lol

Your doing a great job! Make sure the strakes are nice an straight. Make it so it's level and no low spots. FYI you mite end up with a nasty low end porpous if you don't do it just right. Should be fine though. Keep up the great work.

exactly how flat do i have to make it? Should i worry about stuff that is 1/8" or bigger or 1/4" or

if I can see light or a gap under the straight edge I'll keep filling.

i urge you to take a walk down holorinhal's kona resto thread.  he goes through all the steps on the top as well as blueprinting the bottom, filling, etc on the bottom of the hull.  the result was absolutely phenomenal but unfortunately it was totaled before he had a time to enjoy it.

I've read his thread, and also the one he references (blueprinting 101) and this is where i got my idea. I just am not the best at body work so wanted some opinions lol. The 101 thread advises to not worry about the stuff thats 1/16 or smaller. Primer will fill that in.

The biggest item to keep in mind is rigidity.  All the blocking in the world would be a waste of time if it is as soft as dried fruit turd.

Also, I highly recommend a long block for sanding.  Cris-cross your lines too.

the hull is solid, there are two areas i had to make a minor repair and i used glass mat and resin.

For the filler, the areas that will need more than 1/8 inch worth im using duraglass. The rest just regular body filler.

Im using about a 16" long block
