Ok, Here goes, new to the site and boat ownership in general. Wife recently passed away and I had promised her a Ski boat at some point. Anyway, I thought this might be something my kids and I (11 and 13) would enjoy building and using, so I bartered some stuff for it. What it is, a 1976 Saguaro that, for all intents and purposes, is not that bad. It had a blown engine that the former owner saw fit to trash the internals for, 460 ford. All that remains are all the hookups, block, intake, headers, and Mallory Unilite. Interior musta been trashed too because it's non-existent. Cables look like something on a 45 year old lawn mower and are obviously trash.
The good news it's a Berkeley Jet, 12JC I beleive (Kindof overstamped on the ID tag, but is a one piece bowl), and the boat, short of paint and some minor fiberglass repair (Mostly cosmetic) on the bottom by the transom. I figure a good once over upside down and topside, some time with a sander and some Duraglass, it can be painted to make a decent boat.
I'm not looking to race the thing. One death in the family per year is more than enough, however, can anyone help with what I should do/ not do as far as getting the pump gone through, and is it fine to use a truck 460 with a mild rebuild and possibly a mild cam/ intake/ carb to make as reliable a ski boat as possible? Is the Saguaro even worth messing with?
In reading all the posts, it seems everyone is into place diverters and blueprinting, etc. I am not interested in making the thing as fast as it can be. Or am I wasting my time on the Saguaro? Is it a decent hull or not and how can I tell if theres major issues with that?
I am not a complete idiot, my uncle had a Sidewinder and a Biesemeyer until recently when he retired and sold them. The Biesemeyer had a Blown 454 and was just plain scarey, but I am far from comfortable with some of this. He also had his jet "Blueprinted", and seaid something to me about having the pump housing/Bouwl interface machines for a BIG o-ring, which he had had done. I dunno. Any help??
Going to try and insert pics here, but dunno if it'll work.

First off let me say that I'm sorry for your loss. That being said, the Saguaro is a great hull, Beerjet used to spin his out on a regular basis! They're a great hull for skiing, tubing etc, just don't think about circle racing it. A truck 460 would probably work great for what you've described as your wants/needs for the boat. A carb, cam and intake will definitely help you out. As far as the pump is concerned I would send it to either Cyclone Marine (Jim Brock) or Jet Boat Performance (Tom and Josh Manier) Don't underestimate a diverter, it's the best bang for the buck in a jet boat. There's lots of guys here with tons of knowledge, welcome to the zoo.

Ray, first off, welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your wife, that's rough...
As far as your boat goes, it sounds like you have a pretty good start, (lets just say nicer than anything I own), on the Berkeley, basic rebuild would more than suffice for what you're trying to do, you don't need to go "pump crazy" until your trying to break into the 70's (not the year LOL) brobably stick with an aluminum A impeller, May be a good idea o call Tom at JBP, very fair and very knowledgable, as far as a 460 Ford, a truck motor will be fine but a quality rebuild will be paramount. If you're going all the way through it, go forged pistons with a slight overhone (a good machine shop will know what to do), a Marine gasket set, brass freeze plugs and so on...If your going with a closed engine compartment all of the periferals will need to be marine rated (SAE J1171).
Otherwise you should be good to go, new cables and properly functioning controls are without saying, very important.
Would love to see pics of this beast, the Saguaro boats I have seen were all pretty nice pieces, Good luck and hope we can help!

Actually,I'm an old school engine builder from the late 70's early 80's. Rebuilding a Ford is new, as I mostly built killer Mopars back in the day. The engine I'm not concerned about, save for some reservation about Street engines vs. marine engines. Maybe they're the same, maybe not, I dunno. and the cooling and plumbing of such frightens me a little. Say this. 80% of engine wear occurs during startup and warm up. So how can a marine engine last when cool water is introduced at all times from the jet pump? Just a thought in my mind. Anyway, any help anyone can give me, and hopefully my uplinks worked the last time.

I'm kind of speachless ....... Sorry about you loss Ray .
Here is my 76 Saguaro. Esentially an early biesemeyer bottom .
I would race mine again in heart beat .
I also had 8 years of seat time in mine .
Lets see some pictures.
The Saguaro was actually built by a guy who was a ski racer from Arizona before he moved to Irwindale , next to where Hallett was building boats .
I always want to shed a tear when I think of Sheila and the good times we had . :'(

Can anyone set me straight on why I cant see what I am typin my post up. It is so darn hard to write something and have so many darn typos!
Secon. It was a very nice boat that will serve your purposes very well. I would suggest you fill out your profile so people can direct you to places that are close to home to help you out.
JoeAgain sorry for your los.
I had a Saguaro with a 455 and the boat was great.

Hey Ray, that's a sexy little delio there, nice find! You got some work coming your way!
I'm tinking you need aluminum seat frames built... ;)
-
Thanks Joe, /Cowboy.
Don't know why I can't do that, but whatever.
Ray
-
lol, yeah, seat frames and how they mount is one of the perplexing things I've been pondering since this thing arrived. Like I said, I'm going to be a moron for awhile. How do you mount seats in this thing anyway? LOL.
Ray

Ray
LOL that's funny, I feel like a moron everytime I bring a boat home too, unfortunately it never really goes away the whole time the boats there... ???
My patterns for my Carrera are being put into "CNC" terminology for production of an all aluminum interior framing, we'll see how it goes...
GT
-
LMAO you think I'm kidding, I have NO IDEA where the seats bolt into this thing. No bolt holes, nothing. Not like the 6 or 7 cars I've restored in my day. There are places for everything and holes. Somethimes we hit the wrong one, as some wives can attest, but the holes are there, non the less, making sense.
Ray
-
There are many ways to fasten your seats to your boat...all I can say is you'll start to figure it out just fasten your seatbelt and hang on....like someone told me watchout you never know what beerjet will say next

If you look through history in the different sections (engine, interior, fiberglass...), there is a lot of good information that has already been posted. If you have any questions about something in an old post, bring it up again and someone will give input.
Here is some pics of the rebuild on my upholstery http://www.socaljetboats.com/index.php?topic=1390.0

X2 there Crewchief, if you can't find what your looking for on here, there is a chance it does not pertain to boats...BTW the cool thing about your boat having no interior, you can build it anyway you want, buckets, bench, wraparound, whatever, it really makes it your own (just no milkcrates, it's been done ;))
You thinking colorchange? nothing wrong with yellow, just curious...
-
Actually, The yellow has some meaning. There was an instance where a friend of mine and I got in trouble with our wives over an inflatle teeter totter incident in my pool. Same color. Long story short, the yellow fits. Besides, how many bannana yellow boats do you see?
Ray
-
Oh, Brings up another question. Haven't started tearing the jet down, is it cast Iron or aluminum? or a combo? wanted to know, know a guy who does anodizing and powder coating.
Ray
-
TJS nordic has a beautiful yellow Nordic ;D
-

Ray
Absolutely no offense on the yellow, I like it, is the insert color silver flake or just white/grey? The pump is all aluminum with exeption of the shaft and grate, unless of course you luck out and have a stainless impeller, the entire pump only weighs about 50 pounds..
I guess this means you have a name for the boat already? The Happy Bannana ;D
If you have parts powdercoated, make sure they do the marine finish first....This is supposed to stop the corrosion in it's tracks.
GT
-
LOL actually, the name I have picked out, and lord knows why I find this funny, check U-Tube and Search "Peanut Butter Jelly Time". That is the boats name and purpose. That is the funniest thing I'ver seen on U-Tube in awhile. So, across it's transom top, I've already commissioned the girl to arbrush that on, lol

I want to thank you all, personally, for your input. You have no idea, or maybe some of you do, what it means. I plan on having this boat in the water this summer, and god willing, I'm not sure I even beleive in god anymore, but anyway, the kids will be skiing by july.
I have learned more in a couple of hours here than I could in several weeks in a library. For that I thank you. I am, more than likely, goping to ask more and more seemingly dumb questions as this thing progresses. One of which comes to mind immediately, what cam/intake combo works great on a 460 Ford???.

Not a Ford guy, but there are many here, Just FWIW, the only stupid question is one that is never asked..
Thinking 700-750 CFM carb, modified dual plane (like the performer RPM) or open (like the Wiend Team G or Stealth) with a 1" spacer, and I have had good luck with Comps stuff on the BBC, their Extreme Marine line is good for the dough, but if you can swing the scratch, go hydraulic roller...Just shoot for 4800-5000 RPM on the recommended parts and all will be good.
What normally decides what cam and intake is the type of exhaust (headers vs. logs).
Looking forward to seing this thing get a new life!

Look forward to boating with some of you guys.

OK, thanks for everything guys, now gonna go broke with the parts I'm buying and have already bought. Now things are taking a turn for the worse. Seems a buddy of mine lined me up with a 550hp 460. That's before I bolt on the tunnel Ram and stuff I already bought for this beast. Sounds like wet socks material and just what I need to turn this thing into the "Yellow Submarine"........... Now that I type that, the wife was a beatlemaniac.......Hmmmmm....... Anyway, this thing only has what I would call traditional motor mounts, coming off the mount pads to the stringers held in place by 2 bolts per side and the bell housing bolted to the jet. I'll post pics tomorrow. This concerns me. WTF am I in for? Have the jet out ready to ship to Tom for a checkup/rebuild, whatever it needs, but am I putting too much motor in this thing?

Btw, is it ok to run an aluminum crank hub on an internally balanced 460? or do I need to use a dampner or fluid dampner? Also, no flywheel, ok to use a generic automatic flexplate or one of those SFI flexplates?
Ray
-
I would recommend an SFI rated flexplate (heavier) or an aluminum flywheel, as far as the Harmonic balancer, if you are planning on a lot of run time, I would run an SFI rated dampener (Rattler, Fluidamper etc...), just my .02c, harmonics is a killer IMO...
If you have the means, go all the way for endurance. ;)
GT
-
I ran a Summit brand damper on mine .
SFI approved to 10k , removable counter weight .
Pretty good piece , especially for the price .
-beerjet-
-
Thanks, I was leaning towards the fluid dampner anyway, but a friend I used to drag race against has this hub from a 429 he was willing to donate. you know as well as I do that donated parts are priceless. But in thinking about it, the flywheel came into my lil brain. .......hmmmm got a starter, wtf is it gonna engage into?............ these little things can get you. How embarassing would that be not to be able to start the silly thing once you got it to the lake? I think the hand crank from my dad's Farmall might be a handy addition to the fire extinguisher...............
Ray
-
You're right about the Summit pricing on Summit branding. Funny thing you brought that up. Summit Racing was a Mom and Pop thing when I was growing up about 40 miles west from where I grew up In Youngstown, Ohio. We used to make the drive all the time for our weekend projects when I was in High school. What's changed is, since they started advertising in every Hot Rod and Car Craft magazine in the 80's, they're in a position to have parts made for them by the same companies they represent. In other words, melling will sell them an oil pump or Milodon will sell them an oil pan for a HUGE discount becuase they don't have to stand behind it, for one, and they can mass produce anything. Summit Has to assume the warranty, and the mfr is out of it. Same part, but where you used to buy a Holley Fuel pump, and it was replaced if failed, no questions asked, the same pump made by holley, under the Summit name, well different story.
Ray
-
So am I right about the flexplate, the only reason for it to exist is to give the starter something to engage to? The farmall crank is sounding like a better Idea already if that is true. Been there done that so many times I have no problem pull starting an engine that could wrap me around it in a heartbeat. Just kidding, really. what is everyones thought on front (bow) mounted batteries and tanks? Seems I have a lot of dead space up there, and since Tom has pretty much talked me into going Place Divertor on this money pit, ..................

Hey Ray didnt even finish one and now you are starting on another ??? You taking lessons from 2sav ??? ;D ;D ;D Is it yellow also ??? Wheres the pics ??? ???
-
lol well, yeah, I guess so. Started out buying headers from the guy, next thing you know he's pulling out double pumpers, cables, steering gear, all sorts of stuff. Seems he had some clown build up the 460 in it only to have it blow up on it's maiden voyage, so he said f-it, and was trying to part it out. Before the conversation was over he said well why don't you just buy the whole thing? Then he showed it to me and we hashed out a price. :screwy:
I didn't take any pics of it yet, still not at my house. Buy you guys gotta swear not to laugh at the paint job, it's neat! And it's not yellow, but has similar meaning to us. lol I'll see if the guy can e-mail pics of the thing.

Dunno who that is, all I know is I needed new exhaust for mine, as the aforementioned snail was cracked, and really wanted OT headers anyway, got a smoking deal off E-bay from this guy for pratically brand new Bassetts, complete with lines and Aeroquip hoses, etc. Then the conversing started. He is from Cali, and the boat's gonna be delivered sometime week after next.
You guys ever hear of the Moo books for children? lol

The Saguaro's far from a dead deal, though, it's at a friends house, he's a 'glass pro and cheap (Works for supplies and beer). Once it's done there a buddy of HIS is going to paint it for the cost of the paint, then ship the jet to Tom. THEN I gotta get it back and start remembering how it all came apart. As for now, I have to finish it's engine, (Yeah, I got one for it), speaking of which, anyone got a Marine 460 oil pan and pickup they can spare?, and get the trailer gone over, wired correctly and painted. It should be ready by early summer, I hope. The engine for it is wild, far wilder than I originally wanted, but that's how these things grow.

OMFG!!!! NOW I get it, 2sav, tooo f***ing funny.
Actually the Saguaro is progressing nicely, it's at a friends house, a 'glass pro, works cheap (Beer and supplies), then it's going to a buddy of HIS that's going to paint it for the cost of supplies, then I gotta in the meantime finish up this engine I got for it, BTW, anyone got a 460 marine pan and pickup they want to part with? don't feel like spending $500 for a shiney Milodon when all it does is hold all this dirty, filthy black crap. Still have to ship the jet to Tom, then I figure by march I gotta figure out how it all came apart. Then the interior, hoping I can hit up Lucky Stiff for a start on that tho.

holy cow pie Ray, no wonder you were worried about us laughin at your purchase :sly: just razzing you bud, and ya the trailer does look nice ;D ;D

Honestly though, I think I see why 2sav has so many projects, cheaper to buy the cow (Can't beleive I SAID that), than to piece shop sometimes, And you want to see them all back in condition, a vicious cycle.

2sav, so many projects ??? ??? hell he only has 1 @ 40 some odd pages long :screwy: :screwy: good thing that guy dont come around anymore ;D ;D ;D ;D

Lol, I KNEW you guys would never let this go, Promises Promises not to laugh, lol
Seriously, Cindy was a priority pre-school teacher, meaning she taught special needs kids. Kids that were on feeding tubes, in wheel chairs to severely autistic (Kinda like me, lol), and the Moo thing came up, she INSISTED on naming my Springer Spaniel Moo. That came from when I hooked her school up with a special Kid's Workshop at my Home Depot, then I got roped into reading to one of her classes during their "Circle time". I read one of the Moo books, the one about Halloween. Funny stuff. I was laughing and getting into it so much she made me do it quite often, and it always involved those Damn Moo books. They're so funny to read as an adult, and if you read them to kids, you automatically try to "Get into it" and it gets funnier, lol. Hence I couldn't say no to this boat, lol

What diff does it make? One or the udder? lol. Gonna leave this one alone for now I think. Once it ghets here I'll pull the engine and see how bad it is. Other than the Bassetts, it's complete, so if it's not hurt that bad, I may actually have it on the water before the Saguaro. To answer your question, I think both may make the water this spring. -
The New boat has a Berk JE pump, blown engine, yet complete. New heads, intake, cam, assoted other hardware. I MAY be able to salvage the engine. Won't know until it gets here and I get it ripped down. For now, parts from it are going on the engine for the Saguao, re The flywheel, the fuel pump, the oil pan, etc. The engine I bought was built for street/strip, so no marine stuff. Then I Have to evaluate what I gotta do to put Moo back in the water. And it will, we May sell it, but it's gonna be in the water. My best guess from everything this guy told me and my gut instinct is, it's a very salvageable engine.
\
My concern is, I beleive the Saguaro Hull is better than the SleekCraft. So the High HP engine is going there. If I'm wrong, let me know.
-
Lol, Never thought about the dalmations, but, it DOES fit, lol so what, name it 102??? LOL
-
Ok, I'll say it, "STEP AWAY FROM CRAIGSLIST AND EBAY" Get your Saguaro in the water and quit collecting boats. Thank you, you may now return to your regularly scheduled programming
-
Lol Lucky stiff gets my checkbook
-
But Then again, Where's a guy to get Ford parts amongst a bunch of Chebbie guys?
-
thats the problem, the chebby guys are always selling parts, they is always breaking ;D ;D not as easy getting the ford parts ;D
-

When Chevies break, there is salvagable stuff, when Ford break, it's all junk. :o LOL
Or maybe when the Ford throws rods, they go through the bottom of the boat and they're gone forever... :sly:
I'm gonna run a Cosworth! >:D

there you are. When I got the suguaro, I told my uncle, (The one who had the blown biesemeyer) I need to go BBC on it. He said No, go with what it was set up for, first. The ford has more power potential anyhow, AND you already have all the hookups. Gonna cost you more, but in then end you have a better boat. This was from a guy who back in HIS day, bought a new '64 GTO and then had Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins Build an engine for it before he even took delivery.

Because I'm partial , here are some pictures to keep your project juices flowing ;D

By the way , I have all the upholstered panels that go on the inside of your boat .
There is blue piping on pearl white diamond stitch.
I guess you can always have the blue piping swapped out for silver or yellow .

I used to have 4 bucket seats with the side panels and it made keeping the upholstery out of the wheather a breeze .
Let me know , it's just sitting getting kicked around right now .

Funny you say that GT, I was thinking,, and THAT"S a dangerous thing, but I have a '92 Cutlass with a 335 HP (supposedly) turbo Quad cam v-6. The predecessor to the Northstar engine. Running 2 turbochargers on it. 1 of like 5 built I think, or so I'm told. Been in my garage forever, won't pass emissions no matter what I friggin do. Might have something to do with the gutted cats. Yeah that's it. lol, must be the Cats.
Anyway, the thought crossed my mind, well,,,,,,,,,,,2 boats,,,,,,, hmmmmm........
-
_beerjet_, how much, and ship it now, all I can say
-
I'll even take the bimini top, was thinking I needed to add blue anyway, being a Ford powered thing
-
LL!
So are you building both or just the udder one?... ;D

One of the Pro4 late model race teams I worked for was running the little brother to that engine (the Olds Quad4) with a stock crank and rods, big compression, custom cams and dual Weber DCOE50 carbs making 325+HP. So I'm sure that with the right turbo set up and a good build that engine would do 450-500hp. I just don't know how well it would push a pump in a jet boat.
But it would be fun trying ;D

Looks like your projects are MOOOOOOOving right along keep up the good work!

You know Ralph , until recently with everyone pointing it out , I get a good run in the boat and I'd look back and the fukin scoop was always crooked . :D
The scoop was straightened out for the picture BTW .

Crewcheif, funny thing about the Quad4 being the little brother to the TDC 3.4 v-6. Isn't true, actually. The quad4 used a typical timing chain/gear arrangement, where this thing uses a 2" Gilmer belt drive, that seems to run from the front of the car to the back of the car then back again. Changed it once, no wonder the Chebby dealer wanted $1200 to do it. The quad4 IS more the grand father of the northstar though than my engine, but from what I understand, and I could be wrong, it also inherited the same problems with water in the oil, which is why the quad4 was dropped.
Ex-wife #1 had a Grand Am with the quad 4, silly thing was recalled about every other week.

I need to find a 15' aluminum Sprint boat to bolt in one of these badboys! :sly:

Tee hee, my dad has a jon boat and a couple canoes he might part with for that project?
Getting my mind back on these quad4's, I remember a Hot Rod article on a company in Detroit that was furnace brazing two of those blocks together with a custom crank into a 90 degree V-8. Thing made something like 900 or so hp with the stock FI on pump gas at the time. Was early 90's I think. Gonna hafta try the hot rod site and see if it's archived there anywhere.

Back in the late 90's I was gathering information to build a turbo/fuel injected Quad4 to put into my 65 Nova. If I had actually built the combo I think it would have been a very competitive street/strip hot rod. But instead I sold everything and went truck racing :screwy:

Just thought it was time to END this thread.
Guys, and All of you, I thank you. I adore each and every one of you. Don't take this the wrong way.
I will post pics of these boats in other threads (when I figure out how again) because it just occurred to me that every time I reference them it comes back here. And I appreciate all the emails and condolences I got from many of you. I am someone you do not even know, and you did that. For that, I feel closer to you than family.
I am at a point where it doesn't matter any more, what happened, well, it is what it is . What matters are my kids, and now these boats, and yes you guys. Tremendous diversions they and you, are.
I post and chat, and even converse on cell with some of you, and let me tell you, there is no better group on earth, but I realized that the more I revisited the more I want to somewhat forget. I have no problem with ANY of you I have been in contact with. You have ALL been supportive, and even congratulary with my accomplishments. For that I thank you.
My wife died, according to autopsy and death certificates, of " Hypertensive cardiovascular disease" at 38. Natural causes, but my argument nothing natural with that at 38, but who am I. I share this information with you as friends. I guess you never know when your number is up. All I know is I found her dead.
But then I send someone here to see what I'm doing, and I sent a Newbie here to see my boats, for that that I gotta leave this alone. I have for my part, left it alone and haven't been in this thread for a short time. Then someone wants to see my boats and I send them here.
I'm done feeling sorry for myself, have been for some time, and now we're getting it on.
PLease let this be the last thread for this. I'll repost with the Saguaro and Rebel rebuilds in diff posts.
Just me talking to me and my closest friends, ok
Ray
Now realizing I have opened my world to you guys, I'm proud. You guys are beyond words. But other newbies like myself don't need to be exposed to that. It's all about the boats here. right??
