77 hallett bubble deck
« on: January 07, 2023, 09:56:23 AM »
My hallett bubble deck project that I am building. I am new to posting stuff so I hope everything looks ok. I will post more pics and details soon. But for now the boat is a hallett bubble deck. Motor is 600 hp big block Chevy. Full set back jet. All new wood in boat. New transom, stringers, bulk heads, gunnel supports. All new gel top and bottom. The boat will not be perfect but I am doing all the work myself.

Some details on the glass work. All the wood is totally wrapped in glass. I am using 18/08 biaxiel fiberglass on everything. I am sure it?s overkill but I would rather it be overkill then underkill. All my materials are from sherfab in Ontario.

Started building my seats. 1/8? 5052 aluminum. Pretty solid seats and light weight and won?t rot.

I set the intake. It is at 4.5 degree off the keel and the mouth of the shoe is 1? behind the transom. Some will say it?s too far out but some will like it. Flipped the boat to start working the bottom

The boat bottom is getting a full detail. I removed the hook. And flattened out the low spots. I have been talking to Todd Griggs and Chris starkweather. Those two guys know a lot about how to make a jet bot go fast.

The original center lifting strakes ended in front of the jet. When I moved the jet back the strakes were too far away. So I extended them out to the transom like a gullwing. It should give the boat more lift. It might work, it might not work. If it doesn?t work I will have to grind them back off.

While the boat was upside down I figured what better time then now to fit the trailer. So I bought a trailer and modified it to fit.I added 2 cross members to the trailer and refit the bunks. And polished up the old chrome rims.

Got the white gel coat on. Gel coat is a new process to me. It?s a little more difficult than paint. But it came out nice.

Got some red and blue and cut and buffed the bottom. It was a lot of work but I am happy with it.

I left room to move the engine forward 3? so if I have a handling issue due to the lifting strakes, I can try moving the engine first before I grind the strakes off.

I?m kinda in no man?s land with this boat. I?m just now sure how to set it up so I have to give it plenty of room for adjustment.

Ride plate and shims built. Set the Engle to 4 degrees up off keel as a starting point. Also built ride plate stiffeners.

Getting my engine out back together. Also this is a great tool. The engine is a 489 with 10.3:1 compression. Gm iron heads from a chevelle super sport. 2.25 intake valve/ 1.88 exhaust valve. Heads are ported as much as possible. Everyone told me not to waste my time with these heads but they have been working good. The motor dynoed at 604 hp and pushed my old boat to 80 mph on gps. That boat was heavy. Way heavier then this bubble deck. My cam is 714 lift with 264/272 @.050 on a 108 LSA. This cam is bigger then what I had in the engine when I dynoed it.
