I am in the middle of having to make a decision. The 454 that I have right now is in need of a very big very expensive rebuild and that's not taking into concentration if I have a cracked head or block. I have been searching on line for a new engine. I have found two, a Chevy 468 and a ford 460. I'm kinda bias towards fords but the Chevy is another good option. The ford has more upgrades but the Chevy is a newer rebuild. The ford I would have to get different mounts and bellhousing but that would be just about all I would have to change. Both engines are complete. I just wanted to know everyone's opinion on what you all think? Thanks everyone

On the home page you will find a link for all the many reasons why the FORD is superior to the GM from an engineering standpoint.  I think if you compare the prices on parts you will often find the Ford is cheaper to fix than the BBC too.  Bowtie guys lose sleep over this stuff but it is hard to argue with Paul's facts.

Anybody  notice GM announced yet another recall today?  Un freaking believable.

you're wanting to buy a used motor thats realistically in unknown condition... a mystery.  it could break tomorrow.  tear down the motor you have, you can do it yourself and figure out where you're at.  getting a block magged to check for cracks isnt very costly and then and ONLY then can you make an education decision rather than just throwing money into another problem...

Wouldn't matter if it wasn't. I would still tear it completely down and build it and check balance and whatnot.

Are you serious?  Did you just pull the Ford is better than Chevy card? 

The best and safest way to repower his boat would to remove his old 454 disassemble and have a reputable shop rebuild it. This way he can set actual power and usage goals.

I once had this mentality!  The unknown can be scary for some but once you do your own research there are many plus's and minus's on both ends.  Fords have tons of potential even in stock form.

One thing to keep in mind with a Chevy to Ford swap is mounts, just because your Chevy worked doesn't always mean the same angle and mounting location of a Ford fall into place.  Not trying to discourage you from doing so but it should be looked at if you go that route just to be sure.  I would consider diving into what you have and to see what it's actually going to cost.  Just know that there are always Chevy's and Chevy parts for sale around every corner to put it back together. Just my .02
