Title: 91 Canyon tunnel jet
Post by: roost on October 25, 2015, 11:43:57 AM
Finally got this home from Pico Rivera yesterday, so let the restoration begin. Not a lot known about this as the seller wasn't a boater and it was given to him. What I DO know is BBC (unknown displacement), MSD, dual double pumper tunnel ram, Berk with a wedge and diverter. The hull is pristine with no gel chips anywhere, just a couple stress cracks in the deck. It seems like a medium layup, so it's not a potato chip hull.  The balsa floor needs a REALLY good buffing, and I'm hoping to b ring the vinyl back so it's reasonably presentable.
Last registration was 1995, so obviously the fuel system will be blown apart and cleaned/rebuilt.
First up, wash, buff and scrub the vinyl......

Spent the day cleaning and getting to know this boat. Nothing earth shattering, but it's odd how there's just NO wear on this boat. It's like it was used from 91 to 95 (last year it was registered) and then just put away. There's a ton of polishing to do since the nozzle, diverter, bowl, tunnel ram, valve covers and billet engine brackets were all polished.
Pulled a valve cover and found a stock valve train on 990 heads, and doesn't look like it's ever been run!Looked up the list#'s and it has 750 dp Holleys on it that'll need to be freshened.
Ordered all new cables tonight, with carb kits and fittings to be ordered this week.

Looks like the last one that did the heads sprayed them with Glyptol (the red paint). Looked at the pushrods and there's absolutely NO scuffing from the guide plates either. The fuels tanks don't smell sour, but they'll be coming out and cleaned when the lines are replaced/replumbed.

You never know WHAT you'll find when you look at those odd Craigslist ads. The subject line on this one was "Corvette boat". Soon as I opened it and saw the shot of the transom, it was mine...... "corvette" or not.

Rant and a question. What EVER made mounting an MSD box under the drain holes on the headers a good idea? Pulled it yesterday (and the spiffy bracket they made) so I can relocate it, but now the question is WHERE. First issue is I don't have a splash guard (yet), but thinking mounting it under the gunnel will keep it nice and dry. It would be EASIER to mount it to the top of the bellhousing below the electrical panel, but without a splash guard, that's a disaster waiting to happen.
Anyone have a good idea on where to mount it and maybe have some pics?

I mounted mine on the transom as high as I could under the gunnel.

Here's my thought about mounting the control box. I like the idea of mounting it on the inside of the transom under the gunnel, it's just HOW. I'm thinking glassing this bracket (won't use the Dzus fasteners) to the inside of the transom, use isolators to mount the control box to the bracket, then re-wire and extend the wires as needed. The alternative would be to screw the bracket to the transom wood, but I don't like the long term prospects of that holding up.

Did this on a Rogers.  A terminal strip mounts horizontally across the bottom, just above the stringer and relays mount vertically on the front.  Not really a fan of mounting things to the transom unless it can be tied into the through-bolts holding transom plates and/or swim steps.  Vibration always causes it to work loose.

Interesting idea. I don't know that I'd be comfortable mounting it that low with as little freeboard as this has, but something to consider.

Got home from work and started playing. I don't really need ready access to to the controller, so started looking around for wasted space (and a way to mount it). First pic is where it WAS mounted, and anybody that has OT headers knows why this was a REALLY bad idea.
I got lucky that there are (what I call out of ignorance) blast plate brackets bolted through the transom and the bolt spacing was real close to the width of the controller. The only material I had available to play with was steel plate, so I don't know if this will be the finished piece or just a proof of concept. Either way, it tucks in real nice behind the battery, is well sheltered from water, I can still get to to limiter chip (6,000 in there now), and I can re-wire it neatly.  :)

I'll be starting to bring the engine back to life this weekend and am going to go sloooooowwwww. Fog the cylinders, change the oil and filters, pull the valve covers, pull the distributor and circulate oil with a oil pump primer. I'll be checking for oil at the rockers, inspect the springs and seals and pour some oil over over the springs before bolting the covers back on. Disconnect the driveline, pull the plugs and (hopefully) spin it over with the plugs out. The fuel system won't be rebuilt for a few weeks, so I won't be lighting it off, but want to make sure there aren't any rude noises or other issues first.
Baby steps.... it's been 20 years since it's been alive.......

It's a good night. Replaced the 3 position ignition switch with a 4 position (didn't get a key with it) tonight. Took care of something that bugs the crap out of me.... not being able to check the gauges or run the bilge pumps without powering the ignition. Why they added a separate switch for the tach I don't know, but whatever. Put a battery in it to check out what I can and everything (so far) is good. All gauges respond, all 3 bilge pumps come on, but I'll test the MSD tomorrow night, and the alternator later when I fire it.
Time for a beer...  ;D

I'm a couple weeks away from that. Right now the priority is fog the cylinders, replace the oil filters, pump out the old and add new oil. When that's done, pull the distributor and spin the oil pump to prime the system and check for oil pressure and flow to the top end. If all's well to that point, crank the engine over with the plugs out and listen for noises. I'm waiting on fittings and rebuild kits for the carbs as well, so it'll be a while.

Got all new cables in for it yesterday and replaced the throttle cable last night. Sprinkled a little bit which made it just that much more enjoyable. I miss daylight savings time already. Best part (as stupid as it sounds)? The replacement cables are black not red!

Brought the oil evacuator home from the river so I can pump the old oil out. Beats the hell out of trying to use a drain hose, or dump it in the bilge  :o Ordered everything to rebuild the carbs and re-plumb the fuel system and (of course) they were out of stock on the FPR. At least I can get the carbs done.....

Got about 3/4 of the way thru the 2nd carb tonight. I need to make a decision about the secondary jetting as the rear carb has 76's and the front has 78's. Not that big of a difference, but would feel better matching them (both primaries are 72's). I don't how much cam this has so I'm going with 6.5 PV's and will see what happens when I run it.

Still have a lot to do before that. Pull the plugs, fog the cylinders, pump out the old oil, put in fresh with some zinc, pull fuel tanks and clean/flush them, spin the oil pump to check pressure. Last, bring back a couple fuel cans of race fuel from the river to fire it. Won't be happening till after T-giving at least.

I've been thinking (which is ALWAYS dangerous as Jerry knows) that with as long as this has been sitting, it may not be enough to just spin the oil pump to circulate fresh oil. It looks like with the intake off, it's pretty easy to get oil on the cam lobes so it has some lubrication before I crank it. It'll also give me an opportunity to have the intake re-polished, so for the price of an intake gasket set I can't think of a downside.

Is it a flat tappet cam?  You could brush on some assembly lube.
Title: Re: 91 Canyon tunnel jet
Post by: roost on November 18, 2015, 10:06:47 AM
If this engine has been broken in I'll just use high zinc oil. I hate that assembly lube (moly) winds up in the pan as sludge or in the filters. If it's fresh (the prev owner mentioned it was rebuilt, but I'm skeptical) then assembly lube it is and I'll break it in right.

Finished plumbing the fuel system (pump to reg), and while reconnecting the water lines found the fitting from the "T" to the t-stat housing corroded, so broke out some more 1/2" 304. The handwriting is on the wall..... probably wind up replacing all the braided stainless with hardline. Ditched the 80's valve covers and pulled a set of MT's off the shelf too.

Here's the beauties that were on it. Plenty of room for roller rockers, girdles, etc. Similar to the old B&M's from the 80's without the logo. Not much looks-wise.....
Title: Re: 91 Canyon tunnel jet

Can't say I was upset when I pulled the valve covers and found stock rockers, as I figured it was the apparent age of the engine running older components. I figured it'd be a good idea to pull the intake and lube the cam before spinning it, so off came the manifold. I was pleasantly surprised to find what was underneath though. For the life of me I can't figure out WHY they would run a roller cam, but stock rockers.  :screwy:
Good news is I can get the intake re-polished as well as not worry about the cam when it lights off.

For those that have polished bowls, nozzles, brackets, etc..... more power to you. What's odd about this (over and above the previous posts) is the bowl, droop, nozzle, reverse bucket and brackets were polished  with everything but the bowl anodized. Problem is, the anodizing has gotten cloudy, so if I were a real glutton for punishment I would strip and re-polish them, and have that joy every time I pull it out of the water.  :banghead: What I think I'm going to do is prep them and shoot them with white appliance epoxy giving them a stock look. I've great luck with it on the pumps in my other boats and not having more to polish regularly doesn't hurt my feelings.

Not a whole lot "new", but finishing up what I started. Fuel system fab is done, throttle linkage almost finished (just waiting on a few stainless rod ends), and custom fit the wire set. After staring down the intake ports, it looks like this engine has not been started since rebuilt. There's absolutely NO carbon on the backside of the intake valves but without a bore scope I can't see the chambers. Don't know why 2 of the shots show the gel as a lovely aqua color :o
Next is pull the tanks and clean them out......

Not a real big deal, but the shaft assy was bugging the crap out of me. For some reason, a PO thought it would be a cool idea to paint it RED (like they did parts of the throttle linkage)  :screwy:. There's NO RED on this boat other than the crappy spray bomb job on these two items. The linkage was fixed last week, so this weeks task was bead blast, prep (with ospho) and shoot the assy with black appliance epoxy. I love painting small parts with this stuff..... high gloss, hard as a rock and holds up in a marine environment far better than other paints.
Looking forward to getting some REAL work done on it this weekend.... after putting up Xmas lights, the tree, etc.

The more I look at the interior, the more it's bugging me too. It needs new wood on the passenger seat and new vinyl all around, so I'm in a quandary.
Replace the interior with the old style seating so it's "new" again, or upgrade with 2 benches to update it?

Replace the interior with the old style seating so it's "new" again, or upgrade with 2 benches to update it?
Two buckets and call it a day.

I have the next 2 weeks off, so it's time to knock out a couple projects. Boat-wise, I'll be replacing all the braided stainless but the oil lines with stainless hardline. I'll also be getting off my ass to finish the '31. blowing apart all the suspension pieces for powdercoat, and do the finish welding & grinding on the frame to prep for paint.

You're right, there could be an issue, but all the work I'm doing is so I CAN start it (well, except for the water lines and cables). Carbs needed to be rebuilt, the fuel lines had to be re-done and a regulator added, so rather than cobble it together just to fire it and possibly CREATE an issue, I spent some time and a couple bucks doing it right the first time. I'm only in this $3-400 over the purchase price, so if there is an issue, it's not the end of the world.

Got curious yesterday and pulled a header. There's carbon in the exhaust ports, so I'm relieved to at least know the engine was run rather than being an unfired rebuild. Was the engine good when parked? We'll soon see......

Spent a couple hours trying to fire it yesterday. First, got it to sneeze through the carbs and backfire (and scare the crap out of the dog). Turned the distributor 180 and nothing. I'll be going back to square one setting TDC on #1, checking the valves to make sure I'm not 180 out, and re-test the MSD. Good thing I don't have any river trips hinged on running this thing......
Title: Re: 91 Canyon tunnel jet
Post by: roost on May 03, 2016, 06:53:28 PM
IT'S ALIVE! Went back to square one, verified TDC, set the initial timing, gave it a couple squirts and it lit off. I don't have the tanks filled yet, just running it by dribbling down the carbs. I can tell a couple things already..... it's got a LOT of compression, and pretty damn healthy. I'll bring some 103 back this weekend to get the fuel system dialed in and ready it for some water.

This weekend the engine comes out and goes on the stand. I'm expecting some type of bearing issue, I just hope it didn't take out a rod. My painter has a freshly machined 454 he got in a trade and has generously offered it to me, so if I find a crank issue, I'll see if I can just put the fresh crank and bearings in to get it going.

I got it to cough but as I continued to crank it, some strange noises emerged. It was cranking slow, laboring on one cylinder and developed a thumping sound, so I decided to pull it apart.
As I suspected, it is a relatively fresh build. At some point a small nut fell into the intake and ultimately wound up in this cylinder. That's the culprit for the labored cranking and the thumping sound. No apparent damage to the piston crown or upper ring land, so a little clean up, new gaskets and it's time to fire it. I hope I don't need any more good luck the rest of the year!
I'll be looking for a number on the piston to try to determine the CR, but it sure isn't 8 to 1 with a dome like that.

Doing more homework on this engine. With the block and head casting #s and piston style, it looks like this started life as an iron head 425 horse L78. I'll be trying to find some specs on the roller cam before I button it up again. It makes a little more sense now why there are 2 750's on a tunnel ram with dome pistons at 11:1. No pump gas for this, but I should come off the trailer over 60 mph

Pulled the piston out and the top compression ring was a tad tight at the point of impact. Dressed it up and checked the rod and bearing and they're OK. Other than the carbon on the pistons, you would think this engine was just assembled.
Gaskets coming, so it may get fired next week. Taking a week off from work to get the '31 over the hump and should be able to get this re-assembled and back in the hull.

While I'm waiting for gaskets to get here, I got curious about the hydraulic roller cam in this thing. Set up the dial indicator and measured the lobe lift, so with 1.7 rockers this cam comes out to .600 int, .560 exh gross lift. Can't tell what the duration is, but at least I know it's a fairly stout RV cam...... :o

Close as I can tell, these pistons with the 118cc 990 heads put the compression around 12:1. I could probably get by with 100LL avgas, but I"d be a lot happier with a pump gas deal.
Could I swap pistons now? Sure, but I haven't even had this boat wet yet and don't want to through any more money into it until/if/when I get a grin on my face to justify it.

As I've dug in to this I've found a few things that make me shake my head. It was weird..... as I was putting the lifters in, I was thinking ahead and wondered how stupid would it be if there a pushrod with no oil hole. Someone put quite a bit of money into it years ago, but the attention to detail in assembly doesn't match the quality of parts. Fixing what I can one part at a time......

I'm a sucker for Halibrand-style wheels. I had them on my flatbottom trailer and it made the look.

Yesterday was tons of fun..... get new tires and clean and pack the hubs  :sly: No surprises.... bearings are all good, seals are ok, after cleaning decades of grease off the hubs they looked like crap, so gee, let's paint them.
Gotta get some gardening done, then see if it wants to light off.

Well, no love firing it today. I don't think this starter has the balls to spin a 12:1 motor, so time to find another (and pull the motor to replace it )

I got one you can borrow if you want to make sure it's the starter.

I appreciate the offer, but with the PIA this is to change, I need to do this one time. 99.9% sure this starter just doesn't have it 'cuz it cranks slow and I can spin it with a breaker bar. Too much compression, too little starter.

Holy crap! Cranked it over when I got home and got a sneeze. Gave it a shot and it lit off! This thing is nasty as hell but a bit temperamental. This starter doesn't have the cranking speed to light it off consistently so it floods. A new starter will be coming.....

Filled the bowls with 110. The tanks still need to come out for a look see. That'll happen when the passenger seat comes out for new wood. This thing was crisp and had that pro stock bark to it. It'd be nice if I could get it to start consistently.

My idea was to replace the seats with the buckets you had, but the Treasurer is watching what I'm spending on this and I don't know that I can blow by a new upholstered pair by her. For the time being I'll do what I did on the Commander.... replace the wood on the passenger side and re-use the foam and vinyl.

Pulled and cleaned out the starboard fuel tank. Was really surprised to find around 3 gallons of fuel in it. Drained it, checked the inside and it was spotless. Put it back in and the other side comes out tomorrow for draining and cleaning.

Pulled the other tank, emptied and cleaned it as well as waxing the hull under it. I'm going to run it on 1 tank to sort it out and really only have the seat wood left to do before getting it wet.

Looking like the shake down will be the week of 9/12. Tourists should be off the water and be able to make nice smooth mid-week runs to get it dialed in.

Still working on getting the last loader bolt drilled thru, but there's more to be done. Pulled the passenger seat, pulled the vinyl and foam off and started building new wood. Got it all cut, fitted and ready to glass and resin wash. I can get that done after work this week and will have a couple weeks to get the carbs set and ready for water.

Here's what started the whole loader bolt fiasco. I figured it'd be a good idea to remove it to check it out since it's been sitting so long. Had a lot of surface rust and wasn't looking forward to sanding it to prep it for paint. Tried a tip I heard of by soaking it in white vinegar for a day. Came out like day one! Neutralized the acid, and did a little prep before shooting it with white epoxy. We'll see how well a blocker works with this setup.....

Last loader bolt is out and drilled for through bolting. Grade 8 Fasteners are on order and have backside of the seat back glassed. Tomorrow I'll glass the inside and resin wash the wood. Getting really close, buncha little stuff left to do before 9/12.

Had a minor fuel leak but was an easy fix. Just waiting on the starter so I can put the hose to it, set the idle mixture and ignition timing.

Got the starter this afternoon and pulled the cherry picker out to lift the rear of the engine. Got the old starter out and fit up the new one. Lowered the engine and  guess what was sitting on the hull? Yup, the bolt head. Needed to make a little modification, and this is just another instance where I needed a mill. Relieved the mounting block to clear a socket head (from the old starter... now I know why they did that), bolted it back up and it looks like it was made for it.
Got it re-assembled and decided to light it off to test it. HOLY SHIT! This thing spins FAST now..... like it's a 8:1 motor not 12:1. Woulda started easier if I had remembered to remove the scoop and collector covers first, but it was fun watching them shoot across the yard.
Just a few little things left to do before it gets wet. Should be 99% done Sunday afternoon. Oh, and it's time to start looking for a mill.....

That's worth investing in a new top mount starter and a new plate.

That'd make servicing easier, but since the cranking issue is resolved I'll leave that upgrade to the next owner. Tomorrow is fun with fiberglass to finish the seat and my punch list is nearly clear.

I'm catching a LOAD of crap about this boat from the management. She just has it in her head that once I have it set up and reliable that it'll be sold. Might be because I put the '31 on the back burner to get this done. I'm afraid this is one of those "pick your fight" deals.

The ride plate was set at 1* up and others familiar with tunnels mentioned it needs more, so I set it at 4* and we'll see how it works on it's maiden voyage.

4* is a lot.  We usually start those at 1.5* with ~4.5* being the maximum possible setting with no shims in either the shoe or ride plate.  Better to creep up on the aggressive hardware configuration.

Be safe,

Joe

P.S.  The suspense is killing me!

That's kinda what I was thinking too....... I'd run my semi-v's at 4-4.5. Seemed like lifting the bow that much with a tunnel would make it porpoise or give the shoe too much bite.

This is it's first run in open water. Kind of a snoozer, but didn't want to go balls out right away. Top speed was 50.9 (with a ton of pedal left). I've got a minor reversion issue to deal with and will be checking it out when we get back to Anaheim.
Rode wet with the ride plate at 2*, so that'll be changed next run. This was my first time driving a tunnel...... WAY different than a semi-V. Really stable at speed, turns flat compared to a V and felt great when it started packing air. Hit the gas at speed and it moves RIGHT NOW!

Thanks. What you can't see in the video is what happened just after the end. I slowed and turned left to make another pass up river. When I hit the gas to accelerate, it had dropped a cylinder. No pop, bang or anything sinister. Put it back on the trailer and parked it for the rest of the week.
I got into it yesterday back in Anaheim. Pulled the plugs (signs of reversion) and did a compression test with all cylinders between 215 and 235 so nothing catastrophic happened. Pulled the valve covers and inspected the rockers and springs with nothing out of the norm. Cleaned the plugs in the blaster, re-assembled everything and lit it off.  Was hitting on all 8 and sounded great. I knew this cam was a tad radical, so I'll be running the headers dry next time and stepping it up. Brought the ride plate up to 4* for the next tests as it wasn't lifting the bow and was riding a little wet. Pump is tight and is a blast to drive especially when it starts packing air.

Yep, it's still for sale. Winter's coming and I need to get the '31 done. The Canyon has delayed it and it's time to move on.
