This is probably going to be a real short thread but here it is anyway. Southwind 18, Berkeley 12JC RTR, Ford 460 we just found out is full of water  :banghead:  and we (my friend Don's and my project)don't think we're going to have enough $ to get her going again. MSD marine box, seats upholstory is good but the wood is shot. Sound hull with excellant stringers, could use a new floor but not mandatory.


Anyone out there, local to me, have a 429/460 Ford they want to sell?

Ain't that the truth but it all works out in the end anyway so WTF?  ;D

On a more positive note found a complete 460 that is only missing the starter, the guy said he'll put our starter on it, start and run the engine for us, and then deliver it to my house for $500! Now as long as the seller comes through on his part of the deal then my luck has just changed.  ;D  I'll find out tomorrow.

It's a 1972 460, I hope, it runs really good. Claimed to have 63,000 miles on it. Paid $500 delivered for it.


Not that it really matters, but what's the deal with these heads, junk or???

those are the ford open chamber heads and real prone to detanation (sp) so yeah they are junk.

Onward and upward  :screwy:  pulled the valve covers off the "new" 460 and found a plefora (sp?) of little black rocks sitting on top of the heads. Little black rocks turned out to be broken up valve seals.  :banghead:  Completely tore down the engine, cleaned it all out, checked it all out, oil pump screen was full of little black rocks, etc... and got it back together tonight. Hopefully it's right, Ford is a little different than GM. 140 lbs!! Are you freakin kidding me? Cylinder head torque is 140 lbs. I really liked the lay out of the head bolts.
1/2 way baqck together


Lincolns come with plastic timing gear for the cam. This is actually a Lincoln 460. Broken tooth to boot.


little black rocks and the only 2 intact valve seals.


Starting to make stupid mistakes, done for the night.  :P


Bagged up (Maiers quad fender bag  ;D ) and waiting for tomorrow.



The "story" is the engine sat in storage for 15 years, by the valve seals alone I believe it.

When I dissassembled the 460 a bolt broke for the water pump. Tonight I tried to remove the bolt - not going to happen. So I did a center punch in the middle of the bolt and proceeded to drill it out crooked. So it's going in the trash and I'll use the one of the 460 that's still in the boat. I really don't like the timing chain cover on a 460, the rest of it I liked. I was going to pull the engine out of the boat tomorrow but the woman wants some attention so the engine is going to wait for Sunday. I'm hoping this project will be done in 3 weeks but in order for that to happen my partner in the project is going to have to start showing up to help. Either way I'm going to have a RTR drop in and go 460 by the end of this weekend.   ;)

I've never liked Small Mopar/Ford style timing covers, I wish they we're like Chevy  :banghead: but the rest I would want to stay Ford  ;D

I was thinking my 340 that I had also used a cover like that but it's been so long I wasn't sure.

weld small washer on broken stud with stick welder or wire then weld or plug
weld a nut to waser and stud 3/32 5p rod or any small 6010 or 7018 rod
 hit with hammer when welded and let cool bolt should come out easy you
might have to try more than one time the heat will free the bolt.
