That hose that I screwed into the spark plug hole and hooked to the air compressor to hold the valves up when i took the springs off was a god send, lol. If you smack the end of the valve with a hammer lightly it sounds like a gun shot, heh.

Been running that same cam for quite some time. Very happy with it, makes power everywhere and works well in many applications, has over 100+hrs on it and still measures to pretty close of the first time I measured it.

Hey Andy .
Those freeze plugs are supposed to come out.
I dont know what that grey stuff is but IF and WHEN your block freezes, the "freeze plugs" will pop out allowing for expansion.
Did I just waste my breathe  ???

beerjet, not trying to step on your toes here, but you are only partially correct. The term "freeze plug" is not 100% accurate, they are actually called Welch plugs and were actually never designed to come out when the engine freezes, they were called freeze plugs because they used to use this type of plug for irrigation pumps and systems for farming.

9 times out of 10 when the freeze plugs pop out, the block is fuked, they will break right down the lifter valley.

And maddog, as for the grey goop, sometimes less is more bro   ;)

Git er done!!

GT--
It never really made sense to me that those plugs would pop out just at the right time to keep an iron block from freezing/cracking. However, I've had them come out twice--an olds after a very cold winter (90/91) and last year, a BBC, after storing the boat inside, but up at Shaver for the winter. I noticed the problem the first time out in the following spring. I had to replace them both times, but no damage to either block. According to your probability, there must be 18 poor suckers out there with cracked blocks. Maybe I should head for Vegas.

That's what I would do  LOL, were they brass or steel?  very seldom would a block survive if the plugs had enough pressure on them to pop out, I'm betting the block was not full of water and you totally lucked out.

In the early nineties when I had a shop in Gilroy, we replaced over 170 marine engines due to the frost, with the majority of them being small and big block Chevrolet's and some Fords, very few Oldsmobiles...those rockets are built like brick poop shacks   ;)

But seriously, they're called Welsch plugs...

I was told when I was in automotive school that when they cast the block they use sand casts. Due to the fact that the block is cast around sand, alot of it is left inside the engine block, and so holes are cast into the block, in the low points of the water and oil jackets so that when they get the engines out of the cast they can high pressure wash them out and get all the sand out, and they stick the plugs into it to keep your water from running out, lol also they are supossed to pop before freezing, but I gooed the hell out of them because we are forcing high pressure water into our engine blocks when we use them for jet boat use, most likely more pressure than it would see even under the pressure that a sealed cooling system would generate so I didnt want them coming out. Plus if one comes out at the river im screwed lol.

You do realize that the water come in the engine is coming from the low pressure side of the pump and that you control how much water pressure is is flowing in and out of the block. You are going to blow a head gasket before you blow those plugs out under normal jet boating use...

lol i know but they have been known to come out, especially if they were really old, brittle or installed incorrectly. HEH one popped out on my friends 460 right as he stepped on the gas one weekend. Thank god for rubber expanding plugs.  But yea I didnt want mine to pop out, and I had to replace em all, because i had to take the old ones out to wash all the damn sand and dirt out of the engine. Got about a gallon and 1/2 of solid dirt out of it. No wonder it overheated even when hooked to the garden hose. But that was when I first got it and didnt really know what it had been subjected to. :-D

lol I wish i knew, what probably happened was they would put the reverse gate down and give it gas stirring up the sand and letting it suck up right into the jet. I got a bad ass sand strainer now, but i wish it had it on there before lol. When i took the threaded plugs out of the head no water came out, i had to break the sand/crap seal with a flatblade.

slow down Question Did you check the spring pressure , and the  installed height on springs I see you have duel springs and spring cups, Most time we leave out inter springs for cam break in . I would use off road oil to break in cam high zinc. And are you going to run roller rockers you will need to index your push rods with new cam and you should degree cam and check piston to valve clearance. better safe now than later. just my o2
