Well, I did it again, brought home another huge undertaking, but I really dig this one.
She's a 1991 Carrera 20.5 Elite that has had a very hard life.
Was abused, stolen, stripped, and left to die in a storage facility up north, but I think I can save her...(Famous last words)
Any way, I'll try to keep up with the posts....

Hey Tom, I thought this one would be easier, no way can I piss off any old school circle racers and once done my family won't be afraid of this one, my little boat is so nasty they won't even get in it... :banghead:
BTW this is one of the nicest boats (other than the little Sanger of course) that I have ever brought home...Sick I tell you, sick! >:D

OK the floor is cut out, the bow seating area disassembled, the remaining electical crap is all removed and it has been steam cleaned melamine patterns have been made also, too damn dark for pics but will get some tomorrow, who ever did the glass work repairs on this thing is not welcome at my house! What a hack...the good news is the stringers and transom are perfect and in tact, picked up a wrecked Competitive trailer today, like I needed more shit to fix :banghead: but it will look cool... 8)

Decided to paint the entire boat, gonna be a blocking fool for about a week! Priced carpet and paint today, Holy crap! Probably going to have to call the boat White Gold!
Totally forgot to take some pics today, too busy drinking Mike's Hard lemonade I guess.

Too bad you can't save that Carrera paint job. I just got my paint order(s) and I'm at about $1,500.00 and still counting. I won't get to paint until later this year and who knows what else I'll come up with for it. I need new carpet and seat upholstery.

I was going to color sand and polish the boat, but there are a few too many imperfections for me , besides the colors on this thing suck, I didn't know that many reds existed!, had to gelcoat the bottom any way, this guy thrashed the "S" out of this thing!
I'm considering using Duratec. :-\

Oh and BTW, these really aren't built as well as I thought they were, I'm a little dissapointed at the lack of quality from the origional boat, this is going to be quite a project, but I know it will be better than a new one...I just have to keep saying that over and over again..
Who had the number for that "shrink"?

Should have my little 350 small block back from Ore. on Wed. just came off the dyno, the engine was filled with water do to the plug being left in the boat it was in, sent it to a freind at a trade school in Eugene, thought it needed upgrading, so once it was torn down and cleaned up, it got bored .010" to clean up the cylinders (rusty), picked up a set of forged TRW flats, and a set of 1999 Votec heads, they gasket matched the heads and installed all new valves (stockers), redrilled the rocker stud holes to 9/16" and installed a set of ARP studs and Cranes guideplates, open plenum intake from a Volvo Penta I/O with a Holley 725 cfm square bore (Frankencarb) and the XM 278 Comp hydraulic cam, this little recycled POS made 335 hp a 4,780 RPM, I dont have the sheet yet but who cares?, This thing gonna rock!
The numbers are higher do to they ran a set of automotive Hooker super competition headers on it while testing and I'm running water manifolds (center riser) with IMCO thru's.
My buddy aced the class, and already got himself a job at a 4X4 shop (job retraining do to an accident).

Finally finished building my gate in my sideyard to keep my neighbor off my ass :mad:
Now I can begin working on what will next years boat ;), My little jet is all apart on the garage floor looking dejected, how do you get more time doing what you want?, seems like something always comes up... :banghead:

The paint looks cherry compared to mine!! :o
I did a flush mount tail light on a chopper project with white trash. I'll see if I still have the program.
Maybe whip out a dash plate for ya.

Well, I just figured out that White Trash II does not fit in the garage by about 1 foot :banghead Now I have to spend "boat money" on building a car port (boat port sounds funny), oh well. have made next to no progress on the hull, been spending some time going camping and to the races with the boy, missed this weekend at LSAR to get the "dust out of my dirt"... going to be a long winter...

I know, I was bummed, my buddy has a 2000 20.5 closed like that one with a 320 MPI small block, we got 76 MPH on GPS and I don't think it was done, nice boat, if I can get mine to the low 70's I will be totally stoked, it should look good, but I'm a little dismayed at how cheap I have seen boats on the market lately, I'm going to be in this one over what it's worth, but it'll be fun to build...
I will be doing some things to this one I have not done before, so should be an interesting ride...

Stern drive boats require a thick transom and they have to uniform to one another, all of the drive power gets transmitted throught the transom...
I picked up a 2 HP polisher today also, you done polishing parts yet?
hope to see that Eliminator back together soon...

Thats what I thought , I remember the Daytona Tom and Josh converted to a jet. That boat had (I believe) 3 layers of wood in the transom. I believe it went from a stern drive to an OB to a Jet. :screwy:

No. ;) I spent the day rideing, while the weather is still OK. Needed to remove some rubber from the edges of the tires before putting the old GSX R away for the winter >:D

I dont know how many of you remember how bad the oxidation was on my Hallett . Got a wild hair up my ass , whiped out the buffer , and through some polish on it . Thats it , no nothing , just a polish coat . The finish was very chaulky , tons of oxidation and it came right off .

Yeah beerjet, I was origionally going to colorsand and polish this badboy, but not only are the colors hideous, but its been run aground a few too many times and Carrera does some interesting stuff with fades that would require a comlete re-do, ultimately it would be easier to re-spray the entire boat and start over, which will allow me to fill a bunch of oddly placed holes and do a color change, this boat looks white but its actually light grey, can't have grey trash, can we?
Anyway the polishing that I was speaking of were bolt in pretty parts, most of which I think proppy made.....That looks good though, hard to believe it came back like that. Are those white stripes gel or paint?

It's gel. I was lookin at your pictures and there is a ton of colors and more than just a rub down needed . Those carrera's are sexy though. What outdrive you gonna stick on there ?

I was origionally going to use my Bravo III (Two props counter rotating), but decided to use up a 1997 Alpha I and an already done small block Chevy, should make a 70 MPH boat out of it without trying too hard, lets just say economical, saving the Bravo III for "The" boat.
"K" code 350 Small block, Vortec heads, Volvo open plenum marine Vortec intake, Comp Cams XM270H Cam with roller Rockers from Comp also, Forged slugs and balanced, should do the job for saying I'm in it almost nothing (lots of parts just lying around collecting dust).

Oh hell yeah, the OEMs build em all the time, the weakest links in the Bravo's (I,II and III's) are the upper bearing housings, those can be beefed up to handle 1200-1400 HP, but by then you have a 120+ MPH boat and lots of other failures are going to plague you.
I have a good freind with another 20.5 Elite and a Bravo I powered by a Pfaff built 496, I know without question it makes over 800 ponies and all we did was put synthetic oil in the drive, he's on his 6th season. BTW the boat does 93 on GPS. A little spooky to drive though, you have to be on your game, chine walks like Micheal Jackson... :screwy:

I've been lookin to put a bravo I on my Hallett . Dont know if the bottom is going to like going that fast but we'll see .
I'll be taking notes on the thread since I'm really unfarmiliar with outdrives and there relation to a boat . cant wait .

Is it true that most of the failures with stern drives are caused by shock loading the drive rather than actual power.
All "fracture failures" are from shock loads, most of the failures "real world" are either from excessive heat and or bad maintenance or shear horsepower causing case distortion which leads to bad gear mesh and bearing preload issues.
I have seen several different scenerios with the same outcome, blown up upper gearcases (rarely lowers), synthetic oil (I am an Amsoil dealer so that's what I recommend :sly:) makes a huge difference in the operating temperature making things live longer, not to mention lowering the friction factor and increasing the horsepower output to the shaft.
Shock load failures are most common in offshore applicatons where the drive is put under an enourmous amount of strain with 1500+ Hp engines and constantly leaving the water at over 100 MPH, if you enter the water under power, big things happen, (ever watched the throttle man in an offshore boat?).
Most lakes (with some exeptions) don't get a large enough chop to have this issue, but still happens.
I'm not sure that totally answered your question...Hope it did.

OK, as many of you already know, I am going to build aluminum seat frames for the Carrera, unfortunately I have to build them of melamine first, this will provide us with real fit patterns and enable us to create a "CAD" file to allow us to use the water table cutting machine for the permanent aluminum pieces. Apparently this is not done very often, being as I spent 2 hours calling around and only one place (North River) said this is something they do...
New territory I guess...
Should be interesting.

Finally getting back on track with some real work... The weather is drying up a bit, so now down to brass tax...
The seat frame programming is done and should have som cutting done this month.
The big ass Cobalt is gone, so now I have a place to work again, should have the "doner boat" here at the end of the week if the field it's in is dry enough to drive on...Wait til you guys see this ugly bastard :screwy:
I am going to get the boat dried out (again) and get the floors in it hopefully by the end of the month, meanwhile, I found a metallic sea Urchin in the oil pan of the jet boat :mad:, I sure would like to win once... :sly:
Anyways, looking at some of your guys projects, I've got some catch up to do...

If it makes you feel better we could use the laser table, but the water cuts nicer with "0" heat warping >:D
Melamine is like a really inexpensive 1/4" particle board that is shiney/waxy on one side...Works super bitchen for making templates for anything flat that you want to be able to pick up once built...

Paleeeze, we gave up laminate when we couldnt figg'r out how to speill it. Now purdy much all of us'n use blue tarps and duck tape for r countertops.... Brown tarps look alot like granite 2.....

To be honest with you Ray, almost nothing, but the guy that owned this boat was a wack job, he brought it to my shop in 1996 and the boat had literally been full of water to the gunwales and the 302 Ford powered Mercruiser completely submerged, I gave him a quote to go through the whole deal and get her running (I think it was in the neighborhood of like 5K) but did tell him I didn't think the boat was worth fixing...
Needless to say he took it to another shop and spent $10K to repower the boat with a brand new 260 HP 5.7L Mercruiser, he then used the boat for three months and parked it and bought another boat (bigger), this boat sat since 1997 and has 10 hours on the hourmeter, soooo I got the boat for the drivetrain, literally nothing else is useable and wasn't in 1996 either ;)
Who's nuts now? ;D :-\ It is one ugly sombitch though aint it?

OK....Im an idiot, but a lucky idiot....
Took the engine and drive off that ugly bastard (parts boat) they told me the motor was cracked and was junk, so as I'm pullin the motor out, I decided to try and roll it over, I pulled the dipstick and found the oil level was almost at the top of the stick, I figured it was because of water in the oil, so I took a piece of clear tube and put a vacuum pump on it until something came into view...looked like oil, not water (the dipstick tube goes all the way to the bottom of the pan for draining)..Baffled, I hooked up a battery and the engine just thumped, so I figured it was water locked, pulled the plugs, still nothing...
Anyway, I pulled the engine drained the oil and got almost three gallons of oil out of the pan...(it holds 6 quarts)...
Baffled further, tI took a breaker bar out of the box and tried to roll it over by hand, no way no how...
So I decided to pull the heads off, this thing is friggen perfect, no rust, cross hatch still in the cylindars no carbon build up, perfect...
So I grab the breaker bar again and it spins over without any effort at all WTF!!!
Turns out the alternator was seized up solid as shit... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
The 350 Chevy is almost ready to roll ;D\
I always say, "I'd rather be lucky than good"....So needless to say, I will have another running boat this summer....... :sly:
