After about 6 months of searching I found a decent deal on a boat that needs slight tlc my buddy is picking it up right now. I work out of state so I sent him to get it. Its a 1970 rogers cyclone 455 tunnle ram dual 660s basstes and a berkly jet. Don't know much more yet hope to have it in the river on memorial.  So questions my are the seller said it was a half stringer but I thought all rogers were full?  Is this a early version?  Is it a bad year?  Read great things about rogers so I was excited to get one. What should I look for problem wise? Are there any areas prone to stress cracks?  How can I tell if the motor is one of the early "better" 455s or if a junkyard car pos? And what else should I be looking for I'm very new school me please.

The cyclones were 3/4 stringer. As long as it is the 17'6" hull. The 16'6" hulls are 1/4 stringer.
As for the 455 Ka heads were marine heads. I don't remember the code for the block.

First off welcome to the site. I don't know much about the Rogers hull but I know about the 455 olds motors. One thing you should ask the po is if he opened up the return flow for the oil returning back to the pan. Olds are known for burning up bearings from lack of oil returning to the pan. Another thing is if the heads are Ka heads then there the marine heads which is what you want. If the passage ways for the oil have not be opened up I wouldn't stick my foot in it for more then 5 seconds and keep an eye on that oil gauge. Otherwise good luck and welcome to the addiction

Po doesn't know any info on the motor. Boat was sold in 1970 with a 390hp 455 according to my research so I'm hopeing it hasn't been swaped out for a junk yard car motor.

Have no idea how to post pics from my phone at work. Give me a cell numberand I'll text them. Buddy is headed home with the boat right now. Got it for 1800 paint is rough interior and gauges are new. Needs a fwd reverse cable. The gas pedal mounted and the tanks secured but she fired right up and sounded good.

Pump is a 12 jb it doesn't have a jetavator or a place diveter or anything. Motor appears to be a marine casting full malory ignition setup dual 660s no clue the internals. Was told they were 390hp from the factory in 1970.  Hope she will run mid 60s if I can squeeze 67 or 68 out of her ill be the fastest in my group.

I'm pretty sure a 12JB is a split bowl, I think it's a JC but I could be wrong

Yeah its the bellflower one.  Sent a buddy to look at it. He said it was a lil rough and needed a lil tlc but it sounded healthy and  offered 1800.  Figured I wasn't gonna find another rogers that cheap. With out just calling me stupid can you explain why it was a mistake to buy it?  Only other boats I found  under 3500 were not even close to what I wanted.
I'm new to boats so if you know something I don't about it let me know. But go easy on me I'm super excited and really dontwant my bubble bursted

Haha...  That's his signature that attaches to every post he makes, he wasn't calling you stupid...  But that's some funny sh!t right there!!  From the pic of the pump it doesn't look like a split bowl but it could just be an optical illusion

No, reading thru previous posts it's something done to a boat but I'm not really sure what it is...  So if someone can explain what capping is and why he (or myself) would need to do it that would be great

I'm no expert by anymeans but if you cap it you are eliminating the rub rail and making it as though it is one solid hull this is what we are gonna do to the kachina it looks super clean

My main plan for the boat is to do the bare minimum to make it run and hopefully drive the hell out of it all summer.

This site and the great family of people on it will be your new best friend!!  Reading previous posts will help you learn a lot and still not know anything  haha  From what I understand (reading as many old posts as I can) the bowls are interchangeable so it might have been a JB originally but at some point in the last 44 years it could have been swapped to a JC bowl for whatever reason
