Title: 1972 Tahiti in Hawaii
Post by: kohensdad on January 29, 2009, 01:13:16 AM
So its been a couple days since I finally got off my ass and started this rebuild.  And I finally found my adaptor to get the damn pics off of my camera.  Sorry, lost the pics of day 1 and yanking the 455.  Tore it down and sent it out to the machine shop to have the heads and block cleaned and freshened up.  Yanked the Mondello oil restrictors and put in a set from Olds Perfomance Products and had the oil returns in the heads drilled out bigger.  No more oiling problems.  The heads also got a valve job, new seals, new rocker arm studs, and resurfaced.  The block got new pistons and rings, new cam bearings, new rod bearings, and new main bearings.  Hopefully this 455 turns out pretty reliable.  I know it wont be the fastest thing in the world, but wtf...its an Olds.  Maybe when the pocketbook and wife allows me....an alky 454 can make its way in ;)

Day 2 boat stripped

Thought I had bought a boat with a pretty solid hull :screwy:  Once all the interior and carpet was pulled out I found a couple of spots that got me banging my head on the wall....FUKKN rot! :banghead:

In the bow...
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa291%2Fsinnersdelite%2Fbowrot.jpg&hash=ece1072c39cff7fa2948cfc26b1e0f54f0b392f9)
and on the transom...

Chit!  More glass work that I didn't wanna do!

Then when I pulled off the rub rail, I really got to see how crappy the cap was on.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa291%2Fsinnersdelite%2Fgap.jpg&hash=cb80c083e0f8202e8925552bc27152c7e68c16a4)
Probably why the bow is all fkn rotted out :banghead:

Day 3 I started patching everything.  Mixed up a batch of Aerocil (filler) and went to town....
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa291%2Fsinnersdelite%2Ffilled1.jpg&hash=785394e15aa34ff42599c3eb0fbf057546d41863)

Let the filler go off then coated with a layer of sanding resin.  Cut out the rot from the transom and bow.  After that ordeal I called it quits for the night and let the sanding resin sit till today.

Today, Day 4 broke out the DA and some 180 grit and started banging away.  Got all the edges smoothed out then went back with a 60 grit sponge to roughen it up again.  Layed down a coat of laminating resin and began taping the edges to re-cap everything.  Forgot to take some pics...so I'll get some tomorrow when I finish up the capping.

Trying to decide on a color scheme....what do you guys think of white on white?

Cool beginning of a thread.  Good luck and we're here to help (with what we can).

For what it's worth, I think I would grind back on the seam a bit further and lay some glass in there first before the filler.  I don't want you to go to all that hard work now and then have a crack show up after you layed your paint on it.

Best of luck and keep at it.  It's gonna be an awesome boat....just takes patience.........john

Thanks John!  I actually mixed some chopped fibers into the filler and I'm in the process now of wrapping glass over the filler to tie in the cap and the hull.  I'll get some pics up today, but what do ya think?  Will there be any issues there?

By the way...I used to live up in your neck of the woods for about 7 bone chilling years!  Actually the three months of summer were beautiful, just the rest of the year kinda made me wanna shoot myself ;D  Wish I had found jetboats when I still lived up there, I'd probably still be there :banghead:

Thanks 78Cole!  Currently I'm back home on the Eastside of Oahu....Kaneohe.  Ever been my way?

I will Tom and don't worry, I'll be buggin you a lot when it comes time to tear down my pump ;D

Let me be the first to admit that I genuinely don't know what I'm doing!!!  Prior to starting my cap job I pinged and talked to many people that were doing this and pretty much universally they all recommended grinding back and then using multiple layers of glass starting very thin (one VERY highly respected boat painter suggested starting with a fiberglass rope like material that they use for insulation purposes) and then with the following layers going with wider strips.

This is what I did (though I didnt use the rope) and so far I've been very happy.  Your method might work as well but I just don't have enough experiance to say for sure. Maybe somebody else here can jump in.  My fear is founded on a couple of really nice boats that have had cracks show up after a expensive paint job and they've found out that all that was used was some filler with glass strands in it.  I'd really hate to see that happen to you.  Of course, with that said, just watch me go out to the shop and see a crack but so far (knock on wood) it has held up with being trailered on some brutal roads and running in some awful rough water (not to mention some semi necked ladys on the deck) so I'm happy.

I would be more than happy to talk to you by phone and will PM my phone number if you'd like.

FYI, I used to live in Lualualei and Wahiawa back in the 60's (yah, I'm old).........take care..........john

They are right.  Grind down thru the gel coat to the glass layer wider than your anticipated work area.  Clean with acetone.  USE MAT, NOT CLOTH, Start with a 1" wd strip, wet it out, wet the work area, lay it across seam, roll or brush out any bubbles, feather the edges into the adjacent surfaces, let it cure.  Do it again with 1/2" wider strips up to 3", over lapping the end of the previous strip by an inch or two.   You could do all layers in one day, just pre-cut the strips, and lay-up one entire layer around the boat.  Then the next layer as soon as the first has kicked.  Remember to use general purpose laminating resin...Remember also that the higher the humidity, the FASTER its going to kick, so catalize with that in mind.

a little verbose, but hope it helps

BINGO,  thats good advice P-jet.  More work but I really think it's worth it in the end when you feel good that it's not gonna break apart without something really working it over.

I'd like to suggest a strip added to the inside of the seam if you can as well.  Some boats are really accessable and some are tough.

Basically I sanded about 4-5 inches above and below the cap seam.  Then I wet the area with a layer of laminating resin and layed down 6oz 3-4 inches above and below the seam.  Tomorrow I'm gonna brush on a few more layers of resin then a layer of sanding resin before sanding it down and feathering in the edges.  I know you guys said to do a few layers, going wider each time, but I didnt read that till I got in just now....plus, I'm lazy :sly:  LoL!   But that advice is good to know....I'll do it on the next boat ;D

Hey kohensdad, your into that thing balls deep already  8)

Your FG cloth looks "dry", done properly and with enough resin, the cloth should virtually disapear, I would try soaking it in resin to absorb as much as possible...just my .02

I agree with PJ on the matt instead of cloth, there are two reasons for me. 1. the matt is not directionally sensitive, and 2. cloth tends to be weaker and prone to cracking, I normally use finish cloth OVR the matt, becomes invisible and bulletproof...

This things gonna be nice, sorry to hear that you found a little more than you bargained for, that's the story of my life. :banghead:

Yeah GT, I surely am balls deep into this thing already.  The cloth is a little "dry" right now, but I'm gonna layer a few more coats of resin on it tomorrow.  I guess my glass work is a little more geared towards a surfboard....got lots of time in with those things.  Next project boat will take your guys advice and use the mat instead of cloth...actually it makes more sense that way anyway!  Should have this thing ready to paint in a few days....so I'll keep updating!

As far as the extras that popped up during the strip down, I guess if I was a little more careful when I bought the boat I would have noticed those flaws, but being as this was my first jetboat....I was too fkn anxious to get this thing back home :banghead:

Hahaha!  Yeah, we live cuuntree!  Nah...its a good balance here, nice country living on this part of the island, but city life is just a 20 min drive away!  Can't really complain except for the fact that I live on a rock in the middle of a huge ocean.  You can only go around the island so many times before you wanna jump off!  A lot of times I envy you guys livin on the mainland....soooo much chit to do and see!

GT is right, the picture shows the cloth is white (dry)...I saturate my cloth or mat on a piece of cardboard before i put it on the work area...I see that there is still metal flake under the cloth...that means that you did not grind down to the glass layer, and there will be no "mechanical" bond to the glass you are putting down...kinda like painting on an unprepared surface...it gonna come off.  Fiberglassing is a very technical process to do it right.  I love your enthusiasm, and I hate to say it, but jobs like this are best left to an experienced shop.  If you don't know how to glass, you will NEVER get the results you are looking for...take it from someone who learned the hard way.

Sorry, I think my pics are a little confusing.  Yes, when I first lay my cloth down it is dry.  The pictures under the first one with the cloth showing is what the end result is, well, not completely done there are a few more layers of resin to be "brushed" on.  I guess we've got some different styles of glassing.  This is how we've come to learn how to glass....like a surfboard.  Not saying it is necessarily the correct way for this application, but its been a tried and true method for us (knock on wood).  I see what you are saying and it does make a lot of sense, and I will probably put your advice to work on the next boat we work on.

So basically this is the starting point....cloth layed down over a layer of laminating resin
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa291%2Fsinnersdelite%2Fcloth.jpg&hash=04ce7654b38f1bd0b2ee90ead8726521aeefd397)

And this is where it ends up after a coat of laminating resin is applied with a squeegee and brush.....
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi13.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa291%2Fsinnersdelite%2Fglass2.jpg&hash=492c1ac94b82805983208efc218c998856310ae1)
....After this a few more hot coats will be applied, topped off with a coat of sanding resin.

I hope this doesn't sound like I don't want to listen to your guys advice, because I am ;D  Its just that at this point I really don't want to sand all that shit down again :banghead:  This isnt the first boat we've built....and sanding and resin and sanding and fiberglass and sanding and a whole lot of cussing....blah.  But don't get me wrong....I am excited about this project because its our first JETBOAT ;D

Anyone needs help with Glass work heres some resources , John Miller www.johnmillerboats.com, Super nice guy very knowlegeable , Doug @ www.Sherfab.com , they sell supplies but are knowledgeable and very helpful too, and the latest resourse is   http://www.fiberlay.com.  This is not rocket science but is time consuming tedious messy work , can be done right and learned readily with the right materials and help from the folks above. I learned what  I know from Coulter Board Co , (I started building surfboards to sell the the rental joint in Avila beach in the 60's )  and from the resorces like the folks above as well as Failsafe fiberglass here locally etc Tom

I like that side of the island. We did a cabinet job for a haole (sp) in Kailua. It was terrible, had to make like 3 trips over there, bed and breakfast, rental car, airfare, all paid by the clients. Man I could use a job like that now.
Oh ya, and the boats looking good. If you have any problems with the seem cracking, just put some moulding back on it. No big deal, Bra

Didn't catch jack....but a day on the ocean is better than being at work!

BTW, my buddy that's helping me with my Tahiti is also the same guy that built this boat...I can attest that we're using the same glassing techniques on the Tahiti as he did on this Yellowfin.  The Yellowfin takes a POUNDING when we go out and it has been solid as a rock!  So I've got hope for the Tahiti.

We launch out of Kaneohe Bay (Heeia Kea Pier).  Trolled upsea to the MM buoy about 20 miles out.  Jigged out at the buoy for a while, then trolled back in.  There were quite a bit of bird piles out there, just no action.  Had one biter on the way back in, from what we seen it was a small marlin.  But I think it was just playing with the lure and never really had an intention of taking a full bite.  Oh well, we were only out for about 5 hours anyhow and never really had anytime to really go hunting.  So what kind of diving did you do out here?  Any bluewater?

I like that side of the island. We did a cabinet job for a haole (sp) in Kailua. It was terrible, had to make like 3 trips over there, bed and breakfast, rental car, airfare, all paid by the clients. Man I could use a job like that now.
Oh ya, and the boats looking good. If you have any problems with the seem cracking, just put some moulding back on it. No big deal, Bra
 Hapo Haole  Ron

Hey Ron, I was keeping an eye on your project as you went through it and I love your boat man!  I mean, that was a lot of motivation for me to get this boat going.  One question...how much did you pay to have your interior wrapped?  I've been pondering over what the hell to do with my interior and I'm gonna build new seats, but just don't know what color and style to wrap them.  I'm also debating on crating the seats up when I'm done framing them up and sending them up there to get foamed and wrapped.  Any suggestions in this department on who would be a good shop to send them too.  Good, and cheap.  Not to sound like I'm sterotyping or anything, but the little family run mexican shops gotta be pretty good  and have decent prices huh?

The guy I used is resonable. My interior, including the ghetto fender pads and steps were 1600.00. As you know from the post, I built and resined everything. He did have to sew all the tuck and roll. That was alot of labor, probably could have saved a few hundred bucks right there. Had another price for 2200.00 w/o the pads and steps. If you decide to send it over, let me know i'll help any way that I can.  Ron

Thanks Ron!  $1600 is very good...can you believe that one guy I went to down here wanted to charge $5K!!!???  Crazy speak I tell you.

I thought you locals took care of each other and saved those kind of prices for the mainlanders. Maybe you just need to trade him a backpack full of Maui Wowie.

sorry...had a lag for a couple days didnt really have any time to work on the boat.  but got some progress done today, not too much, but its a pretty big chunk off my shoulders.  cut out ALL the rot, made my templates, cut my repair patches and glassed in the floor section.

couldnt glass in the transom section yet since i'm waiting for the epoxy between the wood and glass to cure. will probably have it glassed in tomorrow.  project kinda fell behind schedule this week :banghead:  wanted to have the boat ready to paint by this past weekend, but now it looks like it will be another week or two before i can get my spray guy to come in.  its alright though....now i really dont gotta RUSH.  more pics to come!

i talked to the guy on the phone today.  he said they came off his olds, couldn't use em since he goes out at Castaic(?) and got a $500 fine for noise violation.  yeah, little detail about fitting 454/455 kinda made me wonder.  he says he lives in the valley(? once again....i'm hawaiian).  was wondering if one of you lived close to that lake or his area?  i wanna buy them, but i'm kinda sketched.  i've never seen zoomies on an olds...been looking high and low.  so just wondering if this guy is legit.

Zoomies on an Olds =  Tits on a boar

I would have to ask why (and I run a 455)      Kinda seems like "All show and No Go"   But WTF do I know???
Title: Re: 1972 Tahiti in Hawaii
Post by: povertyjet on February 13, 2009, 09:18:01 PM
speaking strictly for myself, I don't think zoomies are a good choice for engines that work at the RPM ranges of boats.  My main concern is after a scream across the lake you shut the engine down. The exhaust valves are going to be hot.  Cold air entering the short pipes may warp valves by cooling them too fast.

plus as cool as they sound, I do not think they are allowed at most places.

i'll admit...it is mostly for show.  but i'm not too worried about it because the wifey already shot the idea down.  she's worried about the kids going deaf :screwy:

Good news bad news , the mldg and fill strip is cheap BUT because it goes truck freight only (12 ft sticks over limit for the Brown truck) , the shipping is a killer ! let me know what you need (over all length I'll find out ) what "truck" will make that trip to Paradise the cheapest !  ;D

Hey DJ, since you got 12v at the coil, spark, and fuel, sounds like timing might be out a little...recheck #1 cylinder @ TDC (compression) matches rotor firing #1 plug to get you in the ballpark...and since this is a new engine, for initial start and /or cam break-in, I would take the tunnel-ram stuff off and keep it a simple 4 bbl until you get it running well.

great job

Frank, thanks for chiming in here.  Okay, so I got #1 @ TDC (compression) and I reset the dizzy so rotor is firing on #1, also re-double checked wiring order.  I'll swap the tunnel ram back over to the torker manifold and 4bbl today.  Another question though...I'm using the old MSD dizzy that I bought the boat with, seems its working fine, but do I need a 6A or 6AL?  When I brought the boat home she had a 6AL but crapped out due to being exposed to all the salt.  I was trying to stay away from running another one, but will if I gotta.

Check the part number on the dizzy and look it up in msd's site.  They make one that needs a box to run and one that doesnt need a box.

I started thinking about it and it sounds like yours doesnt need a box if its sparking right now without one.  Not really sure though.  Mabye not a hot enough spark?

I had a problem with the box working intermitantly and it turned out to be a bad ground.

Fired this big bitch tonight! ;D ;D ;D  All I could think about at work today...on the way home stopped and picked up a new 6A.  I figured spark was kinda weak, more orangy rather than whitish blue.  Wired the box in and hit the switch and she fired right up on the first try!    Thanks for getting the gears turning guys, mucho appreciated!

I've heard some horror stories, but tell you the truth, I've NEVER been up there when its big like that.  When you hear about all the tourists that get swept off the beach you know it aint safe.  I think you have to be slightly retarded to go out in surf like that :o

So I ran her on the hose today just to try and get some tuning done.  Trying to set the water pressure regulator, question is...What is a good way to tune water pressure without a water pressure gauge hooked up?  How much water should I be watching to come out of the exhaust (thru-transom)?  Should it be sputtering water or should I just have a slight mist to a steam coming outta her?  Also, I was noticing that water was spraying out of those little holes on the bottom of the header...I'm assuming too much water.  I turned down the regulator until water just stopped coming out of those holes and the excess relief valve (set to 15lbs) just stopped flowing.  Right now I've got it where its just a slight mist to steam coming out the pipes?  Too little water running through the system?  I'll hook up a pressure gauge tomorrow.

hey DJ, what kind of headers are those?  Are they water injected or fed from the cooling system like logs?

Thru-transom Rewarders....water injected I'm assuming?  Sorry Frank, I'm confused...what would be the difference?  I know its a dumb question.  My plumbing does feed the headers from the cooling system though.  Here's the diagram that I followed...

Where did you get the diagram?  Someone with headers needs to give you the lowdown on plumbing them, but I Think all Rewarder TT headers are water injected.  Water to cool the headers is NOT part of the cooling system for the engine.  maybe I am confused...are there little holes on the bottom of each header pipe like this?

[attach=1]

Those are where the injectors screw in.  You need a valve to control volume of water going into the headers...a little water at idle and alot @ WOT.  Alot of guys here run a Banderlog system that does this automatically.  Be very carefull here because you can fill the engine with water.

(Attachment Link)

the little holes are right before those water injection ones, closer to the flange.  i think they are called weep holes?  but yeah, I looked up my headers and yes, they are water injected.  man, so much different than a car with all this water stuff...you'd think this was a boat or something :screwy: ;)
