73 Kona build, moved from Hulls

Well I got a little more done, Removed the rest of the jet pump, rub rail and a good part of the sanding on the deck. After removing the through transum exhaust tips I decided I might as well replace the wood in the transum there a few rotted areas

. I have to get the intake out first, man what a pain that is

Got the intake out today, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but did take some time. Also got the fuel tanks out. Time to start grinding.
I went to my budys shop to check out his 383 stroker thats going in a 71 scout full restoration, heres a pic.

Transom removed, it was actually pretty easy

. I used a plunge cut saw and cut through the fiberglass on the inside of the transom and was able to peel the hole peice off, so now I have a good template

. The wood pretty much fell out in peices ! Next to do is sand down the glass inside, cut my new marine plywood and glass it in.

Also I found a set Basset OT headers and should have them in around a week

Here's a little up date. I had planed to grind down the horrible glass work in the back and on the stringers from previous owner but once I started grinding and I discovered the stringers had some rott to them

so i cut them out up to where the front motor mount is for now just to make it easier to glass in the transom. Instead of using plywood my neighbor gave me some 1/2" Pensky board from his work it looks like plywood painted black but is some kind of plastic that wil never rott

. I will get the transom all glassed in by next weekend and then put the hull on a three point stand so I can finish getting the stringers replaced. Two weekends of grinding sux!! Trying to upload pics

Looking good.

I bought one of those HF plunge cut saws too.

I didn't get until after I cut most of the stringers out using a die grinder.

That saw is the best thing since sliced bread.

Its great for tight places and I've been buying the Bosch blades from Lowes because they last longer but at $19 and $24 each

I have had to buy 4 now it sure adds up.

I used the cresent shaped blade for most of the cutting then used the narrow straight blade in tight places.

I have the same saw and the teeth kept wearing out on the blade. So I got the diamond blade and that didn't seem to bite as much.

So what I have been doing now is when my blade wears down to almost smooth, I take the blade off the saw, clamp it in my bench vice, then with a cut off wheel on my dremel I cut little notches and make new teeth. Their not perfect but it works and cuts great.

A little update, Got the transom glassed in today

. I wetted down the back side of the 1/2" pensky board with resin then laid one layer of 2oz cloth on top of that coated with resin and rolled out the air bubbles, after that I coated the fiberglass on the inside of where the transom is with resin and set the pensky board in place. I used a few aluminum angles and screws to pull the two pieces together but put the screw through ares of the transom that will be patched over. So after that sets up I will glass over the inside with a layer of 2oz cloth then woven roven and a second layer of 2oz cloth.

I want to epoxy some small voids inside around the transom peice and the hull before I glass it in, so I went ahead and glassed in the old TT exhaust holes and misc holes for know.

Can someone answer a question. My buddy suggest when I glass the transon closed inside to first use the 2oz cloth, then woven roven, then another layer of 2oz cloth or is that over kill $:-\$

a little up date..been sanding away and added a few chinny things to the motor

waiting on my new polished intake to come in. I'll post some pics of the boat later. I was thinking of clear coat the aluminum on the motor $:-\$ Does anyone have an opinion on the clear coating ? does it work ?

I like the yellow you are using.

I am painting my boat yellow.

Not sure what will be the accent color on the hull.

The seats are tan.

Thanks GT, Mine will be white with yellow accents. Pretty much the same paint scheme as now, but yellow with a flame design on the Bow.

Pretty much spent the last 7 hrs sanding with the DA using 120 grit to get down to the original gel coat. I still have a few areas in tight places that need sanded but it's

30 and im whooped.

Finaly had some time off from work and was able to get a little more done. After I replaced the transom there was a few voids because I installed the pensky board in two pieces and wasn't cut precise measurements ( 1/4" gaps here and there) so filled the areas with some Sea going poxy I just happen to have laying around.

After that set I sanded down smooth then layed one layer of 2oz cloth! Next step will be to get the boat on a three point stand and replace the stringers.
Seeing how I used pensky board that will never rott vs plywood I was thinking one layer of 2oz cloth on the inside should be fine...any thoughts on that ?
I talked to Tom at JBP the other day regarding parts needed for my WJ pump and sent him pics as well to help me figure what was needed to put it all back together, seems to be a good guy and very willing to help Thanks Tom
