I had assembled about 15 motors after that Ed Hale's did the block work after he had passed, they all cleared the clearence and roundness test.

Thanks for all of the kind words  ;)  Very bad hangover today  :banghead:  :P  The block work should come around to a hair over $400, hot tanked, mag'd, bored, line honed, decked (if req'd), checking my used pistons, new cam bearings installed, new brass freeze plugs installed, new oil plugs installed. Sounds like a lot of work for $400. I read on a different board that Ed Hale's shop does all of Total Performances block machining and no one chimed in to disagree.  ???  My keyboard is having some serious issue's because of that "drool".  ;D

UNDONE

Re: Mach 1
« Reply #388 on: March 16, 2008, 06:29:54 PM »
Aside from the cost of gas to get it here, I've had Jim Grubbs Motorsports in Valencia, CA do all of the above to 4 blocks. First two he charged $160 each. Second two were $100 each. Did a great job and he stands by his work 100%. He used to build the engines for Teague Custom Marine until Teague had enough lessons taught to them on how to build their engines and Bob started building them himself.

I've had two friends that had something go wrong with their complete engines from Jim. The first was overheated at doing an 11,000 RPM run with a 500 N/A 4.6L ford- NOT JIM'S FAULT. Jim replaced it at his cost.

The second was a small block Chevy that pulled out a stud. Again, a common problem with a standard 350 Chevy making lots of power. Jim just finished replacing it at his cost. He stands by his work whether or not it's failure was his fault. A lot of big names use him.

Sounds like a good place to go for machine work UNDONE.

I got a call from Ed Hale Machine today and the block is ready to be picked up. That means the pistons were all checked and they're good to go. Tomorrow I'll do just that. I also won a pair of valve covers today on eBay. Brand new and exactly what I was looking for. Less than $75, shipped. I'm looking at a more reasonable cam, the current one is around 650 lift and 260 dur at 050.

If anyone knows of a cheap way to plumb for alcohol I'm all ears. I have that MFI, it's got a lot of gadgets and doodads that came with it - all of which need to be plumbed.

My tanks also need to have fuel return lines added to them (1 each). What's the right way to do that? I'm concerned of an explosion welding on the fuel tanks, I have never welded on a fuel tank...

Sounds like you got a good deal for all that block work. Total Performance charged me $480 for the same work on one of my 340's. And they DO their own machinework there.

Sounds like alot of cam, hope you have some bitchin heads to help it out

I used to inspect many blocks that came from Ed Hale. He used to do all our block work other than decking and line honing, that is what I did lol. He mainly just bored them and hot tanked them because we didn't have their machines. So I can't speak for all of the work, but as far as bores go he was OK, nothing perfect or outstanding, but definetely runable. Out of probably 40 blocks I had checked over during assembly or shipment I don't think I found one that was soo bad we had to send it back. Have sent back many cranks to Beans Crankshafts though. And when my block was bored at Total Performance, I was more than happy with the job they did, as far as bore alignment, main cap alignment, and sizing went. They were pretty darn on the money. I didn't have an accurate way of checking the deck at my house though so I'm not sure if it was good or not.

I think Rod's best bet is to buy some Measuring tools, mics, dialbore guages, and dial indicatiors on a magnetic base. Because you ALWAYS have to check over what the machine shop did.

Lol did you take your crank to Beans? If it's just a polish job you should be good with them, turning and custom chamfers and crank journals is where he gets sketchy
