We threw the boat in the water for the first time today to make sure it floats before our big event next weekend. Didnt want to tow it all that way only to have it not run.

The old girl lit at the touch of the switch. It was a fun (and proud) moment to watch my son hit the water with his own ride bought and paid for by his hard work.

It took him a while to figure the ride/cavplate/diverter setup but soon began to get a better understanding of it and made it work really well.

He got it to 5200 rpm and it was very happy at that speed and rode great with just a touch of down pedal once in awhile.

Many thanks to everyone up here and on this site for the help and encouragement. Also gotta send my luv again to Rhonda, Josh and even Tommy for all the help.............john

Hi Glenn, This is Ian.

When i first got to boat up on a plane, i drove the boat around for awhile with the diverter 2 notches up from all the way down, the boat was very "driveable" there. As i got more and more comfortable with it, i went up on the diverter, it got lighter as it went up until the 3rd notch from all the way up. That is where the porpoise began. The first time i experienced it, it was pretty violent. I had no clue it was coming, ran it up to about 4000rpm took two hops and completely unloaded the pump. Thats when the fun started.

I began playing with the plates, at first i was unsure of how much the plates could really do for the attitude of the boat. As time went on, i got into the plates, and got the boat to ride flat with no porpoise even with the diverter all the way up, much to my suprise.

I never layed into it for a long time, best i saw was 5200rpm headed back to the boat launch. But that was with no porpoise at all. I really think i can dial the porpoise out completly with a little bit of seat time. For now im VERY happy with it. I have the rideplate set at 2.25 degrees up from keel. That will be my baseline.

OK guys, OC2Vegas just took some pics of his 1979 Superjet for me. And when i started to compare the two... man did that open a can of worms!!!

Im just throwing this out there, BUT what i believe is that the UFO may have a Sprint bottom (along with added drop keel) with a SuperJet deck. From what i have read throughout the research is that the sprint has a very narrow "cockpit" especially back by the motor, and has a longer deck than the super jets. The deck of the UFO definatly matches every other superjet ive seen, but the bottom seems to be different, more then just the drop keel. it appears that the super jets have very shallow lifting strakes, where-as the UFO has very deep and "swoopy" strakes, much like the sprint that i have a picture of. i will post a few pictures for you to give your input on. Just thinking outloud on this one!!

NOW, this is a pic of Sprint. Notice the very narrow engine compartment, and different bottom then the superjets above.

Ok, now from seeing those pictures. here are some of the UFO. It is hard to get pictures that show the bottom like the others posted because of the cav plates but i think these will do just fine. The bottom sure like like a sprint bottom to me, and the boat definatly has the superjet deck. Could it really be possible that the boat was special ordered with that combo or am i just dreaming?

Also note that the superjets picture above all have two stringers for each side of the boat (3 lifting strakes per side), and the sprint has one(two lifting strakes per side).......... the UFO has one stringer per side(and two lifting strakes per side).....

FYI: im counting the outside edge of the boats with the lip as a lifting strake also, mainly because i dont know what else it would be called.

It is definately not a superjet, I have known that all along, but I never caught engine bay deal...I thought it was a one off, never thought to put 2 and 2 together.....Our Superjet had some similarities but the floor did not work out how the UFO II's did, good catch John...

Talked about that boat with Tom last year at Long Beach. It's possible it might have been a "promotional" race boat.... Sanger wanted to sell the Super Jets more because of their space, but wanted the speed of the Sprint double concave bottom. Also the earlier SuperJets had the double concave bottoms as well, I think they switched in 1976? JMO from what I've heard around the campfire.

Also, have any of you heard of a guy that goes by the name.... "Sano" Don La Franchi? in the process of cleaning the boat up i took a few pics of the very very faded pinstriping on the dash, then took them to microsoft paint and tried to redo what the striping once said. this is what i found. Ian, just to make things a little more confusing, that second pic is a custom sprint. Jim Rich they were made with both bottoms. Another person to hit up over at PB is Harlin Orrin, he was the shop foreman from the early to mid 70's. He designed the double bubble 20' cruiser, retooled the shovel nose's into pickle forks and may have had something to do with these.

The UFO had distinct similarities to my Older Sprint when I had them side by side BUT.. Josh and I still believe the keel for nearly the entire length of the hull is "dropped" about 1/4 to 3/8 inch, look real hard at the approximate 20 wide section of the center (betwen the Balsa sections ) to see this! Harlan is by far the "man" but the person I was working with that gave me the most insight into this was Jeff Bennett (the guy is a boat bottom God) Tom

That's a good tip Tommy. I hadn't thought of pestering Jeff about this. I've pm'd Harlan and Billy B but will give Jeff a try as well (specially since you've already discussed with him).

Skips Precision Marine in Redlands is a couple shops down from mine (I hang out over there at lunch to get away once in a while

). Anyway, Skip and His Brother Troy ran Riverside Boat & marine in the 70's-80's and was the Sanger dealer in the area. Both were involved with race boats at that time and might know something about it. I''ll try to drag him down to the shop to show him some pics because he don't do computers.
