hot rod looks good but man o man my screen shows some overspray on the springs and intake area and i would like to know why red, just asking because most are red or blue??????? ::)  thanks o guru

Yeah there's a little bit of overspary, a rag and some good chemicals  ;D  will take care of that.

A firend's jet boat engine is blue, mines a Chevy so that ain't going to work for me, another's is grey which looks cool but "modern", another's is black (hi marcsrollin) and I don't particularily like that. I was going to go with Chevy Orange but then realized that red goes with the hull's red stripes real well. There you go, RED.  ;D

Ya' gotta read this shit!

So marcsrollin and I took my jet boat's carb down to my carb guy to get it assessed and maybe drop it off for a rebuild. I also took a lifter down to the guy figuring he could tell me in a couple of easy for him seconds if it were a solid or hydraulic lifter.  ;)

First was the assessment, it's a Holley 4150 800 cfm mech secondary carb, excellant for my 454 with 10ish to 1 compression ratio. Carb was (qoute) "looks like it just came back from the war". I asked him if it was big enough for my engine, 454, 10ish to 1 comp, oval port, big valve, unknown cam, which he said it was perfect for it. Excellant!  ;D

So then I showed him my lifter and he said it was cupped so bad (worn) he could drink water out of it. My engine needs a new cam and lifters.  :'(

So we get back to my house, and we're looking at the engine, talking about the worn out cam and lifters and  f**k   it, damnit, pull the heads off and see what you got.

We ladies and gentlemen, my 454 is actually a 468  ;D , AND it has dome pistons in it which means its got more than 10ish to 1 compression  ;D , AND those domed pistons are forged Sealed Power pistons made at the same plant as forged TRW pistons  ;D  ;D , AND the flockin thing has a forged crank in it  ;D  ;D  ;D , holy crap! The cylinders do have a super slight ridge on the tops but nothing excessive at all, I've seen much worse cylinders and run excellant. The cylinders show honing marks at the bottom of the cylinder but not at the top, judging by the ridges and the grease I'd say I have a car motor broken in well enough for a boat engine  ;D . So once I put a Schneider DB2 (I think) cam in it I'm going have a bad assed long block of a 468. I am stoked! The rods are cast and show no numbers or markings. ? .

So now I'm thinking of ditching the single four barrell tunnel ram and getting serious with the mother effer  ;D  ;D  ;D  maybe a shot of NOS would do the trick...

With those pistons and a 106cc head chamber it should be 10.25:1 compression but he's running 427 vette heads with a 101cc head chamber so were still not clear on the compression ratio. Any body have any ideas on what the true ratio would be? We need to know so we put the right fuel in it!

I just figure out that the block was made on Oct., 6, 1971 and that particular block was made from 1972 to whenever. I also figured out that it's a "crate engine" that came with 2 bolt mains, mine has 4 bolt mains.

I have ordered a Holley Blue electric fuel pump and regulator, a gear drive to replace the timing chain, and a new carb feed line and fuel pressure gauge. I really need to order the cam.

I got my used off of eBay Dooley oil pan today.

The cam I was recomended to get is a JB2, not a DB2. Maybe JB stands for jet boat? I went on Schneider's website and the only list a JB3 and a JB4. I'm going down to Schneider cams (in San Diego) tomorrow.  ;D
Title: Re: One small step closer
Post by: hotrod56cars on March 09, 2007, 04:28:58 PM
Yeah, the Schneider JB1 camshaft was replaced by the JB3 and the JB2 was replaced by the JB4. JB does stand for Jet Boat. I'm going with the JB4. I wish I could find out my exact compression ratio, shouldn't be this difficult with a BBC. Guesstimated HP is 475 to 525. I've been told by 2 different shops that my engine could have a minimum of 100 more HP with rect. port heads. I can't afford that.  :(

But since my original intention is to get the boat to go 60 mph, I think 475 to 525 should be able to do that.   ;)

What do you think?

I'm spending the afternoon today prepping the engine for parts arrivals.

I'm waiting for a gear drive, head studs (the freakin' thing was missing a head bolt and a few of the head bolts were only in the block about 3/8"!), camshaft and lifters, carb, MSD 6AL, elect. fuel pump and reg., and a remote oil filter adaptor.

Today I need to clean up the heads (comb. chamber), clean up and list the old oil pan, and clean up and paint the "new" oil pan.

I got the heads cleaned, but decided to wait on the 2 oil pans mentioned above so I could figure out exactly what level the dip stick is supposed to sit at in the oil pan.

I got the camshaft and lifters today.  ;D  I took the cam spec sheet to my carb guy, for jetting purposes, and he forewarned me to have one of the valve springs checked first before installing the cam.  ???  So I got a little bit of a delay on that part of putting the engine back together. I'm going to have to rent a valve spring compressor too. I was thinking about building one out of one of my many welder's vice grips. I got the head studs today too.   ;D  You see, I figure since it has forged pistons and crank, 4 bolt mains, why not put studs on the heads and put it on the bottle too.   ;D   ;D   ;D  Also, completely by accident while surfing the web I found out there is a very special way that head studs need to be installed.   ???  So that was cool because I found the instructions also on the web.   ;D  I told my carb guy that I was running out of funds and that I was going to wait on buying a Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake manifold. I also told him I was going to temporarily use the intake that came on the engine when I bought it, an Edelbrock C427X. After picking up his bottom jaw off of the floor   ???  he told me that manifold is hard to find and that it is actually better than the Air Gap.   ;D   ;D   ;D

Today I cleaned all of the threads on the block, cleaned all the gasket surfaces on the block, removed the old camshaft, installed the new camshaft, and installed the gear drive.

If you ever remove the harmonic balancer, make sure you install the tip on the puller before screwing it into the crank. Otherwise you risk damaging the threads that hold on the balancer to the crank. Not that I would know, it's just what I heard..  ::)

Those valve spring compessor's are available for purchase at Kragen also.

In high school shop class I used a valve spring compressor that was very close to a welder's vise grip "C" clamp. I think I'm going to build one. I like the way it compressed the spring against the valve instead of against itself. Just seems like a better way to remove and reinstall the springs.

I'm rapidly running out of funds.   :'(

I'm pretty confident that the camshaft guy is going to tell me I need different valve springs. I'm also confident the carb guy is going to want to get paid. That's about $350 I ain't got. I'm going to have to do a mad eBay selling scramble to get out of the hole I dug for myself.   ???

Excellant question Ralph. My original plan was to build a 60 mph boat that I could tow the kids around with (wake boards, inner tubes, etc...). The problem arose when I dissassembled the engine I had bought used and found forged crank, forged pistons, ~11:1 compression, and 4 bolt mains.

So if you're forced to buy expensive gas due to the compression ratio anyway, what kind of engine do you build?

I picked up my carb from my carb guy today. He's been doing carbs since he was a teen and he looks like he's about 70 years old. Nascar, NHRA, boats, you name it he's done the carb on it - as long as it ended up in the winner's circle.   ;)

The carb got completely rebuilt. As all the carbs he rebuilds every screw, plate, body, etc... got replated with it's proper plating. Alcohol gaskets were used, at his recomendation, because they don't detiorate (spelling?) like the normal Holley gaskets do. It also got a new base plate as the old one had a repair of a crack and a new crack. Apparently when a crab gets tightened on to the intake manifold he needs to be tightened evenly.   ;)  It wasn't me, I've never used it yet, but now I know.

Don't drool on the keyboard please, I can't be held responsible for damaging it.   ;D

This guy can work any carb garuanteed my friend.   ;D  He's got these very cool old school Winfield carbs (when out of business in 1941) and a hand made intake manifold from the '30's that he's working on. These things are sweeeet looking, the intake is either made of or plated with copper!

I'm not sure it was in '41 that Winfield went out of business or not. Ed had sold the company years before but stayed on in some kind of position. I'll have to ask some of my banger buddies that knew Ed Winfield.
Man is a legend. Pretty much the father of modern speed equipment.

Big race in the mid '20s in Hanford Ca I believe, to see who had the fastest sprint car in the nation. All the big names were there from all over the country to claim the prize including Louis Chevrolet and his cars. Winfield showed up with his 170ci flathead model T Ford engine and cleaned everyones clock. This was against all the overhead engines. Chevrolet said 'I saw it, but I don't believe it'. Winfields T ran 132 mph, coud be the fastest Model T ever, oh yeah engine still had a splash system (no oil pump, no stock T has one either) no water pump and a whopping compression ratio of 6 1/4 to 1. And the engine still exists, and just changed hands this last year or so after the owner died.

His carb won at Indy in 1926 and won every year after until fuel injection came to play. He retired in Las Vegas and lived until the early 1980s, grinding cams up to the last 2 years of his life. Isky bought his old cam grinder and still has it. Ed ground his first cam by hand. Wish I could have met him.  ;)

I have a Winfield Model N 2" sidedraft carb, NOS, never been mounted on a engine. Someday I'm going to build a banger just to run the thing. lol

Cool history. Thanks!   ;)

I don't have the best memory so I could have easily mis-qouted my carb guy's statement that Winfield went out of business in '41.  ;)  I do know that those carbs and intake were purty, maybe when I go back to his house I'll be able to take a pic of them. Those carbs and intake don't have anything to do with jet boats but they are for a hot rod and jet boats are hot rod's for the water!   ;D

I replaced the Valve stem seals today, what a pain in the freakin' asss. I borrowed a valve spring compressor from marcsrollin, I hated that P.O.S. because you had to put a golf ball under the head, clamp the head to a table, and then stand on the damn thing hoping the clamps were going to hold - for each valve seal. Not me brother. So then I went down to the local Smagen's Auto parts and bought the $30 valve spring compressor and you still needed to clamp the stupid head to a table with a ball under it because the valve locks stick to the valve. Not me brother. So then I broke out the buzz box welder, a grinder with a cut off wheel, and made my own valve spring compressor like I originally was going to do.   ;)  That worked to an extent, I didn't have to clamp the head to a table, I didn't have to stand on anything, but it didn't compress the valve spring enough to remove the locks. What it did do, and really well, is break the bond between the locks and the valves - easily.   ;D  Close enough for me brother.   ;)   ;D  Then I dropped the heads onto the block and figured out that 4 head studs are too long. 4 of them either need to be die'ed further or use a spacer on them. I also figured out it's a pain in the asss to put the head on over the studs, so I ended up removing all the studs in order to put the heads on the block. Then I dropped the intake on top, the carb, the scoop, grabbed a beer, and walked away for the night.

I torqued the heads down tonight, or at least all the nust onto the studs.   :(  I was following the instructions for the studs and in that process you need to loosen the nut and re-torque it down. Well all the nuts were stuck on the studs so I am now very concerned that maybe the nuts are torqued to the studs but the head may not be torqued to the block (studs too long). There is small amount of each bolt's shank (where there are not any threads) sticking out of the head. So I'm considering each of the following: leave it alone and trust the stud manufacturer (Pro Comp), either adding a flat washer to each nut (making two total washers on each stud/nut), or throwing the studs in the trash and using stock bolts.

I wanted to use studs because it will have nitrous.   ???

I also found 2 heavily damaged ends on 2 of the pushrods, not good for new lifters or new rocker arms.   :(

Today was a successfull day, kind of.   ???

I got my garage cleaned, raised the engine up with my (choose a racial explitative) cherry picker, moved the boat into the garage ( ! ) , lowered the engine - and met hell.   :'(  Pretty much a major pain in the asss. I've been working on it now, after work, for 9 hours.

A long story short there's usefull info in here... if you pull an Olds 455 out and leave the srtinger mounts on the stringers, and you're putting in a 454 Chevy, leave both front and rear stringer mounts where they're at, make 1/2 inch thick spacers for your front engine mount and BAM   :o  you're done.   ;D

However, if you run into a snag say, and suppose the driveline don't go into the pump,  ???  , and then say you TAP the yoke with a hammer, and the yoke gets stuck in the damn pump and then you pry out the yoke outta tha pump and you break the pump and then you steal a driveline from a friend (Hi Marc) and it don't even fit and then your sandblasting a yoke in the dark and it don't go in and yer like what the   ???   >:(   >:(   :'(  so you work on it some more you finally get the damn @#!^&*%@# yoke in there and you can bolt the engine to the mounts and ONE hole lines up so you drill out the rest (stringers are freakin' beutifull in this hull brother!) and your bolt the stringer mounts to the engine mounts and you run outtta bolts but its 12:30 in the morning and your starting to get faded   ;D  and then you sit down   ???  you stare at it, do this do that   8)  take a couple of pics and say - DMN THAT WAS EASY!   O0

NOS.   ;D  150 Super Shot

I bought it used, no instructions. Does the fuel or the NOS solenoid go in the front of the engine, does it matter? Anyone know out there?

What do you think of the bottle location? I can't have it where it's normally put in the center of the front of the boat with the handle towards the driver (ME!) because I want easy access to under the bow for life jackets and crap.

All I wanted to do was set the bottle on the floor, but I just had to remove the fire extinguisher bottle bracket to do it so I got a screwdriver to turn the 2 little phillips heads screws and that didn't work so I got a socket and ratchet and THAT didn't work so I gots me a freakin hammer and THAT WORKED!   ;D

Lets make some simple spacers, say a half inch thick, to mount your engine, it's too late to go to the metal shop and buy aluminum, what do you do? You fanagle a engine mount from a friend (Thanks Marc!) and you make yourself a pair of spacers.   ;D

It seems odd to me that both of the Roger's that I've owned both had their cables going through fiberglass instead of through the pump or stainless grommets on the transom.   ???

Check out the pic of me sitting in the back seat, look how close that engine is to my leg!   :o

The driveline is crooked because it isn't bolted to the PTO, I still need to break the cam in. It does line up really well.

Thank you and goodnight.  8)

it looks sweet rod hey it dont matter where the bottle sits its under big time psi just make sure to keep the nose of it up a little bit and put a heater on it  get the psi up even more  so it flows better and on the silinoids put them on the sides of the carb the gas on the gas side and the nos on the opisite side  :)

My project took a  turn yesterday, have you ever felt buyer's remorse?   ???  Yeah, I'm going through it right now. Pics of that remorse in a few days...   ;)

But for now, here you go.   ;D

p.s.: what's "the right way" (without fiberglass work) for me to align the exhaust log's outlet to the part on the transom?   ???  Old Rigger?   ;D

just a couple of things though, turn the scoop around and your oil filter lines they are under pressure sooooooooooooo,  i wouldnt want the hose clamps to fail and drain your pan before you noticed. what size are the lines. please reconsider with better lines.

yeah keep those nose of the bottle up a little 2 or 3 inchs this is to help it flow and you want a bottle heater to get the psi around 900 depending on size of bottle  the noids dont really matter your lines will just have to be longer also i put my bottle on the driver side next to the seat so u cant see it  and keeps it out of the way  oh the scoop looks great the way it is  u dont see drag boats with the scoop turned around its made to scoop air thats why they call it a SCOOP ralph  good luck ;D

If you race in circles you need to point the scoop towards the rear of the boat that way when someone passes you   :o  or you lap someone else   8)  you don't suck water into the engine.   ;D  But if you don't race in a circle point the scoop forward.   ;)

All of the stainless braided line has been run and hooked up for the water and oil lines. Next is the water and fuel seperator, electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure gauge, fuel filter, nitrous plate, and carb.

I talked briefly with Ralph one day about my current lack of cash is slowing me down on finishing boat, I wanted all stainless braided line, etc...  ;D

He said, it just depends on how bad you want it on the water.   ;)

I decided right then that it was getting done, on time, with safe effective CHEAP practices. I figured I could do ONE thing a day, cram it into my schedule, I could still easily be done by 7/6/07. In the last two days I've installed my carb, it's fuel lines, fuel/water seperator from Wal Mart, fuel filter, Holley fuel reg., Holley electric fuel pump, made a altenator bracket and put the altenator on, and installed the scoop and spark arrestor in the correct direction.

Next is wiring.   ;D  This one's wires are original and in excellant shape. Unfortunately it's had about 400,000 mechanics work on it who obviously don't know how to fix wiring they just knew how to run a new wire. Often, in this particular boats case. Spagetti. Basuda. Crap. But I love wiring.   ;D  Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I got a matching PCV for both sides of the engine and ran a T into the carb. Rubber hose. Installed the carb, throttle cable, wired the engine, allmost finished the boat wiring, drilled, tapped, and bolted on the driveshaft cover (bottom 1/2 of it), installed the MSD 6AL, broke the back light  :-\ , made and installed 1/O battery cable for the starter (because I can), stripped the + post on the starter  :-[  (I need a starter BTW), and I am now need of parts... and some more time... and a few more parts... Hotrod, you are going to want to eliminate the second PCV valve. For the PCV to work properly and actually ventilate the crankcase, you want a breather on one cover and PCV on the other.

If the stripped threads are on a GM style starter, just replace the solenoid, but use a quality one(like AC Delco). You might also check with the local GM dealer to see if they still supply the low tension return spring for the solenoid plunger. It requires a little less current to actuate the solenoid, helping to prevent "hot start" problems.

My carb guy recomended that I do that with the PCV's. He's been around the racing scene a long time. I'll stick with it unless it causes me problems. Why do you think it will be a problem/not work properly? Thanks.

Depends what he is trying to accomplish. Without a breather, no fresh air will circulate into the crankcase, meaning no fumes will be drawn through into the intake. Hence, no ventilation and the benefit of a standard PCV system won't be there. I can only assume that he is suggesting it as a "poor man's" way of building crankcase vacuum which is usually done to assist in ring seal. Not sure how much benefit there will be as the manifold vacuum in your boat engine at pretty much any speed above idle will be quite low. In a car, things would be different. Not saying his idea wont work or will cause problems, just kind of question its effectiveness.

I was doing some more reading in this thread. Saw your issue with the head studs. Did you get that figured out? Did the nuts torque properly without bottoming on the threads of the studs?

A breif uhmmm... my carb guy has been involved in every type of racing at some point or another for at leats 40 years. Boats, NHRA dragsters, blown, turbo'd, naturally aspirated, anything that exists in racing he's done and done well in. Not too long ago he was heavily involved in NHRA top fuel dragsters (several) due to his reputation and skills. We used to have a asphalt oval here in town and after he retired he got into that racing. He came up with the idea of dual PCV's on those cars. They eventually outlawed dual PCV's because of an unfair advantage on the track. He suggested the dual PCV's to me and with his suggestion and the fact that those paved oval car's use a lot of mid-range and top-end power I chose to use his suggestion. I can clearly see your point about the dual PCV with no air coming in point I'm just not sure what to make of it considering who suggested I install dual PCV's. Time will tell.

... I was doing some more reading in this thread. Saw your issue with the head studs. Did you get that figured out? Did the nuts torque properly without bottoming on the threads of the studs?

I ditched the Pro Comp heads studs (claimed to be the same as TRW or any of the other...) and got... damn can't remember the name of... famous manufacturer... regular head bolts instead of the studs. My whole point of the studs (in addition to the already in the engine forged pistons and crank) was to get NOS on the boat purely for sandbar appeal. I know that's kind of a BS reason for NOS but with the forged stuff in there I could have easily used it - wisely - seldomly. Unfortunately I got into a bind with my ever changinf finances and sold the NOS. Head bolts will be fine.   ;)  The studs/nuts never properly torqued the heads.   >:(

Hey Oldsquirt, I'd like your input here. My Glenwood exhaust logs/snails output is way off (angle) from my exhaust outlets on my transom. should I slap some rubber hose on it or do??????????

The only thing I've come up with in my head is steel pipe cut/welded/fabbed into an "S" shape to meet the ends of the snails and outlets. I got the pipe today to do it soooo... thanks.

I'm really tired today. I might be fighting off the flu my son is trying to get rid of.   :P

I installed the spark plug wires. re-ran one wire because I didn't like the way it looked. I got the pieces together on the garage floor for my exhaust situation. (Note: next time put in the logs second to last, pain in the assss to work around.) I stared at it for quite some time. I know I can make the parts, but they look ugly to me when I picture it in my head. Also, the pipes would be too short with too much bend (bent coathangers show angles) and still have enough room for the hoses to slide on far enough to get it the pipe installed. I'd have to make the pipes, remove the logs from the engine, and install the logs with the pipes attached as one. I think it would look ugly. I'm not a fan of using the rubber hoses and man-handling the clamps with a torque wrench to keep them on and sealed. Joe at JP Marine said he had some snails where the outlets went straight down, I could attach a 90 elbow at the outlet and the rubber hose would be almost a perfect straight shot. Seems real restrictive (as if the logs weren't restrictive enough already). Unless I'm missing something (brain cells) I don't see another option and keeping the logs.

I installed the starter, put the hoses and pipes on, and ran out of hose clamps.

As of right now, it needs some hose clamps, water, fuel, oil, and it'll be time to break in the cam. Oh yeah, I have to move 3 boats and a truck to get the Rogers to where I can put a hose on it.
Title: Re: One small step closer
Post by: hotrod56cars on June 16, 2007, 04:34:35 PM
First thigs first, anyone that's read this entire thread knows that throughout the entire process of me putting this boat together it's bee two steps forward and one step back, sometimes more than one step back.   :(

I wanted to break in the camshaft today. I got it ready to run. The next thing I did was turn the water on at the garden hose, one leak... two leaks... where in the hell is all of this water going? It isn't coming out of the exhaust - quickly panic and shut the water off.   ???  I don't need water until it's running so I left it off. Next I turned the key to on, fuel filter isn't getting fuel.   ???  Oh, the fuel tank valves are off.   :D  Turn the key back on, yep there's fuel! Pissing all over my intake I spent like 3 hours sandblasting. Tighten the fittings... fuel, 7 psi of it.   ;D  Let's start the engine. No start. No spark. No power at the coil wire. Power for the coil comes straight out of the MSD 6AL.   :-\  Checking, checking, checking, I'm getting 9.5 volts at my distribution block straight from the ignition switch. I remember having trouble when I bought the boat with the ignition switch. The boat has a bad ignition switch in it. Whoa, what's that glare? OH! That would be the ? 1/2 quart of oil sitting at the bottom of my boats hull. Stainless steel line I put together is leaking badly, which means the entire time I was trying to start the engine it wasn't getting hardly any oil to it because it's leaking out of the remote oil filter output.   ???  Freakin' hose is leaking.

Break time.

ok rod back to basics. did you pre-lube the engine????? as in drill motor on the oil pump shaft to make sure you have pressure before you crank the snot out of it and it wont start, you might want to just put the oil filter on the block for break in. keep it simple during this period.this might be too late but i hope not.
Title: Re: One small step closer
Post by: hotrod56cars on June 16, 2007, 10:33:30 PM
I didn't pre-lube the engine because I didn't rebuild the whole thing, I didn't think I needed to. In retrospect, I should have. I unconnected the remote oil filter and cooler and put a reg oil filter on the block. I replaced the ig switch because I had 9.5 volts at the engine. First switch was bad, put on another switch. 11.90 volts at the battery and 11.89 volts at the engine. No spark still. I disconnected all MSD, installed a new bare bones points distributer and a used coil I had laying around. No spark. I replaced the coil with another coil. No spark. Very simple sh!t here not working. I pulled the cap off of the dist. because I remembered when I was a sophmore in HS I pulled the cap off of the dist, turned the engine over, saw a spark, and the car's battery blew up into my face and eyes, so I tried it again on the boat, no spark. By this time, I've spun the engine enough to have driven down to the dealer if it were a car, completely by the starter. The battery is tired too, even though it's new (was). I'm almost wanting to place a bet on how f****d up the engine/cam is by now.

At this point I'm frustrated, tired, pissed off, sad, angry, confused, near violent, perplexed, dissappointed in myself, I sat back and drink a beer a stared at it. Could be a short in the tach I guess. Could be a bad coil wire. Could be gremlins - that would explain the laughing I hear in my head (just kidding). I'm done for today.

well?

Too many things on my plate, it was really important to get it done Saturday which obviously didn't happen. I haven't had a second to work on it other than yesterday which was Father's Day. It hasn't been forgotten or given up on to any extent, no time. I really really needed to get it done Saturday!

I'm going to get back on it _______. ( ? )

I sold over $2800 worth of parts on Sunday, I've been making boxes and shipping labels ever since. Today, my parents are coming to town for a few days, tomorrow my daughter graduates High School, Wednesday I've got plans all day with the fam, Thursday my parents leave town, so the earliest I see myself having the time to work on it again is Thursday night. Crunch time for sure.    :P

Boy... you've  had your share with this boat haven't you? It's all basic stuff and I'm sure the no spark issue is gonna be a very simple fix.

I really wanted to just say congrats on your daughters graduation! Ours did the same on Thursday. She's off to Chapman college at the end of the summer. 2 in college now and one still in middle school.

The no spark condition was driving me insane when I was working on it. I've been doing electrical work for more than 20 years on cars and I couldn't get my own boat to get a spark? rrrrrrr....   >:(

Congrats to you and your daughter as well. As for me, 1 down (out of high school) and 3 to go.   :D

Our son has a pretty clean '62 falcon ranchero that he uses for work and school (he works at the fuel dock in Newport harbor! what a job, working in his swim trunks, pumping fuel/gas in yachts all day and fishing when it's slow) but the car had an electrical short that was driving me nuts. Finally this weekend I tore the original loom out of the car, cut off the factory tape and tried to find the problem...nothing. Wire still looked very nice so I taped everything back up and started over. Long story short, it was a chicken shit wire in the steering column that had rubbed through the insulation. Drove me absolutly crazy, but it felt soooo good to finally solve the problem.  :D

i had a similar prob this weekend was getting intermitant spark and tach didnt work. so i went the simple route and took out the key switch and put a toggle for the ignition, a hidden toggle for power and a starter button, along with some auto meter gauges that i had laying around and what do you know fixed all the elec probs

The plan is something like this, connect the ballast straight to the battery, go from the ballast straight to the coil, turn the key to spin the engine, look for spark, I am freaking that the engine has spun so much without it ever starting, I just want the thing to run to break in the cam, I can make it right after that. It has to be something stupid - other than the mechanic!   :D

No spark. I tested it at the number 2 plug wire multiple times and later multiple times at the coil wire. Looking inside the two new distributor caps it sure lookes like there was some sparks in there.   ???

what i did was put a test light on the neg side of coil and crank the engine and it did not pulse so no spark. after the repair it pulsed like it should

I know exactly what you're talking about Ralph, I did the same test on mine and it pulsed. I'm thinking I've got bad spark plug wires.   ???  I've got a few more "loose ends" to tie up and then it's on!, I'm working on it until it's running.

I was waiting for that, took ya' long enough...  :D

marcsrolling came over to my house today, mainly as just a bro showing support but he also helped out where a lot of strength and we bounced thoughts on what was going on with the engine between us.

My MSD 6AL was ****ed up, with only the 6AL's power, ground, and the tach wire hooked up it made the coil emit a constant rapdi fire spark come out of the coil irregardless of whether or not the engine was turning over/running or not. I disconnected the 6AL, used the single points distributer and the MSD Blaster 2 coil and it had decent spark. Water leaking everywhere. Got the engine fired up but only for about 2 seconds, I regapped the plugs from 40 to 28 and it ran - like sh!t. Played with the timing a little, played with the choke a little, it wouldn't idle, had little power, ran real rough, gear drive sounds good   ;D  , I got the engine to run around 2500 RPM and I held it there, by hand, because the carbs idle adjustment wouldn't give enough gas to the engine to keep it running. It had several backfires, fires in the carb, spits, spudders, the engine just generally barely ran. At about 5 minutes Marc noticed and pointed out a lot of steam coming out the breather. At about 10 minutes I noticed the "tripey" looking bubbles on the cement behind the boat. At about 15 minutes Marc noticed and pointed out the oil coming out of the oil pan gasket. About 3 minutes later I noticed the water shooting out of the oil dipstick tube when I removed the oil dipstick. At about 23 minutes I asked Marc to shut the engine off (he was at the key switch) and I let go of the carb and it died before Marc turned the key off. The engine ran for about 23 minutes varying from 2000 RPM to 2800 RPM ('cause it ran like sh!t), not sure if the cam is broke in.  :'(

Marc and I then spent the next ? 45 minutes and removed then engine from the boat. Tomorrow afternoon the engine is going to a reputable performance mechanic. He's going to access what the engine needs, what I did wrong, where..., why..., how..., etc...

I would rather "go out" with honesty and get trashed for being a sh!tty mechanic than live with a little white lie.  ;)

The good news is that my engine is no longer in the way for me to clean the bildge and pump!   :D

Sounds Familiar :o  I hope you don't have the bad luck I've been plagued with.  I wish I had opted for a having a professional do mine now, but then again I have learned a lot about my engine.  I assume you triple checked the fireing order, I had that problem, and have heard a few other people with similar sounding problem find that to be the reason. a couple mixed up wires will cause the backfires and bad idleing

My G/F is sponsoring this deal, $400, the guy builds race engines for a living. Tear the engine apart, clean, inspect, measure, advise, (replace?), re-assemble. He has built engines for Chip Foose as well as many other known hot rod builders and has been on TV "hot rod" shows as the engine builder for the show's projects. I remove and re-install the engine. My last futile attempt to have it in the water this season.

1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2   I've had it memorized for about 29 years.

One giant leap backwards.   :'(

I got a call from the mechanic. He highly recomends that my engine be rebuilt because it's in a boat. It's on the tired side, not worn out but it is tired. It doesn't need a rebore and the steel crank measures good. Camshaft is fine. I didn't degree the cam when I installed it and it is currently 8 degree's retarded. I don't have the cash that it requires. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. $1100 gets me my engine freshened up with new bearings and rings, valve job, and it all correctly installed.

Options:
Save my penny's for _ years and rebuild the current engine.
Find a different engine after saving my pennies.
Sell the whole project piece by piece.

FYI: if you've got a BBC with oval port heads and you're using a rectangular port intake manifold you need to use the rectangular port gasket set otherwise 6 of the 8 cylinders will have a huge vaccuum leak.

I think I'm going to puke.   :P

I got word today that my engine's parts are back from the machine shop. Crank was polished and ? nitrated or something like that, pistons and rods were ?, block was honed and surfaced, heads were surfaced and had a vlave job done to them. The mechanic is just waiting for $ to put the engine back together (correctly). He said it could easily be done in less than a week, bummer, since I won't have the cash until ______.  ???

Everyone is paying like they should on my eBay sells so it looks like I can call my engine builder tomorrow and tell him it's a go. The High Life didn't do as well as I thought so it looks like 425-450 HP is going to have to cut it. It definately isn't going to be a race boat with that set-up though.  :-\  I found out that it has a steel 427 crank in it, which makes it a 433 I guess (0.30 overbore) and not a 461.  ??? Should be on the water in less than 3 weeks, it would be a nice birthday present for myself. It should be a solid combination with that steel crank, forged pistons, 11:1 compression, and new cam... i thought about going with a roller cam, but with the heads limiting the breathing ability, and the $1,000+ price tag of a roller, maybe getting 50 - 75 HP more out of it, I'm going to have to pass for now.

I welded and grinded on tons of crap in the last few weeks and I got (damn, what's that word... ... ...) steel specks all over my boat. Now the specks are rusting, in the paint. Clay bar where are you??

You are probably the only one I know who has a jet boat that does 80 mph easily, that doesn't "it'll do a 100" on the trailer, with 500  >:D  horsepower. If you didn't have that shed out back...  :o   :D  I figure I would want 600 HP min. to go circle racing.

I wanted to sell the motorhome and get Plesh's 6/71 blower and Enderale fuel injection but I was advised not to... Chevy's are just generally ugly after they've gone through the bottom of a jet boat hull (unlike Ford's who look better after they've gone through the bottom of any hull).   >:D

I think that chart is for stock (non-set back pump, no ride plate, etc...) Berkeley pumps... 5200 RPM looks like to me to be about 440 HP ??? ... I guess I'll have to wait and see how close I can get it to 80 mph... at least I can use my cell phone to figure it out.  :D

That is a possibility but it would never happen until after the Rogers was on the water with me as it's owner.   ;)

Since the engine builder I'm using broke his ankle and leg, you're probably right.  :-\

I already have a family boat and have zero interest in getting a second one.  ;)  (i.e.: my boat isn't going to have an outboard.)

Probably trying to do like Milodons Vac-u-pan except with vacuum instead of exhaust (wich we all should do since our boats don't have mufflers ;D)
Keep them pics coming...  always look forward to your progress ;)
