not much howto on boat interior...
« on: January 23, 2011, 05:03:57 PM »
i find all kinds of help on engines, rigging, electrical, cooling, etc but theres a giant hole where boat interior knowledge should be.  ive scoured the internet for how to build seat frames... im pretty hands on when it comes to anything, i redid the fiberglass floor.  i gave a few shops a call on getting interior put in and i was shocked to find out that interior almost comes out to as much as ive invested in the boat itself.  so i found a pair of seats from 76 bonneville a while ago and recently took em apart to use em as templates to make new frames and glass em so they're nice and bulletproof.  hopefully i can get those to an upholstery shop soon and finish my project.

anyone else do their own or did you just end up bending over at a shop?

I built my interior a few years ago and my girlfriend did the sewing for me....If you can see it finished...you can make it. I had two front/back seats with a dog house before. I now have two fronts with two 3-way bench and a hatch. Spent around 7-800 bucks for all material.
The first pic is how it was...this is a image show. I also removed the tower/mounts this winter.

Would be interested in some input. I have a friends jet boat with an interior he wants to redo except most to the plywood is rotted out so I could use some help to fabricate new seats, then take everything to an upholstery shop.

The easiest way is to copy whats there. If you want something custom, look at as many boat interior pics as possible. Find a style you like and start. If you plan on seperate pieces that touch, make sure you allow for foam/vinyl. Its a good idea to keep seat cushions tight. As far as the wood goes...3/8-1/2 depending on how strong you want em...I went for 1/2 ply. Used wood glue and a brad nailer for assembly. I then used fiberglass/resin on inside corners and areas needing reinforcement. I then sealed all wood with a good outdoor sealer. Talk with your upholstery shop as per tolerances. Building a interior is very simple, just take your time as it will show.
