Just because I was questioned about my logic (you know who you are) ;-)
By extending the drive line, two things are accomplished.
The first is that the longer drive line assembly will allow less aggressive shaft angles.
Second, it moves the engine forward and away from the pump intake (which is angled) and the pump shaft is at a 3° upward angle away from the transom, so theoretically, the farther forward you go, the lower the engine becomes compared to the pump shaft, even if the engine stays the same height.
