well got my old stringers out. now need to know how many layers of fiber mat to put on them  

Your answer will depend on numerous things. I know, not the answer you were looking for.

It is not necessarily about how many layers, it is about the thickness of finished job.

It is measured in "ounces". Are these full stringers? how square are the corners?, has the new wood been rounded and smoothed?

If it were me, I would shoot for a finished thickness of less than 3/16" near the bottom of the stringer not exceeding 1/8" at the top, this could equate to a couple of layers of Matting, the lighter the better and a finish layer of finish cloth, this will give the best results with the least amount of work, be sure to use plastic squeegees and maybe pick up some PVA mold release to protect it while curing.

You can use woven roving, but be prepared to spend some quality time with some sandpaper between layers...

Bondo spreaders are great.  , But remember, "Bondo" is a brand name, you are looking for filler spreaders or squeegees.

The mold release does two things (only use it on the last topcoat of waxed resin) it keeps the bugs from sticking and allows you to use something like wax paper to ensure the finish is flat....


Make sure the weather is not too warm or cold.

talk to tom tonight got some good infor and  set my stringers in tonight nice.tomorrow night will glass up the stringers. then hope to order my cables from tom next week. again thanks tom and GT for good information.

Thank you guys ill get on it.   You said to put it on stands to do the work ? its still on the trailer would that be ok or should I take it off ?
