« on: August 31, 2014, 10:43:16 AM »
Anyone have one? Thinking about gettin rid of the truck its gettin tired and kinda been considering gettin a jeep. Dont really need a truck anymore sold all my other toys for my boat lol. Just worried about how well it would tow the float. Got a 19ft hallett bubble. Anyone tow with theres?

the base towing capacity for them is quite low, and is also dependant on your rear axle gear ratio...

I towed once or twice with a Bronco II.   Scariest thing ever trying to come to a stop.
Encountered a red light in the rain, hit the brakes going slowly already, and the boat pushed me right through red light and the intersection.

Jeep wrangler newer than 2012 will tow, but you might need to change gears and get a tranny oil cooler. I have been looking and talking to lots of jeepers about this same thing. 3000 #s is the max the engine can tow. If you had brakes on the trailer you will be golden.

The JK is rated up to 3500lbs.  The older JKs are rated less.  I think you will be at the limit with your boat.

http://www.jeep.com/en/2014/wrangler-unlimited/capability/

The FJ Cruiser is rated at 5000lbs.

http://www.toyota.com/fjcruiser/ebrochure

As nice and as capable as an FJ is, I really don’t see the IFS up to the task of serious wheeling compared to a straight axle Jeep with simple bolt-ons.  It really depends on the type of wheeling you want to do.

+1 vote for keeping the truck.

Cheers,

Joe

Just curious, manual or auto?  How do you like the 5.13s?  What is your impression of the braking?  Do the JKs have the same basic brakes as the XJ (drum rear) and ZJ?

FWIW, I got to make a mandatory $1000 contribution to local law enforcement for doing exactly that, not to mention the annual contribution I have been making to my insurance company for the last eight years.

loved the 5.13's, it was an auto.  I bought it as a trade in here at the dealership, the original owner picked it up from jeep and took it straight to get the lift and wheels tires, drove out of that shop and did not like it, turned around and had the gears done, still did not like it so did intake, exhaust and chip, bumpers.  It towed the boat ok, took a bit to get up to speed and had to drive very carefully, the boat has excellent brakes so that helped but you could feel it "moving" at 65+  loved the jeep but needed a better tow vehicle for the boat and my rock crawler,  so ended up with a mega cab diesel 4x4 lifted.

Ive kin of considered the fj. There not the best looking rig out there. Ive got a buddy thats got a 12' jk with 33s i think im just gunna hook the boat up and drive around town and see how it does.  I figure my boats right around 3k (1k motor 1k hull and rigging and 1k trailer).
My buddy was also telling me the 2012 and newer jks with the new motor also come with a tranny cooler?
