question for the prop guys

so, let's change it up a little.. am working with my buddy on his boat, it's been painted for the last two years and still doesent have a motor in it.. but the rails and everything are there  :banghead:.. anyways

the wit strut, and the prop strut are in, shafts in, when the prop strut was tight there was considerable force moving the prop - with it loosened, it's much easier to turn.. about how it should feel (im only comparing the how it 'should' feel to a '07 Malibu wakesetter).. thinking that the prop strut is a little cocked.. Is there anything that we're missing as far as lining up the prop shaft.. or should we pull out the bolts and wallow the holes a bit to get it cocked right?

nathan, typically the couplings are aligned to eachother, I guess in other words, coupling to shaft, not the other way around... if the strut is cocked (crooked) I would think something is bent or misaligned, have you got a picture of what's going on? I've been working 75-80 hour weeks and think visually when I'm tired, so this would be a huge help...

you should be able to rotate the propeller with very little force (I've always used being able to rotate the shaft by hand without the prop as a baseline)..Dead Nuts is just close enough.

GT, the coupling isnt hooked up yet - if it's the coupling to the v-drive that your  talking about.
the prop shaft is true, when we loosened the prop strut it was much easier to turn, but before - i had to use both hands and give it a good hard turn. - afterwards, could near do it one handed.

So its only in the packing and the strut?  Did this thing run before?, sounds to me like a tweaked strut...Do the bearings have set screws or a roll pin?  BTW roll pins are very, very rare...

ran before, yes - but it's not impossible for the strut to be tweaked. bearings on the? v-drive? or in the struts? BTW, we've not even got the seal in that seals the shaft from the bottom of the boat.

Brass or steel strut?    There are two water lubed bearings in the strut, sort of looks like a piece of hose, how are they held in? Sometimes the set screws are too tight or offset with eachother, I'm betting on a bent strut. You should be able to push the propshaft through the strut and the hull with a pinky finger...

If the hull is "sandwiched" between the strut and a backup plate (the proper way to do it), try oversizing the holes in the hull slightly (shouldn't take much)  then with the shaft installed, torque one bolt at a time while slowly rotating the shaft making sure it does not "go tight".

It is my practice to use regular nuts on the bolts to test fit, or dry fit before using aircraft nuts (AKA Nylocks), once the alignment is achieved, mark/index everything and put it together with sealants and Nylocks, should be good to go...

First the shaft to the strut and thru hull, then the shaft to the coupling, this is often overlooked and is the most common cause of vibration and failure of components in the drivetrain, including the vee box. Some guys like to see a "slight" mis-alignment to the strut, but IMHO not neccisary if everything is in good shape, keep in mind al of the horsepower is going down the middle of that shaft, any mis-alignment causes unneeded strain...
