I bought one off craigslist a while back for $100. Works great.
There's a few worth checking out.

Harbor Freight's $160 chinese version looks pretty good as well, except for being chinese that is.

I was going to suggest the Harbor Freight cherry picker, however they seem to only offer two versions of the same folder. I can't tell from the pictures exactly what the difference is, but I would opt for the 2-ton version. I am really not a fan of these folding types, I had one twist and collapse on one leg at the bent plate that forms the hinge. Even with the rigid version, pulling a fully dressed, iron headed, big block is a high anxiety experience.
Other than that, my HF picker has been reliable except for the check valve failing in the original ram. I was very lucky that it failed prior to rigging rather than during the pick.

I got tired of borrowing a friend's hoist so I went with the 2 ton HF model. Yea it's Chinese made but its solid, haven't had any issues other than the folding legs balance is off when folded up; fixed this with a bungee cord

I bought the HF 2 ton folding model and I have used it to pull and instal motors and even used it to flip one of my hull up side down with no issues.

I even got a 6' piece of square stock to make a longer extension to be able to drop a motor in a flat bottom, it would not reach with the extension that came with it.

I use a 3,500 lb Blackhawk that I have had for 20 years. Made in Springfield Illinois.
Will lift 2,000lb. 8 feet out. Lol
Hard core bad ass.
I once lifted a fully dressed, closed cooled 454 Mercruiser engine into a 30 foot Sea Ray from the ground.
I would buy a China Co. Picker if it was free.

Gt jets is right about the cheap cherry pickers only if free ! Lol they twist and are built with thin wall tube . Only two casters on my cheapey touch the ground the two in the air ...

I've had a 2 of the Chinese type harbor freight cherry pickers in short life and my shade tree of a mechanic father taught me the trick to make them last. When you store them always leave the boom all the way down and collapsed. I don't know why but it keeps the seals from blowing out. Btw... the only reason I've bought 2 is he stole the first one and is still using it. My 2💰...

Good info. The seals didn't blow, the check valve is open both ways. The pump only raises the ram one pump. Then pressure in the ram puts force back on the pump piston and raises the handle. Not sure exactly what happened, haven't had a chance to take it apart. I just replaced the ram. I have literally pulled hundreds of engines with it though. I feel I got my money's worth. Wish I had the budget for a nice shop crane like GT's.
