Title: Brendella tunnel
Post by: propless on March 29, 2010, 11:13:11 PM
Well, here we go again !!  I have a new project.  ::)

Its a 77 Brendella tunnel.  I picked it up last winter from SoCal and had to drive through the snow (both ways) to get it.  Its in really sad shape, but I just love the way it looks.

Some pics from its former home
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2Funtitledddfu-1.jpg&hash=f44533156155afd3749f20c15713ceed367da7a8)

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2Funtitledfyfuf.jpg&hash=01a7bcd1b69f22f507ffe3153009f3efe1f58c78)

And one when it got home
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0019-1.jpg&hash=ed17a00de9f06d4b43d1d39ce64262bcd794d0e9)

Its got a Jacuzzi pump (WJ), a flat keel, a bow full of foam, a broken bulkhead (3 pieces), no room inside (total int room is 8' long X 43" wide), and it had a Chevy in it.  :screwy:  But its first issue is the paint.  Without getting into the design and color choices  :screwy:, the paint is cracked like a broken window.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0026-1.jpg&hash=ab735771f3b3a6ed03241982389e039d14cca3a9)

I started to try to sand it off, didnt work, it turned to gum as soon as the sander touched it.  :banghead:  Some of it was easy to remove with a paint scraper.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0023-1.jpg&hash=7721b621db1778fda49a3499fc9c6712f9a0970a)

There where 3 paint jobs on it over the original gel. So, eventually I gave up on the sanding and scraping, and moved on to paint stripper.  >:D  Its now down to the original gel (mostly) The good news is 90% of the cracking is gone now, most of it was just in the paint.  Theres still some on the deck, but it looks like it stops at the gel and doesn't go into the glass. The bad news is, some crackhead tried to fix some stress cracks by glassing over one of the paint jobs.  So I have a bit of glass work to do.

This where I'm at now.  Next is to get the broken bulkhead and the bow full of foam out of there.  That means I have to take the seat out, so no more sitting there day dreaming and making vroom vroom noises.
Bulkhead/foam.

Hey Proppy......

Let it never be said that you were afraid to go balls deep.... :screwy:

That looks like a very worth while project, crazy lines...

Is that beige blob OEM?  Holy cow....

Nice find.     I assume plans are on hold for the Daytona?

Yea, the Daytona is on hold.  I just cant get excited about building that big boat right now.  Not sure if the blob is OEM or not, it looks old.  All I know is its not going to be fun getting it out of there, theres almost 9' of foam under there.

Scared of the Daytona ??  If theres a boat around here to be scared of this is it Ralph.  The Daytona is a big old day cruiser compared to this.  :screwy:

The WJ is definitely coming out, there will be NO Jacuzzi pumps in my boats anymore.

It will NOT be painted like a farm animal.

Not sure on colors yet.  Ive only seen pics of 2 others, and they where both black (so no black).

Ray is crazier.  ;D  At least for now, but wait till you see what I have in mind for the dash on this one.  >:D

Spent a little time on it tonight.  Got the old gauges, steering, throttle pedal, seat, and rails out.  The seat must weigh 100lbs, its the heaviest seat Ive ever seen (for its size).  And you wont believe this one !!  The throttle pedal was bolted to the hull, there where 2 Allen head bolts showing from the inside (see last pic).  So I figured someone put nuts under the boat to bolt it down. No, they where just threaded into the fiberglass, so now I have a couple holes in the bottom of the boat to fix.  The pump, fuel tanks, and other assorted stuff should be out by the weekend. Then I can get started on the bulkhead and the big blob of foam. Still not sure how I'm going to squeeze under there to get that foam out.

Get a couple of those little folding military surplus/camping shovels, bribe a couple neighborhood kids/grandkids, put dust masks on 'em and tell 'em to have at it, and make as big a mess as they want! A couple of 10-12 year olds could have that busted out in no time.

Not sure if that would be a good idea, the kids around here aint very bright.  I really don't want to see the end of a shovel sticking out of the bow.  :o

Ive got a few ideas though, and I might try the weed eater idea.  :-\

Looks good proppy..... you tryin to pass me up on my project ;D As far as gettin the foam out just put a nice big juicy t bone steak up front under the bow and turn little Leo loose. He will loosen up alot as he digs his way to his treat O0

On that Foam Problem try a high power pressure washer with a oticialating (sp) head. They have them at low's or home depot, My pressure washer turned up to 3,500 psi with that head on it will go threw plywood fairly quickly. Man it will be a wet loud torture of a job but it will go pretty quick on a hot day and be clean as can be when done. To bad we don't live close you could use mine...   Roy

Thats why I love this place !!!   I have a big gas powered pressure washer and I would have never thought about useing it.  I bet thats going to work great, Thanks River Roy.

Well the hull is gutted.  Everything is out except the intake, and its being a bitch.  I'll get it out tomorrow, someone did a really good job setting this intake, its really solid.

I did find one thing I really didnt like, the little factory rideplate was mounted to the hull with 3 screws/bolts that (just like the throttle pedal bracket) where just threaded into the fiberglass.  :o  I dont even want to think what would have happened if it had pulled those screws out.  Two were still good and one was stripped/loose.  :screwy: :screwy:

The old pump is a real Frankenstein thing.  Its a Jacuzzi WJ, modified to fit the American Turbine droop, with a Berkeley impeller in it.  Someone had lots of time on there hands.  :sly:

So far, everything is on track to pull the bulkhead and foam Sunday

Theres not to many of them around, Ive only seen pics of two of them with jets.  One of them belongs to Jak Young of Black Bear Racing (1/4 miler on PB).  Heres his site  http://www.blackbearracing.com/index.htm , theres a few pics in his gallerey.

Well I didnt make much progress today.  Stupid holidays  :banghead:.  I got the drivers side sponson section of the bulkhead out though.  I really wanted to get it out in one piece, to use as a pattern for the new one but that didnt happen. I cut the glass around the edge of it and wouldnt move, it was glassed on both sides.  I almost grabbed the sawzall then decided that wasnt a good idea, Id probably cut through the hull.  So I just cut it into small sections and pulled it out (the wood was rotted).  I was right, there was water up there. Most of the foam still looks OK except for the very bottom of it (wet and spongy).  A couple gallons of water drained out of there.

I did find a present from someone at Brendella.  There was a hat stuck under the foam, had to have been "lost" durring assembly.  ::)

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0003-1.jpg&hash=79e5df96d48c378146f43b893ced60b229f4d31a)

Then as you can see it started to rain.  But the hull is completly gutted now, still havnt gotten that intake out of there (they did a realy realy good job on this one).

Thanks John.  I just hope someday it turns out as nice as your boat.

I cut the rest of the bulkhead out tonight.  I brought my air saw home from work and it did the job really well.
 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0005-1.jpg&hash=7191a6c5279d70dd618b6e45a40f7d1b096f5eff)

I found what I though I was going to find on this side, lots of water and nasty water soaked foam.  Here you can see all the black foam.  As soon as the saw got down to the top of the tunnel, water started coming out of the cut.
 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0006-1.jpg&hash=5787cd97e44824c715d0fe01911812cfe993c4b7)

You can see on the back of the wood how high the water level was.  Its no wonder the bow of this thing was sooooo heavy.
 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0010-1.jpg&hash=57aaa337cb39628f52498b2c8f546b2c8c33cba1)

Found a broken fuel line on the pressure washer, as soon as I get a chance to fix it I'll see how it does at removing foam.  >:D

Damn, theres LOTS of foam under this bow.

I fired up the pressure washer (from now on to be known as the "porta water jet").  This is the best way to remove foam !!!!!  It slices it up into little chunks like a wood chipper, no dust, no little pieces of foam flying around and sticking to everything.  Thanks again River Roy, Great idea.

I didnt have much time to work on it. Had to fix the fuel line on the "porta water jet", and fix the hose that the dog ate (again  >:().  But, heres the pile from tonight.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0016-1-1.jpg&hash=6f16f5609668927bd48661322b3161c72e490c4e)

Best guess is thats about 1/4 of whats under there.  My trash guy is going to be collecting foam for a couple months.  ::)

It actually didnt smell bad, maybe it wasnt wet long enough to get fragrent.  ;D

The hat is yours SD, free, I'll even throw in a big bag of foam for your boat.  ::)

I've got lots of excuses Mark,  ;)

1. No motor, still undecided on what do in this one.
2. No pump, only have some of the big parts.
3. No seats, the ones that where in there are wayyy to heavy.
4. Way to much hull work to do, I have something kinda crazy in mind for this.

Did I ever mention theres LOTS of foam under this stupid bow.  :banghead:  I've taken 6 of the big hefty lawn trash bags of that stuff out of there so far, I'm about half way through it. Me and my bright ideas, but it needed to be done.  So far Ive found 1 hat, some cardboard, a couple plastic bags, and a few unidentifiable items in the foam.  Maybe they where saving on there trash bill when they built this one, must have been a Friday boat.  ::) ;D

One strange thing I found was theres 2 different types of foam under there.  Its not a matter of wet and dry, both types are wet.  Most of the foam is a tannish color and the porta water jet cuts right through it like nothing. But, then there's an area in the pass side sponson where the foam is as white as snow and as hard as a rock. The porta water jet will not cut through it and even a shovel has a tough time with it.  It even feels different, kinda hard and grainy, like white lava rock.  :sly:  I'll get it out even if I have to resort to the sawzall.  >:D

OK, Lets go through these
1. I have an extra 454 sitting in my garage--don't plan on using it until next year.
2. Use the WJ--with a little work it will run as good as a berkeley.
3. A couple of Lucky Stiff's fiberglass buckets would be perfect.
4. And now you still have more than 2 mos. to finish up the hull.
Bingo--you're at the lake learning to drive a tunnel/hydro.

X2 on that Mark but I think thats just wishful thinking on his part so what are your big plans any ideas yet.

Wishful thinking may be true.  But I do have a plan, kinda, for now.

1. The Frankenstein pump is being replaced with a Berk. I have a good intake (already machined for a shoe/rideplate), a good suction housing and shaft, and the worked split bowl that I tried on the old boat. Just need to set the intake, buy a new/good S/S impeller, and a rebuild kit.  Also need to have some bottom work done for the intake (rounded keel intake, flat keel boat).
2. Seats will probably come from Lucky Stiff', unless I scrounge a super deal on some used ones.
3. I'm not letting on what I'm thinking about doing as far a glass work and the dash yet, I need to check a few things out first.
4. The motor.  This is where I'm really undecided.  I want something different. NO its not getting an OB !! Maybe a blower motor, maybe a really big bottle fed beast, maybe some Kaase "Boss 9" heads. I even saw a place that sells Hemi heads that fit a Mopar 440 block.  I really dint know yet, but I have a nice chunk of change in the motor fund for this one (from selling, the old boat, the flatbottom, my GSXR, my Mustang, and a few other things. not to mention Ive been living on Top Ramen noodles for the last 6mo to save money) and this one will have LOTS of hp.  I'm on a quest here, and done playing around.  >:D

Yea the porta water jet sure is making it easy. The hardest part is putting the mess in the trash bags.  ;D  I do need to go look for an extension for it though, Its starting to get to far up under there to reach, and I really don't want to crawl under the bow with it (noisy and wet, yuck).
Title: Re: Brendella tunnel
Post by: IRRebel on April 10, 2010, 10:15:20 AM
Just crawl up there with ear plugs and take it like a man Jeff!  ;D

Actually, Hemi heads can be made to fit 440 blocks pretty handily. The block only needs to be notched for the exhaust pushrod and a cut in half piece of tubing welded in. Seen that done years ago! Forget where, I'll look for the link! But would be a cool idea!

Ray, heres the ones I was talking about, Aluminum too.  http://www.stagev.com/pages/hcheads.html

I think the guy that wanted it is a bit forgetful too, or he would have picked it when he was down there to get his boat.  ::) :banghead:

I got a few more bags of foam out tonight.  The white lava rock section is still there and not moving.  I guess its time for the saw. I just hope that stuff doesnt go to far on that side.

I want to see flow numbers! And how are they compared to the other aftermarket aluminum heads like the a-460 or the blue thunders?

Id like to know the same things, haven't been able to find any reference to flow #s or even hp numbers compared to an A 460 equipped motor.  Only that "These heads will make about 100 HP more than the best P-51/SCJ head in similar builds using 460-521 cubic inches. At 600 cubic inch, expect about a 150 HP increase".

Get ahold of Austin (AHP on Skagens or Wajetboy on PB) as I think he runs theres.  Vern (CP598) is running some of the Thor Blue Thunder heads that also are supposecd to flow a ton.  They all have the dizzy on the wrong end so I'm lost............ ;D

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  ::)

The last of the foam is out.  ;D ;D ;D

The pressure washer (aka, the porta water jet) was a HUGE help.

Looks like I have some more work to do under there though.  Theres a false floor up there, I drilled a hole at the bottom of it, and there was water under it (big suprize).  :-\

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0005-1-1.jpg&hash=02b5d4dee18a60f9623e0894f4e22e40c59a0620)

Also that foam was giving alot of support to the bow, its a bit flexible now.  I'm going to do 2 bulkheads under there and change the deck support piece to 2 pieces (one over each tunnel).  Thats the way the Daytona is and its much stronger.  Like this.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FDaytona%2Fmydaytona028.jpg&hash=263a79096917f77a63d8bad4b75ef235f943c698)

I'm curious though, do you guys think the false floor is doing anything under there (strength wise) other then giving a place to put the deck support ??  Do you think its needed, if I do the 2 bulkhead idea ??
Title: Re: Brendella tunnel
Post by: propless on April 25, 2010, 10:29:01 AM
Well I talked to one of the Brendella gurus and they told me the floor under the bow is there for strength (not just for the deck support).  Aparantly it keeps the boat from splitting down the middle (we dont want that).   Looks like I'm going to be doing some major work under there.  That floor piece is under the fronts of the stringers  .   I'm going to need to sit and think about this one for a bit.  I realy wasnt planning on replacing good stringers just because of a floor piece under the bow, maybe I could cut it out around the stringers and notch the new piece to fit that way.  I dont know at this point, maybe I'll gut the whole thing and start fresh.

What did I get myself into, again.  :banghead:

Make sure you ask the Brendella gurus what you have to support and how when/if you cut that support floor out. I'm just guessing and maybe worry to much but you might have to support that with more then just the 3 or 4 point hang in order to keep it's form? I would def ask.   Roy.

maybe I could cut it out around the stringers and notch the new piece to fit that way.

There you go Proppy, just cut the old one as far from the stringers as good wood will allow, cut it into a dove tail pattern, then make your filler piece to match. Maybe use some thin aluminum under the joint to support the seam, add some stainless screws and you should be golden. I've seen a lot of old buildings with junk lumber in them fixed in a similar manner. Whatever you do, get that sucker running, I'm ready for a trip to Pine Flat, Kings River or the Mendota Slough, and you're going to be my tour guide!

Didnt do anything on the floor yet.  I spent some time removing more old paint while I think about it.  And I got the old Jacuzzi intake out the other day (what a mother@%#&$@ that was).

Removed the paint from the dash and inside edges, also got the rest of it off the transom.  Still have a bit of paint on the sides that I cant get to because of the fenders (there welded on  ::)). So that area has to wait till its off the trailer.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0009-1-1.jpg&hash=c751ed00754a60582cf6eda51f329282f7e2bd5e)

Ever seen an intake set in wood ?  :screwy:  There is (roughly) 3/8" of glass, then 3/8" wood, then a bit more glass, then a thin smidge of epoxy. I guess the wet wood swelled a bit and locked it in there, because it really didnt want to come out.  Of all the places to put wood, I dont think I can think of a worse place for it.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0007-1.jpg&hash=94a45b7a4472203a40d091c65b11f5e770cb4740)

Placed the new intake in there to see where the hull needs to be cut to.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0013-1-1.jpg&hash=4898c8ad13295cf035bd1f35327b59dca4f2f364)

And I picked these up.  I think I'll have plenty of air flow now (up to 1860 cfm).   >:D

Brendella pickle, sorry I didnt see your post until now.  Id love to see some pics of yours.  Heres the "tutorial" on posting pics.  http://www.socaljetboats.com/suggestions-support/picture-posting-instructions/
Most of the time I just use Photobucket though.

I did some work on mine again.

I got the hole cut for the intake.  For some reason I was able to get the cleanout cover out past the transom and still have 2" of hull behind the cutout (didnt need to cut through the transom).
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0024-1.jpg&hash=93e8179867bb2fce63e9016faf904fce8dec8e5f)

There was alot of cracking in the flowcoat on the floors (mainly on the keel).  I decided to see how deep it went.  grabbed the grinder and went to work,  the flowcoat down there was around 1/4" thick or more in places.  :screwy:  I guess they didnt care much about weight.  Unfortunately the cracking is down into the glass, not sure how far.  But it needs to be taken care of.  Lots of grinding and glassing to do in there.  >:(
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0014-1.jpg&hash=2f2745b74ecd59de71ee4941330f675ec9964cf7)

Then I decided to check the sponsons.  There are some places where the fuel tanks where rubbing on the floors out there (circled in red).  They rubbed almost half way through the hull. Brendella pickle, you better check this on yours.  The back brackets on the tanks mounted to the outside wall of the tunnels, letting the tanks move around just enough to do this to the bottom.  Its the verry back of the tanks.     While I was looking out there I saw a funny looking line on the bottom. Grabbed the grinder again. Found a big azz crack in the glass. didnt go through the flowcoat, and cant see in from underneath.  Must be an old repair to the bottom, either way it needs to be be taken care of too.  :banghead:
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0016-11.jpg&hash=299805047c5230c41d5da197d0711f26f3848afe)

At this point I have to quote Ralph Brunt from his getting ready for paint thread (words of wisdom !!)
WARNING...if you have a boat in this bad of shape do NOT try to repair it.... take a chain saw to it and get another hull :'(

But Im still going to fix it.  :screwy: ;D

I'd love to! Really I would. Been fighting my inner self on this since this thing even came up. But this thing came with sooo much new stuff. Pistons, cams, intakes, carbs, ignitions, much more. All of it would go in the trash or on Craigs list, for one. Two BBF blower intakes alone would cost me well over 2k!!! Let alone the drive pulleys, idlers.....Would be cool as hell, I agree, but I gotta finance this thing!  :screwy:

I have to admit, your right about that Ray. BBF blower stuff is really pricey compared to the deals out there on the Chevy stuff.  Thats why this ones gettin a Chevy (propless hangs his head in shame  :'().  No mighty BBF in this one.  :(

I'll stuff a Blower on a Ford at some point, probably. Just can't convince myself it's worth the expense on two of them in the same boat!  :sly: Kinda like Marc said, I'm probably gonna get 500 or so HP from each engine as they sit with all the new parts, Should be more than adequate on this particular boat.

:sly: Maybe a little, just to cool the blower.

No, just kidding. The problem is theres lots of stuff that can be added/done to make more power, but then you have to make the bottom end handle it ($$$$).

I do keep finding myself looking at the mech injection systems though.

Funny story, I sent a message to Brian Busby the other day about some parts and said, "now I understand how you ended up with a BA motor in the old boat".  He responded with one word, "Exactly" .

These cats up here love a shot of NOS on top of their blowers.  There's a onboard video I have around here somewhere that shows what takes place when you hit the button.  VERY cool stuff.

Well I'm back on this thing.  ::)

Billy / ironman had some extra time today so I gladly took care of that by putting his welding skills to work.  ;D  That will teach him to have a day with nothing to do.  >:D

We tackled one of the trailer issues.  Its was a bit to long to fit in the garage when theres a pump in the boat, and I didnt want to cut a hole in the dinning room wall. So I dragged it over to Billy's house this AM.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0002-1-1.jpg&hash=123874b4b04f841d22e4013d5919ca900876b989)

And we remover a bit of length from the trailer.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0005-1-2.jpg&hash=24aa104702bedf10689ddae96e8d24638c993b0f)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0004-1-1.jpg&hash=a82b98c5d07995e09e09215fbe4920e55fa49fca)

He went to work cutting some parts to fix the problem, while I supervised to make sure he didnt slack off.  >:D
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0009-1-3.jpg&hash=61c9288652ea5f206c1c4d8ef5d140764e1aec21)

Once everything was cut out and ground down to shape he slipped the new pieces in place and tacked the on.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0010-1-1.jpg&hash=46cfc622dcb6850c58f847a169242ed5f191efe7)

After that, there was alot of welding to be done.  So I went back into supervisor mode while he welded.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0013-1-2.jpg&hash=bd833bb9e39d937f81d37e0f43b5b0a108129bfa)

Here it is, all welded together, and it works.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0018-1.jpg&hash=fec40930b3ef02ce977b1a434c19fdbf28da056e)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0019-1-1.jpg&hash=999d49457e6fcc2f8951959ea466d1af51bf57dc)

After I got home, I cleaned it up a bit and shot some rattle can white on it so it wont rust for now.  I'll do a better job with the paint when the boat comes off the trailer for its bottom work, there are a few other issues with the trailer that need some help too and that will be a good time to handle those too.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0021.jpg&hash=0aff0a4b873c667eb10555e261a4694f0caa6839)

Now it'll fit in the garage without any issues (even with a pump in the boat), and the tongue is longer so when I turn a sharp corner the boat doesnt try to stick one of the forks into my tail lights.
Thanks again Billy.

Thanks for the compliments guys, Billy (ironmam) sure does nice work. And its really strong, we bounced around on it and the frame rails under the boat (5 1/2" rails) flexed before anything up front moved.

Oldsquirt, the old one is in the trash can at Billy's house.  It was bent and really worn out (sloppy).  If it was (IMO) at all usable I would get it for you, but I dont think its worth saving.

Yea  Yea, I dont see any progress pics of yours either.   :sly:

I did stop by the machine shop on my way home from work and my motor has a place in line now.  Just going to do some block clean up before it goes.

BTW,  there has been an official change of plans for power, the blower motor will be saved for a different project.  Still no E85 available around here, so I'm going to wait and see what happens with that.
Coming soon, the rebirth of the "MIGHTY BBF" , and its going to be a big boy this time.   >:D

 Just a quick update.

I finally figured out where I wanted the intake to be so I could fill in the rest of the old intake opening.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0014-1-2.jpg&hash=2a2684ac76084dcea5713b5949c8e356d2a80c4c)

Couldnt stand the HUGE, crooked, sloppy, hole in the transom for the old pump, so I had to "fix" that too.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0046-1.jpg&hash=e4af7836c869651922e5c6314ade1363b930ba21)

 Fits much better now.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0054-1.jpg&hash=20735155744ef7f8d1598b8dca6becf005809c5d)

Also did some blending inside the pump.  >:D   Intake to suction housing now fits perfect.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0006-1-8.jpg&hash=23771218cc67855d88b15518de9c64b327b9dd62)

Didnt like the huge gap around the clean out cover though,  So had to "fix" that too.   >:D  Fits perfect now and is still removable.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0041.jpg&hash=7efb718cc1462091bf799e0766836cc0b4da48a8)

Also drilled a tapped the housing for the pressure taps.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FPICT0009-1-5.jpg&hash=5671c6b9f5a52784c1be2a254f29108bc4d2be98)

Progress should move along a bit faster now that its on a dolly.  I can move it around alot easier now.

I've been neglecting this thread, sorry.

I have been working on it.  But it has been fighting back every chance it gets.  >:(

I went to fill the old holes in the stringers and ran straight into a nightmare.  Even though they looked good, and sounded good when you tapped on them.  The glass was not bonded to the wood anymore.   I got mad a did a quick cut along the bottom edges and all he glass lifted right off like a taco shell.    One side came off complete in a 12' length.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0136-1.jpg&hash=492da31f4c835754db5dc86e4b6d1b20f872af8f)

Then I smacked on the stringers with a hammer, and they fell over.  Heres all the glass of the stringers, and the stringers.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0127-1.jpg&hash=6fab055631e23257d78ee9c34c3827defb56d805)

So I started stripping the tops of the tunnels down to wood so I could set new stringers in there.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0130-1.jpg&hash=1b41aadcfa8da3be7ea208b14dbef94786abea03)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0131-1.jpg&hash=1062825dddbd599bb1cf9412b937c6d97f5cace4)

I got all the way done with one side and about 3/4 done with the other when I found another issue.  Part of the plywood was separating.   There was a split under where the stringer was and the glass was ripping the top layer of wood off the ply.  :banghead: :banghead:
So as of today,  ALL the plywood has been removed from the hull.  It is a bare fiberglass shell now except for 2 gunnel supports, and the section on the under side of the deck, but that is coming out too.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0013-1-3.jpg&hash=902895798ebfb24820f9f9b2b69de4b4107c979e)

You can see the pile of old plywood on the ground next to the boat here.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0006-1-3.jpg&hash=9959d68ba1df172e437ca64a596b64edd52a1c3f)

The good news is, I dont think theres anywhere on this thing where any more issues can be hiding.   :sly:  And I will get to learn a lot of new skills, like laminating a core back into a floor, and setting stringers, and glassing over new stringers, and flow coating, etc, etc, etc.

This is going to be a LONG, EXPENSIVE project.

Nope, sure wasn't expecting this.   :(  If I had known it was going to be this bad, I probably would have chopped it up.  But I'm this far into it, and it cant get much worse now.  Theres not much left of it.  ::)  Besides, How hard can it be ?  ;D

The updates should start coming sooner now.  Its almost time to start putting things back together.

How did you modify the cleanout plug so it fit so well?

Is it still removeable?

When I was overhauling my boat, I had second thoughts about finishing it too.

It seemed like everytime I turned around another problem would surface.

Keep at it and you will have a new boat when you are done.

Actually that was a pain in the azz.  But yea its still removable.  Inside the housing there is an alignment bump on one side (so you dont put the cover in backwards  ::)) . That had to be removed, I ground it off so the opening was completely round to start.  Then I roughed up the sides of the cover and drilled about 8 small holes in the bottom sides and taped in some brass rods so it looked a bit like a porcupine.  I cut the rods so they where about a 1/8" from the walls of the housing when the cover was in place.  The idea of the rods was to hold the epoxy in place if it ever came loose from the cover and tried to fall into the pump.  Then I wrapped the sides of the housing with aluminum foil,  bolted the cover in place,  and filled the void with epoxy.  Once it was setup it slid right out.  It took ALOT of sanding and filling to get it right, but it got there.

Later I discovered that I could have bought a cover like that (tight fitting).  Tom a JetBoatPerformance had them in stock.  :banghead:  Live and learn.  ;D

Ok,  lots of updates to do here.

I got all the wood out from under the underside of the deck, what a pain in the azz that was.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0024-1-1.jpg&hash=626b59272bea4c8a900bda603891aabcdeaee963)

Heres the pile of "extra" wood that came out.

Once all the mess was out from inside I decided to flip the hull to take care of its major glass work before going any farther.   Theres just something not quite right about seeing your boat hanging upside down in the air.  :o
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0041-1.jpg&hash=09c89ff7da5473449485fb93bdd44ac359033866)

Still had some of the old paint under there.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0046-1-1.jpg&hash=404ed43afce1c78cdb9750eef80910e93109dd09)

Started sanding it all off looking at things better and made few interesting discoveries.  It was hard to tell exactly what was going on with the bottom of this thing while it was on the trailer (or on the dolly). But it was easy to see now.   The keel is actually V shaped and it has a Delta pad.  :o
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0055-1-1.jpg&hash=2c38d1d6b6ecdfa45dad5bc957c2fd9d2e888d4a)

Heres a shot showing the angle change from the actual keel line to the Delta pad.  >:(
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0002-1-2.jpg&hash=b9f517dff0bb4c533be9ccb3a8f5628dc699a20f)

And one showing the huge hump/angle change on the bottoms of the sponsons.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0060-1-2.jpg&hash=8b84d84174a104ddd3c508f3d802818633deb236)

I dont like any of this !!  So its going to ALL be changed.  ;)

I spent a lot of time on the phone with some of the gurus, talking about angles and tunnel depths and how the newer hulls are compared to this thing.  It took a lot of planning, measuring, checking angles, over and over and over, but I finally came up with a decent plan to update the bottom.
Its going to loose the Delta pad and get the bottoms of the sponsons re angled to work with the new keel angle.  This should help the hull run at a better angle through the water.  It will open up the tunnels at the transom a bunch so it wont trap as much air under the bow (let the air flow under the hull better).

I decided to start with the keel mods first.

I stripped it down to glass to get it ready for the work.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0010-1-5.jpg&hash=5a477c9af089c68fe8d44fdaf49d6411b505f7f4)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0011-1-2.jpg&hash=9fc3d83d40fd3308004e06e1fd991689ae8749fe)

Then it was cuttin time.  Took me a long time actually get up the nerve to do this.  But I figure this stupid old pile of junk was hanging on to edge of a dumpster with one finger when I found it, so I might as well get creative with it.
I cut along the sides of the center pod and wedged the back down to create a straight keel line.  I spent a few days looking at it, and measuring everything 10 times until I was happy with it.  I also filled the old intake mounting holes from the bottom, got rid of the recess for the factory ride plate and did a little glass work on the area that I filled in for the pump set back.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0035-1-1.jpg&hash=a0bbee16a018e417f171dc3436acd21bdab381d2)
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0034-1-3.jpg&hash=81e34f20d408cd44a6057db447b2678dc988d477)

Then I put a couple layers of glass on it to hold it together.  Now I can pull the wood I used to hold it in place out of there and start glassin and grindin till its built back up to the right thickness and straight again.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0006-1-9.jpg&hash=3d37dab168718ae43b801713ab39a35c34e7d3e3)

Thats where I'm at for now, its out in the garage with a heater under it to help the glass set up nice.   Once I get it built back up to be strong again  I can put a rounded shape under there for a round keel intake.   Then its on to the sponsons issues.   ???

Finally got some progress pics for everyone.  :D

The keel / center pod is done (ish), it will still need some blending and a final straightening once the intake is set.  But for now its good to go.  ;D ;D    It feels good to finally start to see some real progress on this stupid thing.  This is the first area that I can actually look at and see that there might be some hope for this old lump of glass.

Now its time to start chopping into the sponsons.  :o
Title: Re: Brendella tunnel
Post by: propless on February 19, 2012, 01:36:43 PM
I decided to tackle another project before jumping into the sponson issue.

I had to make a shoe for this stupid intake.  Its a different size than a standard shoe (longer), so I had to make it myself.  I figured I would just start out with a flat shoe and see where it puts me.   Gotta start somewhere.

I cleaned up the shoe pad, it was a bit corroded and not exactly flat anymore.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0055-1.jpg&hash=5416718d6d5b29a5fe587e748e6c83a522c7eea6)

Then I looked around in the spare parts pile and found a piece of 1/2" Aluminum.  It was a piece of the old set back OB mount from the Daytona, so yea, I finally found a use for an OB part.  >:D
Marked out what I needed and broke out the precision cutting tools.  ::)

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0056-1-2.jpg&hash=790c17c70ba492e578d48b3176c2a831a5f81a03)

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0057-1.jpg&hash=ec20529b719c85e4c4187a1ac7044fb60fefbcb0)

Got it cut and cleaned up a bit.  Then kinda guesstimated where to cut for the leading edge.  Had to make a guess as to where the angle from the inside of the intake would need to end up.  I'm sure theres some kind of math to figure it out, but who has time for that.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0058-1.jpg&hash=a1c54f4a8ac4981e0f1a782fe54846cc26b6bfd8)

Got the mounting holes drilled (mostly in the right spots  >:() and counter sunk the two front ones.  A couple of the rear holes where slightly off, but nothing drastic.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0061-1-1.jpg&hash=56d8f014cc81dda3b2471a2e9079bfc22ef3a9fe)

Then grabbed the grinder and sander and ground out/blended the inside angle to match the intake. My guesstimate was fairly close, had to grind it back a bit, but thats better than cutting it to short.  ;)

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0062-1.jpg&hash=fae52cf0c804d6faaa7fdf97ea0900c083a53eda)

All done, almost.  Still need to cut the pad for the ride plate, and do a bit of blending at the rear of the intake fins.

 (https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0064-1.jpg&hash=85e56ee257adcf326b6239edf35c547a7a153e7b)

Skills ??  Me ??  HA HA HA thats a good one !!  ;D ;D  You should see me edging the lawn, looks like a 4th of July fireworks show.   :o

I attacked one of the sponsons today.  The plan was to drop the rear of the sponson (about 3/4"), and raise the bottom of the sponson at the dash area (about 2"), to create a more modern angle difference between the sponsons and the keel.  As well as to get rid of the huge hump under there at the dash area.

I made my first main cuts and the damn hull sprung open and twisted all around like a wet noodle.  :banghead: :banghead:   I just sat there looking at it and almost cried.  It almost found its way into a dumpster today.   It took me about 6hrs of twisting, bending, supporting, cutting and screwing in supports to get it back into the shape I wanted.  Still more work to do, maybe another full day before its ready to tab it back together.  But its getting there.

 The first cuts

I did some grinding and rearranging of things today.  The angles where a bit off last night, I actually had to drop the front of the sponson back down 1/2".   Its all held together with wood blocks and metal straps for now.  I'm going to let it sit for a few days and just look and measure for a bit before I start glassing, I dont want to have to cu it back apart.  ::)

I have a question, and seriously hoping it is not a stupid one...... :screwy:

What is keeping the deck from distorting beyond recognition....The intact side?  It just seems to me you may have a difficult time making the deck sides match...I would frame it up in a jig so that things don't get...Well, unrecognizable... :-\

Thats actually a good question.  And I dont know why the deck is holding its shape, but it is.  It actually holds its shape better than the bottom.  I did have braces from the floor to support it when I first made the cuts, but it stayed in shape without them.  The bottom is another story,  what twisted around so bad was the tops of the tunnels.  I guess because there flat.  I think the deck is fairly thick over the sponsons (unlike the center section) and it has a pretty good angle/slope/curve out there.  I'm sure all that has alot to do with why it held its shape.

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi239.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff97%2Fpropless%2FBrendella%2FPICT0052-1.jpg&hash=e642639e66dfa03eee942cc1e4dd9e80abf02789)

I think they might have been running low on glass when they built the bottom of this one.  Heres a shot of how thick the inside walls of the sponsons are up front.  I know it looks like it says 3/4" on the wrench, but thats a 1/4" wrench. :o   This is one of the reasons I'm going to add the second bulkhead under the bow.

My dumb ass didn't put a rev chip in my 7al box because I had it set at 7200 in the ecu. well I guess Fast efi ecu's "fuel air spark technology" are not fast enough for a 1200hp high revving jet that pops out or catches air in the pump. expensive lesson on my part. to top it off when the boat popped back in, the force difference at that rpm not only loosen all the intake bolts, hand cover bolts, it cracked all around the shoe and intake on the bottom. Ive been staring at it a lot and am wanting a cat, tunnel, gull-wing, or a very fast pontoon boat but cant afford one unless propless decides to let his finger lose, lol jk. cant make a decision on that. Ill wait till after some dyno time. that monster gives me a tickle in my pants every time it fires up,as well as scares me a bit till I some seat time. Good to see a lot of you still posting. Ill wait till after some dyno time. that monster gives me a tickle in my pants every time it fires up,as well as scares me a bit till I some seat time. Good to see a lot of you still posting. Nice job on the site changes Brad.

Good to see u on here again Jimmy. I havent been on here for a long time either until about a week or so ago.

LOL, no worries about the thread jack, its normal around this place.  ;)

But seriously, your gunna need a different boat.   You cant just toss 2000hp in a normal boat, you'll shoot your eye out.  ::)

Actually, no.  I got side tracked with a different boat for the summer, and now I'm trying to decide wether to work on this one or the other project I picked up recently for next summer.

Lol well good luck with the decision. If you choose the new project hopefully it isn't as tweaked as this one was.

It has a few challenges, but its not nearly as much of a project as this thing.   ;D

Someday I'll get back on this one.  ::)
