Title: Help Me I Need A Hull!!!
Post by: jack.townsend on February 28, 2014, 11:02:23 AM
I bought a 1973 horizon 17ft jet boat. it came with a 455 olds in it and shitty interior. I had the upholestry redone and bought some ott headers for the boat and then found a small crack by the runner, after further investigating and sanding i found catastrophic damage. So my hull is shit and i spent 300$ invested in the hull and 1500 in headers and upholestry. Im only 18 and im way over my head. :screwy: Im eager to get into the jet boat community but now i cant float! Please if anyone has a spare hull for dirt cheap or nothing ill come get it i have a trailer i just have to strip my boat and throw the hull away :banghead: I  need help bad i met a cool dude on this forum and he told me that the jet boat community is strong and too see if i cant swing a deal. im trying to get a boat put together so i can make it to the parker meet. If you have any ideas, hulls, or good vibes send them my way!!! My Name is JACK/RED my number is (619) 985-7407 im in san diego thanks fellas

if you use the search you'll find this topic has been discussed previously...

from tom @ jbp

Quote from: jbp
The similarities are huge and many parts will exchange and interchange within the two jets , the intake , for example has the same basic footprint as the Berk 12j a,b,c&g but a few bolt holes need relocating to make the swap , the biggest down side to the Bayjet is the bowl and a simple upgrade to a Bayjet is a Berk or aftermarket bowl (worth instant MPH) call if we can help or answer questions Tom

Exactly... Nothing good is cheap. And nothing cheap is good... Even more so with boats. The cheaper you get a hull the more work and money you're going to have to put into it to make it nice. You're pretty much going to have to scratch up a grand to 1500 to come up with anything remotely descent and even then you better look over it with a fine tooth comb. But seriously don't expect any show pieces for a good deal...

I'll even give you the title for it. Fix the crack and have a badass boat haha. Here's some pics. And I'll sell you the bay jet pump too! 200$ firm!

Okay.. After to talk into some of my buddies up at Elimenator... They have talked me Into fixing my hull. They hooked me up with some fiberglass, resin and catalyst. And showed me how to do it.. I'll post some pics up of the repair and see if I don't fuck it up to bad haha :screwy:

I also new a hand with my headers. I had logs on my 455 and got some bassets and hooked them all up but I need to know how to adjust the outlet valve(going out of the transom) and my intake valve going through my pump. Here's some pics of after I hooked it up

just a quick tip... avoid using a zip tie on a rubber hose.  you can restrict flow when you squeeze the hose, also the zip tie can dig into the hose and with vibration it can cut it and you'll have a leak.  fuel, water, etc...    if you need to secure a hose, use a cushion clamp.

theres a ton of help here as far as fixing your hull.  post pix of the process... we love pix.

Zips aren't bad if they are free floating. But if your mounting to fixed locations then a cushion is required.

Post by: jack.townsend on March 02, 2014, 09:53:31 AM
I have the zip ties super loose there just there to keep it in the same location but I'll look into these clamps so it's not so ghetto haha.

Anybody know how to adjust my water cooling system?

Okay Okay... Heres the deal... My fiberglass patch worked!!!Heres what happened the gate valve on the intake of my pump for my cooling system jammed and it was open all the way so after i took off the trailer and got under load the headers started spewing water and filled the bilge pretty quick so i hauled ass into shore and went home and free'd the valve... then... i drove all the way back with my girl to help and she drove while i adjusted the valve... so fixed that problem... and my motor ran like a fucking champ!!! i realized i have two rivets that failed on my rub bar... so i shoved a fucking rag in it and ran that bitch for a while ;D Soo im gonna replace the rivets tommorow and silicone them a little just to make sure there sealed and then testing again this weekend 8) IM super stoked that the thing floats and the motor runs!!! Ive only driven a jet boat 2 times and its sketchy how low it is in the water but its rad! you just cant slow down quick becuase it will flood it! after i scared myself a couple times i started to get a hang of it and my woman digs it!!!

im really trying to find something with a pump... just because mine is so weak i want something with some nuts. The dana is rad but i think that the gel is gonna get way too hot and thats gonna be a bitch too clean. That Challenger is rad though and for 400 is that a solid deal? i could just use my trailer and through my seats and motor in there or i can have that hull and find a pump and start piecing it together slowly i just dont have the room :banghead:

I went out on the lake again today and it was rad!!! Unlike last time there were actually some other jet boat guys out there instead of old dudes in there fishing dingys. I went through all the rough water pretty slow and side ways to absorb the hard hits(which i need to work on to make a smoother ride... if you have advice please share)  but i did hit hard a couple of times and it scared the shit out of me!... but the repair held up solid. Its just id rather get a new hull so im not worrying about cracking it again and a nicer pump so i can go faster >:D My bayjet is such a POS!!! But it still cruises! at like 3500 rpm im running about 35-40mph which isnt bad but id like something more sturder and a stronger hull. IM still looking for a deal i just need to make some room. I seem to be burning a little oil(i dont know if thats usual) but i might get a spare block to start building to learn and to give you guys a reason to come onto scjb and help me haha ;D I adjusted those basset headers better too.. there misting a little at idle and there not leaking at all at cruising speed - hauling ass speed 8) Im running around 150 as water temp which seems decent? Other than that its tits! haul ass and be loud through the canyons and blast the stereo on the sand bar and hangout all day... Fucking PARADISE.

Thanks for all the help fellas especially DREW And OMAR!

Although great advice from beer jet, do you really wanna be that guy that sells a boat with a patch job that even you are afraid of coming apart. Not saying it will but you never know and you don't know what the buyer may do if it happens to him right after he buys it. One of the reasons when I was selling my boat I sent the link to my build thread so the interested party could see what was done to the bottom of my boat before buying.

Either way enjoy it while it still floats

No I'm not gonna sell this hull... I'm going to sell the trailer and inform the buyer that the hull is junk but they need to either fix it way better or scrap the POS... If I can find just another hull and pump I'm gonna use my trailer and take this hull to the dump. I'm trying to hold out for that saguaro but I need to save up more. And man up and learn how to pull the motor set a pump and wire that bitch up.

I have a complete Berk JC-A for sale. Ran it all last summer on my 20' mini day 50-55 mph all day. $400 could use a freshening but it runs.

Yes the trailer is included and yes the back has been glassed up. It's all new waiting for your pump.

It's quarter stringer. The hull is in good shape. No stress cracks or big scratches. Will need a light color sand a buff but it's a solid hull

Whats up Fellas! Ive been busy with work and other bullshit... I'm still on a quest for another Hull but my old POS is still floatin so thats good!!! Motor is burning a little oil but other than that its fine, i do have a small air leak on the intake manifold that i need to replace the gasket(it bubbles a little). So im getting around too that.. Ive taken it out a couple times to the local el cap lake in san diego, even on a couple of rough days and the repair held up decent. BUT... i do still need a new hull!!! I also have a question for you.. what do i lube my pump with? is it even necessary? I have an old POS bayjet pump but it has a zirc grease fitting on the top of it. What grease do I put in it, is it gonna help performance, how much grease exc exc... Thanks fellas! i couldnt make it out to the last SCJB meet because work and the weather was wack.. but i hope to be at the next one for sure!

One way to do it is to get some fine steel wool and start rubbing.

Just run passenger tires, they are nearly half the cost of trailer tires. And pretty much any tire place should have a decent selection in stock for 14-16" rims.

From what I know that's not coming off. Just about to do one on my t deck and it's not coming off. Supposed to buy a new one with the new rack...regarding your batteries most guys mount them in the back one on each side of the stringers I'd say mount them under the bow dead center right next to each other. Clean no battery look when you take a peak at the motor. Just my .02. Don't mark my words on the rack setup I could be wrong. That's at least what I've been told. Pretty sure one of the old timers will chime in soon and help out.

Stick it between the stringer and the pump if it fits if not put it on the outside of the stringer. You don't want to pay for 10-15 feet of battery cables let alone deal with routing them and tripping over them. Keep it simple

There should be a bolt there and once you take that bolt off it slides off. Might take couple blows with a mallet to break it loose.  A puller works good. I just did my steering 2 weeks ago and all I had to do was take that bolt off and some elbow grease and it slid off

Is there a specific puller I should use or will a gear puller work?

I also have another question I'm redoing the rivets on the rub rail and I want to know if I should put a sealant of some sort behind the rub rail. There's a couple spots where you can visibly see the separation from the top mold to the bottom mold. Any suggestions? Or should I just leave it?

I relocated the shifter in my new boat. I need some tips on how to correctly mount the cable and set it right. Is there a thread or any tips? I couldn't find one in a search

With all the changing and moving of stuff, you should post pics of what you're putting in the boat first so we can point you in the right direction .....

Alright fellas. I installed the transom caps, installed new water outlets on the transom, my gauges, steering, flip switch panel, and my shifter.

Now heres my problem with the shifter.. IM missing the clamp that holds the cable in the place. If anyone knows where i can get a clamp and what it looks like or anything?

My other thing is that my motor plates are to short so Im gonna extend them and drill out new holes for it. No big.

Then here comes the fucked part... So i plug and chugged my new gauges so i hope theyre hooked up right... I have 2 buttons that are hooked up to the wiring harness so i have to find out what those are. The wiring harness is connected to a labeled mini circuit breaker or something. So the install to the motor should be easy :-[

And heres my other other problem... I run two batteries off a perko switch. But i dont know how to hook the batteries up correctly and all the other motor hookups.  Any help or diagrams would be appreciated .

And heres the really fucked part... Another scjb member sold me a motor that he said was a 455 when in fact it was a 403... He wont make it right and isnt gonna refund me or take the motor back. So im fucking stuck with it. I took my distributor off my old 455 and put it on my 403 so that means i have to re do the timing and set the motor and carb all up... So if theres anyone in san diego that could help or lend a hand or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys!!!
