Engines?

I have a boat in mind, and trying to plan out what I'm going to do with it this winter. The boat is a 77 Tahiti closed bow 18' boat. It has an old built ford 460 as the power plant. I'm looking to go bigger and better. This is along the lines of what I'd like, I'm looking at crate motors because I don't have the time to tear down and rebuild one. Is the price worth it for being bran new? Thoughts?

Not in my opinion. Find a reputable engine builder in your town could probably make at least that much power for less than half of that

Save your money and find someone to build it. Send it to cnc motorsports or something for half that.

Cars engines aren't designed to be boat engines. You'll either take it apart to get the proper clearance before you use or after you tried to use it and snapped valves etc.

As others have already said I'd pass too. You'd have to tear it down and have it clearanced to run in an open cooling setup anyways. Some have been lucky enough to make a car motor live in a jet boat but longevity isn't likely without the proper precautions.

Find a reputable shop/board member and have one built to your spec's.

Not sure what you're running as far as a pump but all the power in the world isn't going to help you if your not moving it efficiently through the jet.

This engine also appears to be based on the 351W which means that most if not all of the accessories from the 460 will not fit. So on top of the cost of the engine, you're going to have to purchase mounts, exhaust, alternator bracket, flex plate and possibly the coupler.

Not a good value when you can get a stroker 460 with about 80-90 more cubic inches for the same amount of money.

Well then, i know that a great setup should be less than 8k. That's a start. I don't care if the old 460 parts fit or not, I'll just replace them, have the 460 torn down, inline bored for the crank, cam, decks planed, cylinders checked lifters checked ect and the block ex-rayed for cracks. I'll keep all the paperwork and probably turn it over for a profit to help fund my monster build (hopefully)

Just curious. If you're willing to drop $16k on a motor, then another $2-3k on making it fit, why not gather all those funds-including the cost of buying the 77 Tahiti-and get yourself a badass turnkey boat? Imagine what you could pick up for $25k.

Am I the only one thinking this? The man is looking for good advice here.

You could buy nicks cp (with a ford motor) for the same amount of money your talking about. And the boat is brand new only 11hrs on it.

Pony boy-

With the horsepower you want, you need a hull and set-up that will handle it. A Tahiti may not be it.

Both the above boats have some SERIOUS hardware. One is capable of 110 mph+.

Find a hull/combo that is more user friendly, and is capable of HP upgrades.

These are squirt boats, and there's a learning curve. I've seen rookies get into trouble all by themselves with 350-400 hp.

I've scared a few people with a 500 hp Day Cruiser at 57 mph...110 Is not something to be taken lightly. I've never been over 82 or so.
