Fin install

I decided to install my fin today and what a load of shit that turned into .

First I decided to level the boat off to make sure I knew where the balance point was and it was way far forward. I decided to just put it where another Saguaro jet had it . Easy enough right . WRONG ! I cut the floor open and then BAM ! An enormous bulge of foam . Fukin great !

I started to chip the foam out while my brother was cleaning the fin and I would venture to say that there was probably at least 100 lbs. of sopping wet foam under the floor . Upon closer inspection the boat has full length stringers under the floor . I took a couple of pictures and I'll post them up later . I'm just now getting around to the clean up end of foam removal project.

About that foam, I feel your pain brother !!!! My trash man still gives me dirty looks, but lighter is FASTER !!

If you have full stringers do you need to put a floor back in there ?

So are you going to remove all the foam and flooring and rerig the boat with out all the BS in it ?

That fin is about 100lbs also.

All I did was cut a rectagular hole in the floor . I originally thought all it had was a floor so the entire floor was not removed .

All the foam was removed and after moving the trash can there was at least 100 lbs of sopping wet foam .

The boat is going to get completely gutted after the ming race , rerigged , and if I'm really good the rest of the year , Santa is gonna bring me a paddle for the pink boat .

To give it the spanking it so desperatly deserves .......

the trailing edge of the fin should be no further forward than 47-50" from the transom. This is on a jet, not an outboard or v-drive, they have other numbers that are more critical to their set up. jets are a different animal.

Plus you don't want to use a fin that's not the right size, I've never seen one yet that you can mount out of the box.

Too far forward on the mount and the boat will bow steer, too far back and it will starve the pump in a tight turn. This was passed on to my by Roger Weiman through his many decades of setting up jets. If you have another boat like your's to copy, you're ahead of the game.

Is 3" gonna kill me . I can still move it back about 1 - 2" before I'm up against the bilge bulk head . It's at 53" right now .

Joshes "turn fin" on his Beezer is at exactly 46 inches (forward from transom) his jet is set back 6" ,the boat handles like a Formula 1 .... Tom

Thanks Josh. I'm just curious as to how they are mounted and if they improve handling. When you look at your Project Miller, other than the color and the engine, you're seeing my boat. Greg

Here they are, this is a cast Glenwood fin that has been "dropped though" as oposed to being bottom mounted, its 4" deep.

Picture? Not a chance, sorry no special secret just buried under a subfloor and a gas tank. I actually didn't install it , It was on the boat when I bought it. But it's bedded in epoxy much like a jet intake and secured with countersunk bolts.
