Winter Project....Nordic is going blown Finally...pics and build

I have not posted in a while. Just been real busy with many other projects in my life. Anyway, it is cold here and snowing almost every day. So its time to get busy with the blower EFI project.
Here is a link to my page where it shows mostly the injector plate machining and such.
I ran into a couple of stone walls as such the fuel rails hit the BDS TP sensor housing and a couple other issues. I am at the mock up stage. Once all mocked up I will take it all down and replace the headgaskets oil pan gasket and front cover while checking the engine out altogether. The engine has about 3 to 4 hours on it.

I had to make stand-offs for the fuel rail to the injector plate. Took some measurements and milled away. The bolt that holds the stand offs to the plate is counter bored. Tomorrow I will finish drilling and tapping into the injector plate and also in the fuel rails where the stand-offs will mount. Pics.

Here is how I attached the rails to the stand-offs,the screws I used are just for mock up and I will be using stainless button heads. I also took the carb'd intake off the big block in about 2 minutes acting like a little kid to get the blower manifold on it and then the blower, EFI plate and Enderle hat. I have to be honest I was opening the throttle blades and making the blower engine noise like it was on the dyno. Acting like a little kid making noises on his bike he got for Christmas.

I have some issues, hence the mock up before final assembly. You have to expect some items not to fit right a needing "adjustments". The TP sensor on the BDS prepped Enderle bug catcher hits the inlet fitting on the fuel rail. I cannot really cut the fuel rail back anymore, so I think I will modify the TP sensor bracket and adjust the linkage to take up the difference I move it out. I still need to do a lot more work before final assembly. I think I might need new valve covers too because the ones I have interfere with the lower blower manifold as seen in the last 2 pics.

I had a problem where the BDS TPS set up hit the -10AN fuel rail fitting. I could not cut the rail back any more and did not want to machine another spacer plate for the injector plate. So I made a new TPS bearing housing. I copied BDS's housing. I just made it thinner and used the one bearing instead of the stacked 2 bearings. I am going to make another bearing housing the will hold another bearing that will be on the outside of the angle bracket.

Here is the original where the TP bearing housing hits will hit the fitting.

The original TPS bearing housing on the right and some alum stock on the left. Also I ordered some new bearings from Mcmaster in case I needed them.
You can see the splined shaft the connects to the linkeage and the other inside the TPS.

I transfer punched the holes (good old reverse engineering here...LOL) and bored out the round stock so the TPS lip fits nice.

Here is the shorter/thinner version on the left. The other side is bored out for the bearing.

Success. I have some good room now. Just have to machine another one for the other side.

I mocked up the pulleys including the alternator too. The alternator belt lined up perfect. I will be replacing the balancer with a ROMAC unit soon. I also need more fittngs for the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator. I am going to run stainless hard lines around to feed the fuel rails. Just a few more things to mock up and then it all comes apart. All the parts will be re-polished as well.

I have a huge list I need to keep on pushing and get this thing done. I made a thermostat housing today that will have a gauge and a dump. I also took apart the MSD dist and made it locked out timing (the accel thruster will control the timing). I also put a composite MSD gear back on (will see how it lasts).

Reminds me of reworking this set up from BDS, had to go thru TPS linkages, machine parts. Carefull, those red studs will go pink in a season. Looks good TJ.

Thanks Tom...um not for gettting a mad boner though. I have a question. I will need to change my impeller I was running an alum. "B" and I know it will not hold up. I am estimating around 800 hp. I was looking at the bronze "A" or "AA" impeller. I have looked at all the impeller charts out there and even the extended ones. I am on the fence here on what to put in my berk. I do like to spin up my motors too. I was spinning my B to a honest 6000 RPM's.

Got some more work done today. Finished up the outer Throttle position sensor bearing housing and bearing pressed in too. Now it has a bearing on the inside and outside. Before it had 2 in a thick housing that would hit the fuel rail fittings. Fit up is good. Counter sunk the screw holes. Still need a little longer stainless screws. Also mocked up and flared the stainless hardlines. I need to find 90 degree black elbows or get these re-anodized black. I need more fittings for the back side of the set up for the fuel rail to regulator and some other ones as well.
Got my MSD crank trigger. Nice piece but they do not drill it for the 6 bolt blower spacing (2.76"). So I made a jig and that allowed me to locate the regular 3 pulley holes (3.200 x 3 bolt spacing) so I can drill out the blower holes. I am going to use a Romac balancer that is double keywayed and drilled and tapped for 6 blower pulley holes (3/8-16). The MSD trigger wheel has a recess in the back of it (I do not know why, stupid) and I hope when I get the Romac balancer it will match. I might have to do more machining to make it all mate together. As I have stated before, I love aftermarket parts.

This is one of the most difficult parts to get. I went to every site that lists them and I call now on all sites except Summit before I order anything. None of the sites had the balancer I needed. Romac BBC external Balance double keywayed and drilled and tapped for 3/8-16 on 6 with a 2.76 bolt spacing for the blower pulley. Finally called Blower Drive Service ($$) and they have 9 in stock and will not be getting anymore. It came today but it requires a larger seal as the back of the hub is larger. So I called BDS back and asked them where is the seal. They said they cannot get them and are not supplied with them only for the small block. I was like WTF now. Again, I love aftermarket shit. So off hunting I go for a front cover seal that will fit a BBC cover but a larger hub for the balancer. Shit...

ps- anybody know what that steel machined cup is for. I have an idea but want to hear from others.

omg TJ, I envy your machining skills!!! That cup looks like it goes right where you got it (as a washer for the ballancer bolt). You can always call Don Hampton (Hampton Blowers, Downey Calif), he's the man when it comes to blowers.

I measured the OD of both stock and Romac balancer and it looks like the stock BBC front seal will work. Thanks again. Next up, machining a JIG to cut the extra key way in the crank.

Yup good old aftermarket parts again. Did I say...oh well nevermind. Anyway, the valve cover bosses are hitting my lower blower intake. It really is that the intake is hitting the valve covers. Anyway, I figure I could just notch the material on the intake for the bolt bosses on the valve covers. Well I did that and now the whole rail of the valve cover hits the intake. Set up on the mill again and indicate (I must have done this 5 times) and mill the whole extra meat down on the intake. Kind of nerve racking milling a brand new intake that goes for over 650.00 and change new. Here is a pic and a video.

10 steps back and 2 steps forward. Took the whole engie apart and took the crank out to machine a second 1/4" keyway. Had to make a jig so that I could machine it exactly 180 degrees from the factory 3/16" keyway. Made the jig out of round stock (bored the hole exactly to the crank diameter then cut it down and milled it as seen. I indicated the snout to make sure everything is all nice and square and locked the crank down and milled away. Set the depth of the key to be .005 from the top of the key to the balancer as per Ken Lowe's web site (the only spec I could find.). Came out dead nuts. Now I need to finish cleaning the block and heads and get this thing back together and finish this build.

So damn cool TJ. That's my balancer as well. I too panic'd about the seal dealio and measured till I was sick and worried it to death till I measured the stock balancer hub and found that the size was essentially the same. I then found out like you that they say the different seal if for SBC only.

Keep it up and I love how you designed the locator for the 1/4 key. Took me awhile to find a machinist that wanted to help me out (and then he charged me $250

)... Whatcha gonna do??
